Title: Yngwie Malmsteen
Post by: JamesHealey on October 02, 2006, 09:52:07 AM
What does everyone think of this guitarist? Regardless of the fact he's over weight and has one serious ego problem..

I've always pretty much been anti yngwie.. but after a good listen of recent to some of his back catalogue.. eg the odyssey album im quite impressed.

his leads on songs like "hold on" and rhythm work on "Rising Force" is quite impressive..

and he's actually got a pretty beastly tone! i think a set of Trilogy Suites might be in order for my next strat maybe with a 22k Overwound Sinner.. hahaha!

Personally,

while I can appreciate the technical ability the music does nothing for me whatsoever for me it's sterile.

Although the guy does appear to have a sense of humour the DVD footage of him busking in Denmark St last year says more about him as a person than his music does (in my little world).

yng pwns.

I don't really like the arrogance, but other than that... yeah, he rules. he can play, that's for sure. and his tone and vibrato are awesome.

Amazing, one of my favourites. I especially like his Alcatrazz material, and his first 4-5 solo albums.

I like Yngwie.  I like his playing and I like us stubborn attitude towards pursuing his art regardless of what critics say.

I also don't get the whole "arrogance" thing people go on about.  A friend of mine spent some time with him years ago and he was just a down to earth nice kinda guy (full story here (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4046&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=12)).

Muttley

cool- it's entirely possible he gets a bad press.

he is pretty funny, to be honest. that whole "feel the f**kin' fury" thing on the plane was awesome.

He is definitely one of my favourite players, like TO says.

It did not take very long before I just found him way too boring.

Aside from the fact that he always sounds the same and absolutely refuses to use a scale other than harmonic minor even playing blues when it sounds absolutely horrible... perhaps it would have taken me another week to find him so incredibly boring had I not heard his good stuff (Trilogy, Odyssey, Rising Force, etc.) before hearing his newer stuff.

There are a lot of Malmsteen wannabees out there however, and none of them quite do it as well as he does, except Michael Angelo Batio who just does it much faster.

He is also a major asshole and his stage tactics are pretty lame too, and insists on being introduced as "the greatest guitarist to ever walk the planet" for all his gigs, but I do respect him for sticking to his guns about doing the one thing that he wants to do (show off).

And Tonight Ladies and gentle man Yngwie Malmsteen the guitarist that plays really fast doesnt have as good phrasing as half the other popular virtuoso's kinda is a bit sloppy and has an attitude problem! *silence*.. followed by booing..

yea I damn well hope they introduce him as the greatest guitarist ever.. coz it gets the crowd going.

I think he's at his best when he works with people he respects (i.e. anyone who's ever been in Rainbow).  Then he seems to put his ego on hold and let them have some input to the writing.  The Alcatrazz stuff is great, and so is the Odyssey album with Joe Lynn Turner, because they have really good songs.

With a lot of his other stuff, the guitar playing is amazing but after about 10 minutes I feel like I'm sitting in a tin shack in a rainstorm - it just keeps bashing away at 100 mph and gives me a headache.

As for the "unleash the fockin' fury" thing, don't forget he was puffed-up enough to say it in the first place.  He only has a sense of humour about it now because he'd look a right dick if he was still stroppy.

People always expect more than you can give, and when one rises to, or even above the occasion they are hailed as great.  It is not easy to be in the lime-light all the time, and have to be spot on at all outings. However, for musicians, like pro athletes, the masses demand nothing less than brilliance. Most of the times brilliance is delivered, but a couple of off nights and a critic with a hard-one can drag down a career quicker than shitee.

I for one like Yngwie Malmsteen, eventhough some of his music is a bit run-on; too many notes. He has proved he can play.

I like enough to have named my thrash outfit Seventh Sign - brilliant song, and his solo stuff is fab in moderation. And he's arrogant  8) supposedly...but all all the better for it!

Maybe.

I think you all get that guy a bit to seriously. He's like a clown, he does his arrogant thing to annoy people and I find that pretty funny
I don't like what he does but he does it well, and he's a stage beast. I got a G3 DVD with him and he rips appart satch and vai in term of show (show off some might say hehe)
So relax guys, best guitar playing clown ever

I don't particularly like what the guy does but you've gotta respect the fact that he has changed the face of guitar playing and that he plays exceptionally well. Also, I have a malmsteen sig strat and it's my favourite guitar ever, scalloped fingerboards rule!!!  :D

I bought a CD last year.  Put it on for 10 minutes and never played it again.  Good player but just couldn't listen to it anymore.

