Title: Pickup Choice
Post by: RorySRV on September 28, 2006, 08:53:25 PM
Hey everyone,

I have just joined up onto this forum because I hear you guys a great bunch of people and of course have an extensive knowledge of BKPs.

Anyway I come here seeking an answer which I hope you will be able to help me with.

Basically I am thinking of swapping in some new pickups to replace the stock ones in my 70's Classic Series Strat which has 3 single coils.

And I thought I would look into BKPs.

I am looking to get some pickups mainly to emulate the sound of Rory Gallgaher, SRV and some classic and hard rock bands such Hendrix, Cream, Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Sabbath etc

On another forum i was recommended these combinations:

Neck - Mothers Milk
Middle - Irish Tour,
Bridge - Slow Hand,

Neck - Irish Tour,
Middle - Mothers Milk,
Bridge - Irish Tour,

Neck - Irish Tour,
Middle - Irish Tour,
Bridge - Irish Tour,

The only reason the guy who recommended these combinations gave was for the first one.

He recommended the Mothers Milk in the neck to replace the strats neck pup with one that was orientated to hendrix and people of similar sounds such as Rory Gallagher.

He recommended the Irish Tour in the middle to bring me in SRV terrority although not that I couldnt get it from the neck anyway,

He recommended the Slow Hand in the bridge because it has a slightly darker sound and with more of a mid range punch to emulate those artists using a les paul.

So I was wondering what you guys thought of the recommendations I was given and if you could recommend any more combinations that you personally think are more suited to handle the styles of play that I look to play.

Your help would be much appreciated  ,

Thanks in advance :) ,

Rory,

personally i wouldnt mix and match the sets.. i know it's been done with varing degrees of sucess, i know i've found some great combinations.. but generally an entire set will balance out better and just seems to just sound more sensible to me when your playing.

I'd go All Irish Tours..

I really like the IT's...

Thanks.

So you reckon a set of Irish Tours would be able to emulate all these artists pretty well...

I am open to loads of other suggestions

So post yours people  :)

I have no experience of the IT's but they would appear to be the way to go-I would certainly say stick with one type. I have a set of Apaches in a 1970's Strat and they are very versatile and have no problem producing the classic Strat tones but they are vintage 1950's classic Strat sounding Pups-maybe you want something a hotter.Welcome to the forum btw.

Ok I will take this into account.

It seems Irish Tours are the way to go.

I have been listening to the sound samples of them and to be honest they sound amazing.

Thanks for all your suggestions,

And I hope to get the pickups sorted and stay here a long time

He's right too... the sets all seem very well matched.  Then again I am thinking of going with a Nailbomb and Trilogy Suites still mainly due to stubborness because I've heard some clips of the combo that make a nice metal/shred guitar.

Aaah ok. Sorry about that I thought you could have been someone from another forum who originally recommended BKPs and a set of Irish Tours specifically.

You must be bi-lingual by now deg.

It would be interesting to hear your accent  :) , although it doesnt really vary much around these parts.

But as soon as you get into Devon and Cornwall you swear they are speaking a foreign language.

No offence to Tim or any of the other BKP Admins
