OK this is all gossip at best. But there are some pics of a new EVH amp on this thread (http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=175611). Acording to the gossip he's going to be using all Fender guitars and amps and have a Seymour Duncan model pickup. The guitars will be like the Charvel Art Series and there will be a new Wolfgang. So from what I can figure the porn business ain't paying that great and he needs the income.
-
So, Seymour Duncan finally let them make a EVH model pickup... I wonder if the EVH which they call "Evenly Voiced Harmonics," will become the Eddie Van Halen pickup now.... story has it that that was built for him but he wouldn't let them market it in his name so they changed what EVH stands for but if you call Seymour Duncan and ask for the Van Halen pickup, that's what you get.
Personally I think it was the Van Halen pickup... it's the vintage cut magnet that's slightly overwound, and what he said he was doing was taking pickups from Les Pauls and sometimes Seymour Duncans and re-winding them with more windings back in the day.
Wait a minute.... does Eddie Van Halen still play? lol
-
He does still play but he looks kinda like a homeless woman.
I've heard the story about the EVH humbucker that Duncan sells. The naming reminds me of the fact that they insist that the JB stands for Jazzy Bluesy.
You know he could have just bought a Splawn Quick Rod and some VHII pickups and been all set really.

Eddie has discovered that while his music isnt earning his so much money these days - having signature gear does- so Musicman, Peavey, MXR(DUNLOP) , Seymour Duncan, Charvel and now Fender are doing his lines.
He has become quite rigourous defending his intellectual property in recent years.
But this is nothing new - is there a product that Zakk Wylde doesnt do (apart from Razor blades) - same with Dimebag etc etc
Probably making more from liscensing the name than selling CDs
EVH aftershave - because everyone needs their own eruption[/i]

so many knob.... gahk

Now you can't be serious about the smelly stuff? With EVH I wouldn't be suprised cos it will sell!

More like spot cream to control eruptions.
So who is making the EVH amps these days (I couldn't be arsed looking it up).

I bet a fiver it sounds like ass yet all the EVH fans still go out and buy it in record numbers...

I bet a fiver it sounds like ass ...
^thats probably why he was using a marshall despite having two of these new amps on stage in a pic in another thread on here.
-
:D I bet its just another version of a suped up Marshall.
He should have just got a Charvell & stuck a VHII in it, plugged it into his modded Plexi & off he went. Saved himself all the arsing about.
:D 8)

Anyone else think the new Eddie tone with the basswood bodies, high output pickups and 6L6 powered amps sounds far worse than his older tone with ash bodies, PAF and 6CA7 powered amp?
-
OK from a photographers point of view....
Doesn't it strike you as too obvious that he is using a Marshall?
I mean it's only a head you can see that gives it away and that could easily be out of sight.
Is he on a wind up?
Oh who cares!!   8)

so many knob.... gahk
lol.... once you get over one row of knobs, I can't figure out how to work the thing...
And the worst part is, I have a degree in computer science... this stuff should be easy for me.

I've heard that the JB was made for Jeff Beck and then it has no relation and back and forth... I still have no idea which it is so I kind of leave it alone.

True, but with dimebag it's more companies putting his name on all sorts of pickups and guitars he never even owned one of and may have not even seen half of them, not to mention played them...

Like the 5150? Take a Marshall, add a lot of gain, remove all the balls and anything that resembles balls in any way from the tone, and you have a 5150....

Agreed. His best tone and music was the first album and he's consistently got worse with each release in both departments.

Errr, no it didn't mate.

I'm sure Ed went for the tone he wanted at the time.
I prefer the early tone, but thats just my preference.

The new amp which will be made by Fender isnt actually so difficult to use
3 channels - probably clean, drive and lead
Each channel has gain, bass, mid, treble & master volume
Then there are 3 presence controls - one per channel
It is a bit like the Soldano 3 channel preamp in some ways
I think it would be fun if th chanels were clean, plexi and high gain
I think I would rather have a Splawn to be fair
-
while I love the tone on VHI, Eddie's tone on the 5150 album is also awesome, same with 1984. Come to think of it, his tone on VHII also rocks - especially on the opening track (You're No Good).
-
I would like to see what the amp is going to sound like. Hopefully it will be something like clean, plexi and high gain like someone said earlier in the thread but at the same time, he really should just start endorsing splawn and get some VHII's in his guitar.
-
Yeah but Splawn and BKP aren't going to pay him as much as Fender and SD
-
sure fire hed sound better though, but I think that might have gone out the window sometime after 2000...oh well RIP king of Rock and Roll
-
why would people buy a piece of gear if they've not heard it on a cd.. so it kinda says to me that eddies going to have recorded with this amp or claimed to have on the porn cds, or release some new VH stuff.
-
Krank released the Krankenstein and Dimebag never recorded with it (never played it live either AFAIK). They may just expect people to try it in the shop and like it.
Besides, I think a lot of the popularity of the 5150 amps was due to metal players using them, rather than EVH.
-
I wouldn't base my opinion on the recorded sound anyway. Going through a Neumann U87/Royer 121 or the shure 57, some nice tube preamps, Neve console, EQ's, De-essers, and other studio processing candy could give you something that's pretty different from the raw amp sound.

When Ted Templeman stopped producig Van Halen and Donn Landee wasn't around engineering as much Eddie's tone got different. Not bad but different. Producers and engineers can make a world of difference on a record.
-
I personally think VH should just pull out his old Plexi and Frankenstrat, do a few gigs with DLR, MA and AVH and get it over and done with and stop making the world wait for it :P
-
In the state Ed seems to be in I don't think I'd even care to see it now. :P
Oh yeah and gingataff Dime did use the Krankensteins on that last tour he was on.
-
ah ok, I thought he was using revolutions.
-
Ah, he might have been. I just meant he was using the Krank amps in general. :P

I'm quite certain I've seen a picture of Dime playing through a Krankenstein onstage before. I know for certain he played the regular Krank amp extensively.
I do believe that Dime never played his new Dean signature guitar though, although he did design the body.
-
That is true. On the last tour he was using the 79 MLs.
-
Dime did use a Krank of some description when he was on that tour with damageplan.
As for this EVH thing, the way I see it is this. You have the children of rich wannabees, you have rich wannabees and the totally brand brainwashed mugs, which are probably the same but anyway .....These people love a logo and a name it's associated with....Branding is how the marketing men get their money. The guitar industry is no different and from a business point of view it works. Don't let it smart dudes cos' the more money changing hands in our chosen passion, I.E. the electric guitar, the better for us cos we get to use products that WE know are good and that's all that matters to us, Right? 8) It just separates those in the know and those who are a bunch of dickheads!

i agree with that Jonny, but at the same time the endorsee is having a big pay check waved in there face..
if someone came up to me and said we'll pay you x ammount to play Ibanez, EMG and Peavey XXX.. i'd do it.
but i'll tell u now i'd prefer my strat, Bkp and splawn.. :P
coz at the end of the day these people want to get that "tone" there favourite artist has and it's generally achievable with other gear and the ability to be able to play like them..

It doesn't bother me one bit if they get a huge endorsee cheque either, good luck to them. The people who buy the stuff love a brand and that's what they get so it's all cool with me! I got free stuff for saying a few quotes in a bike mag when i dispatched in London and i knew the stuff was cr@p! $% it who gives a toss? Freebies are nice and free money is heavenly! People have been mugged of with 'Snake Oil' for since the dawns of time, you just have to know your subject and spot a salesman's bollocks!
