Title: Speaker grille cloth and speaker resistance questions..
Post by: _tom_ on October 14, 2006, 01:17:54 PM
I've searched ebay etc but cant seem to find any silver grille cloth, like on the Fender HRDx series (cant think of any other colour that will match a Laney head!).

The only place I can see grille cloth for sale is Matamp.. Surely theres somewhere else? I havent rang em yet but as they dont have prices on their site I'm guessing they are expensive.

Now, speakers. I just got my cab today (great condition btw) and the Eminence speakers dont have the model number or an ohmage rating on em! Theres 2 inputs, it looks like 1 for each speaker.

How could I see which ohmage rating each speaker is? Multimeter maybe? The guy selling it said he thinks its 16 ohms but I just want to be sure as theres no rating anywhere.

Oh and I'll get pics up later, tho the red and black baffle looks a bit tacky :P

Cheers for any help

edit - forgot this! Best speaker cable for not too much money?

here's another option, how about taking drivers out, repainting the cabinet and putting the drivers back in again, seeing as your main issue is that you don't like the red 8)

Well it can be easily covered with a grille cloth, plus I'd rather have a silver cloth than all black cab coz blacks just boring  :P

Fender sell grille cloth through their spares dept...

http://www.fender.com/products/show.php?partno=0037788000

As for Matamp, give 'em a call - they really aren't expensive at all.  Last time I got some basketweave off them for a 4x12 it was around £15.

Marshall also sell grille cloth for all their current models.

Ah I asked fender, they said I'd have to go to an authorised dealer, probably more expensive than Matamp. I'll give em a ring sometime.

Got a response on HC about the speaker thing, someone said just plug a speaker cable in and use a multimeter to check the resistance on the other end of the cable, should be around 4 ohms lower than the actual ohmage of the speaker. Correct?

If so, anyone know if this will be any good for checking speaker resistance - http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=37279&criteria=multimeter&doy=14m10 ? Cheers!

Cheers for the link, didnt think of ordering from Europe! Will have to compare that price to matamp.

Although, this sentence doesnt make sense to me at all "NOTE: Fender Grill Cloth pattern requires amp-wide + 10cm as order quantity"

Gonna get a before pic later probably. Turns out I dont even need to make a frame for it like I thought I might have to, I can just put some strips of velcro on the edges to hold it on, it'll stick to the inner "lip" of the cab I think, tis a fuzzy carpetty material.

Maybe because you need to wind it around the wooden frame and then find a nice spot for the pattern? No idea ...

Presumably it means "In order to fit properly you need to buy a piece of cloth that's 10cm wider than your amp" (or in your case, cab)?

So if your cab is 75cm wide, you need an 85cm wide piece of cloth?  (NB: That's only 2 inches or so extra on each side, not that much if the edges are a bit ragged anyway....)

ahh, makes a bit more sense now :P

Anyway, heres the before pics! First ones got most of my stuff in it, minus my LP which is in its case, 2nd is the cab by itself but I forgot to put flash on

Definately still want to have a silver grille though, red and black will look cr@p with a silver and black Laney on top!

I'm so digging beige cloth with black Tolex. It's the Bogner look and for me the most sexy combination (especially since I saw P!nk rub her butt on a Boigner 4x12 :)

What are the speakers you got in there?

Beige eh? Could work.

They are Eminence USA Legends of some sort. Cant see a model number or ohmage on them at all though  :?

Did some really bad mock ups in photoshop to help decide but they both seem like they'll look pretty cool. First is just some metal style grille thing, looks kinda cool with the red and black under it -

And this ones Fender-style silver cloth - http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/4222/silvervg2.jpg

BTW the head which I will be using it with is a GH50L, which is black and silver so I thought the 2nd one might match better, but the first one looks a bit more unique and different..

Edit - Actually.. just 'shopped on the laney colour grille (the greyish black) and I think it looks the best -

Dont know where to get cloth this colour though?
(Yes, if you go on HC you'll see I copy and paste my threads so I can get as many opinions as possible :P)

you can get Fender grillcloth on the web - there are plenty of places.  Arbiter (Fender Uk Distributor) should be able to supply you with some grille cloth - I've bought Fender spares from them before.

There is also a (UK) company on ebay that are selling cabs - they should be able to sort you out with some grille cloth.

Ah right, I'll have a look for em then!

Cheers for the help. Do you know anything about how to correctly check my speakers ohmage?

Edit - just plugged into the cab with my v-amp 2, each jack on the back is for each speaker, so I'm guessing they are the same ohmage. It was really quiet though, is this normal? Guessing so as the V-amp is just a preamp/amp modeller and has no power amp I dont think..

Ok bit of an update. Looked at the bottom speaker to see if it was labled. Turns out its not a legend, but an Eminence Beta 8ohm. So I plugged into the what I thought was the bottom speakers input, with the 8 ohm out from my Fender and for some reason the sound came from both speakers, wheras with the v-amp it came from just the bottom one when plugged into the same socket.

Sounds AMAZING! With rat pedal going into the fender its much clearer than before. I will still get a multimeter to check but I'm thinking this ones an 8 ohm input as it didnt sound bad/damaged, and didnt harm my fender in any way.
