Sh1t... Next Paul Stanley is gonna leave KISS because he happens to have a solo album coming out.

This is either "buzz" creation or a total F-up.

You can't split up with your brothers band for long.

The cr@p thing is that "a reunion" tour will follow like night follows day!

Idiots...

TBH Justin sort of looks like the only member to be actually doing the rockstar foolishness thing, it looks like a case of blame everybody around me becasue I'm blameless. But then thats what nose candy does for ya :(

Except for their their ex bass player that looked like he was auditioning for Spinal Tap (and perhaps as Evil Uncle Ernie)

I actually quite like some of their music - It's very catchy and at least they play their own instruments, unlike most other people in the charts these days...

I agree though, Justin IS the Darkness - at least their current incarnation...They may go for something completely different this time round, rather than that 80s vibe they had going on before

It's a shame.  Love 'em or loathe 'em, they were the first British rock band for years to be right on the verge of true international megastardom.  They got on the telly, in the daily papers and for a month or two even old ladies, small children and dogs had heard of them.

The first album had some great songs, but I think it started to go wrong when they took so long over the follow-up - they should have just rush-released any old shitee and stayed in the public eye, but instead they took 2 years.  Everyone had forgotten them - and the album was still shitee.

They always got accused of being a joke band.  I don't think they were, they believed in the music but they (or at least Justin) were smart guys with a keen sense of their own ridiculousness.  If it was a joke, it was one the audience was in on.  What a pity they've succumbed to the usual boring old rock star clichés - musical differences, "difficult" second album, eating disorders, substance abuse.

The rest of them might as well split now.  Richie Edwards could be the greatest singer in the world, but no-one's going to care.  They've had their 15 minutes and they blew it.   :(

I find it funny how Justin does all his high singing notes in the studio then sucks live because he can't do it.

That sucks, although their second album was pretty shoddy so I guess they might not have had much of a future. It'll be interesting to see what the brothers do when they're not together, presumably they'll both keep making music.

Also, who cares if he can't do live what he can do in the studio? What are you trying to do in the studio? Make the best album you can, surely? So what if that involves something you can't replicate live? Loads of bands use orchestras, guest soloists, multiple tracks from the same instrument, sound effects... You can't do any of that live, but so what?

:D What the Darkness really did was put Metal back on  the map.

Metal has been going down hill for years, its become toneless, tuneless rubbish, were every band looks exactly the same & sounds the same.  Most of the bands especially those from the states, are really no fun anymore. Its no accident that Metal sales are & have been in decline for the last decade or so. What The Darkness did was put the FUN back into Metal. And as a consequence they sold loads of albums. They don`t look like everybody else & they went out of there way to write descent riffs & tunes. How many guitar players do you hear playing "I believe In A Thing Called Love" a bet they drove Tim & the guys mad with it at the guitar shows !!

^I agree with this, but wouldnt call em metal! More like fun rock or something :P Their latest album was really cr@p but Permission To Land had some good songs/riffs.

To be honest, I thought One Way Ticket was musically a much better album than Permission. Permission had some great songs, but it was much easier to listen to Ticket all the way through. Dinner Lady Arms is a great song, and Bald is just awesome. If only they hadn't put Girlfriend on it............

It's all a bit cr@p really.  And I agree they blew it taking too long on the second album.  But then, that's always a stumbling block for bands.  I mean, for your first album you have years to come up with the material, and to fine-tune it in the live environment.  Then suddenly you're stuck in the "Must write a new album, rehears and record it in 6 months, and it must be as good as the first one (at the very least)".  It's bloody hard.

His voice did get on my nerves after a few songs... but then so does Axl Rose and I love Guns N' Roses (shame they don't exist anymore ;)).

Still, there is a resurgence of fun rock/metal happening now which I think is a knee jerk reaction to all these miserable emo types.

Check out The Towers of London: http://www.thetowersoflondon.com/ for starters.

I heard Towers of London a while back when they first came onto the music channels etc.. thought they sounded fake, like they're trying too hard to be "punk" or whatever..