Saying that though, he's from Sweden so he must be cool.  Anyone from Sweden is well alright in my books

Lucky he's good, he has to compensate for his weight and personality  No, that's a bit harsh. He's awesome, but in terms of shredders, there are lots who are just a whole lot more diverse and interesting (Petrucci, Gilbert, Buckethead)

Sour grapes! Let's hear you then! Do you do world tours? No? Didn't think so!

This arrogance thing, like some of you have pointed out, is just mind games with the pillock journo's who also have sour grapes cos's all they can do is make a career out of being a bitter geek. The man is a laugh and has a sense of humour. I have Odyssey and yeah it can bet a bit much after a while but the first time i heard him my jaw hit the floor and that instrumental track, I think it's called Bite The Bullet has an incredible riff and the solo is mental, listen to that bend when he changes key, it's the business! :P

Well the busking footage (at the end of Denmark St) was pretty funny, so he definately cant be as humourless and and arrogant  as people claim (esp those who havn't met him). I'm sure it has made it's way onto youtube by now.

Malmsteen can lick my nuts. Just because someone can play fast doesn't mean they're good. I would honestly rather listen to all the clips in the Players section here than listen to Malmsteen. And to be honest, i think most of you have more real talent than him. And if i ever see him do one of those kicks in person, i'm gonna do one too. And nail him right in the nuts.

I saw him at the Dominion years ago and got his pick.  Tried it and still can't play like him.  So he probably has a form of super talent, rather than a lucky choice of pick.  I think he manages to get feeling into what he plays IMHO.  And as for arrogant.  I would be if I could play that good.  I do agree the later albums are a little lame, but the cover of Gimme Gimme Gimme is the best.

Is it just me, or does the 3rd member of G3 always SLAUGHTER satch and vai?

Regarding the third member of G3 always slaughtering Satch and Vai, they were pretty f**kin safe when I saw them in Birmingham a few years back with Robert Fripp. Man oh man, that guy blows.

He didn't do a single damn thing all night that sounded like a guitar. Didn't even come onto the front of the stage, so that sat in my cheap seat, I couldn't see him.

Probably just as well, seeing him would have further encouraged the urge I had to throw the nearest heavy hard object at him, while screaming 'Just play a f**king powerchord for f**ks sake!!' If i wanted to listen to a synth player, I'd go see Fatboy Slim or some other 'DJ'.

As for Yngwie, technically awesome, but not really my thing. I like a good shredder as much as the next guy, but he's just a little too much. Not enough melody.

Dunno, the only G3 tour I saw was Satch, Michael Schenker and Uli Jon Roth.

I love Schenker, but he was going through that weird black hair and sunglasses phase (why would a blond guy go to the trouble of dyeing his eyebrows and beard black??  :? ).  He was rubbish, I have to say.  Uli was definitely the star of the show.

For Mr Fripp this link sort of explains why I feel as I do about him http://frakctured.ukf.net/PlayersPlectra.htm and one of the polite words I would use to describe him is "pretentious". Read his interviews, especially when he mentions Beck & Cream.

However I am almost prepared to forgive him for the sounds he gave us during the Heros era Bowie

As for YJM and others my first criteria is not speed or how hard it is to play, but how good it sounds. Usually I'd prefer to listen to John Lee Hooker than Vai, as Hooker makes me wanna dance. But sometimes a bit of Vai also hits the spot.

Muso, perhaps i should have made myself clearer.

What I meant was that Malmsteen's solos dont have enough melodic phrasing in them for my tastes. I'm not denying he's a fantastically talented guitar player, just not quite my cup of tea.  :)

I have to honestly say that I think Yngwie is great!

His first 3 cd's kick arse.
You have to give hin his due.
Hendrix, Vanh Halen and Malmsteen. They have done alot foe guitar playing.
He might be Swedish Pie Eating champion now (and have an ego to match)  but who cares?