For new rock, I quite like a band called The Answer (www.theanswer.ie), have some pretty good songs, launch the pop-up player thing for some decent recordings.. The singer reminds me of a mix between Plant and Coverdale somehow

i've seen them live a few times, and he definately can hit all the notes!  personally i hope this is a temporary thing and they do come back, their records are great fun with some really good songs and they are an absolutely brilliant live band.  also, having had a drink with them once, they seem like nice guys, not something that can be said about all rock stars.

Speaking of "fun rock", IMO the meisters of this non-genre are Finland's Five Fifteen (http://www.novision.fi/fivefifteen/). I've always thought they sounded like there'd been terrible car crash between Deep Purple, Zeppelin, and ABBA, after which the survivors had formed a new band .... :)

The Answer are great, heard a few of there songs. Hope they can make it big too

If they got a normal singer they would be a great rock band, but with Justin they sound more like a novelty act to me.
Great rock bands are bands like UFO and The Scorpions. For newer rock, bands like Wolfmother or Priestess. They strike me as what modern rock should be like and i have a feeling without Justin that The Darkness could probably fulfill that.
Clearly the success has gone to their heads (or Justin's at least) and has lead to bad things, they have only done 2 albums and have already mucked up.
I don't hate them, i want them to do well, but with Justin they have been more like a one hit wonder.

I do agree with you actually CJ, but I did like Justin for a laugh :P

As for your 'newer rock' bands, I'd never heard any Wolfmother until the other day when I watched the highlights of Download on channel 4, and had heard only good things about them. I can't say I was very impressed tbh, although to be fair they only had one of their songs on the show, so I can't claim to be an expert - they just seemed to be lacking something for me

plus they wore cool 80's clothes and had good solos.

the answer seem alright, but i'm not too impressed with the guitar player. His solos don't seem all that great. The songs, that i've heard, though seem not bad, certainly.

Not too fond of wolfmother, haven't heard too much, but what i have heard i haven't liked. Just seems like run of the mill modern rock that i don't really get on with.

I quite like Wolfmother but can't stand their guitar solos. If they had decent solos I would like them so much better as I really like their songs. I don't think they're all that good live though.

I also thought the Darkness were brilliant when they released their first album, but their latest one is cr@p.

'Hardcore' is the new 'rock'...

good old hard-hitting heavy sh*t... without being cheesey or repetitive metal (which is SOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring, and which everyone on here loves!).

exhibit 1: GALLOWS! - probably the best british band at the moment, full stop. absolutely AMAZING live as well.

www.myspace.com/gallows

exhibit 2: GHOST OF A THOUSAND!!!! - following in the same style as gallows... simply fantastic.

www.myspace.com/theghostofathousand

i've fallen in love with this genre recently... its new (not regurgitated punk), but still heavy, still aggressive, but catchy at the same time. Good guitar riffs, no cheesey power-metal or gay shredding.

simply put, its heavy music, done by people that know how to write songs... HOORAH!

PS. dont dismiss this as some "screamo emo cr@p" or whatever... give it an honest listen... i think this is the future of heavy british music. its AWESOME!

Listening to Gallows now sam, not bad, but I dont really like the vocals. Quite nice guitar tones and riffs, at least. Still prefer Priestess though -   http://www.myspace.com/priestessband  Lay Down is so good!

i shall give it a listen.

i hated gallows at first... despised them lol... but it grows on you.. (well it did on me)... and seeing them live was the last bit of evidence i needed.

anyway, here we go... priestess...

very cool.

also very different in general to the gallows style... good for different reasons. this is slightly more 'classic' kinda vibe... whereas the stuff i link-ed was punky.

coool!

I also agree with Tom, riffs and tones are alright but vocals are just mindless screaming which i don't find catchy.

haha fair enough.

i would have to disagree though. its screaming, sure. but its not like death-metal, 'mindless' screaming like your dying.

its more 'shouty'. songs like Abandon Ship have more proper 'singing'.

anyway, as i said before, i hated it all at first, but its grown on me to the point where i absolutely love it now. so who knows... you might start liking it more.

well gay shredding is fine if you want to listen to a piece of guitar wizardry...

but in songs, i personally think, that shredding (gay or otherwise) is just unnecessary... and pretty much ruins any song in any context...
