have warpig bridge and crawler neck in my gib sg, covers most of them tones (originally 2 crawlers)  you said, apart from maiden more stratish sound needed there

Maiden had Dimarzio Super Distortions in their strats for years (and now Hot Rails and JB Jrs.).....

I think this is the Nailbomb's job description here... the Warpig is a little bit more over the top...

For blues, Tim recommended the excellent 'Stormy Mondays' for a  thinner bodied or hollow guitar. I moved a set from my Les Paul to my S.G. and they sounded even better/more open in the S.G.

I must admit however, that they will most probably be much too sweet and clean for your heavier influences. Blues: yes,  Zeppelin: yes; - but Sabbath and beyond - no way.

Just wanted to say that the S.G. is a very versatile model. It is so often assumed that S.G. = Metal. With SMs ( or MQs ?) fitted it can do Jazz and blues very, very well.

I am sure that at some point, forum member 'Twinfan' will recommend the hotter and spikier Riff-Raffs.

Oh well,  back to the inevitable 'Nailbomb' recomendations.

:D

Regards to all,

Derek.

Am I that predictable??  ;)

For the tones you want, I'd got for a Nailbomb set.  Riff Raffs are great for everything up to Maiden and Sabbath, but for Pantera and Megadeth you'll want something a bit heavier.

A set of Crawlers might be good too?

Hi Twinfan,

it's not that you are predictable, just that you have found something that really works for you and have described well just how and why it does...

Another SG + Riff Raff devotee here too. I wanted something "vintage" in the SG and everybody said Riff Raffs .... and they were dead right. Not sure they'd be right for getting much heavier than AC/DC type stuff though.

I think they'll do great for anything up to Iron Maiden levels of gain, but for Megadeth and other scooped mid type tones you'll want something a bit hotter.

Just ordered a Riff Raff for my SG-X.   :D

We've had the SG debate quite a few times, but it's worth repeating Tim's recommendations - he says medium-output pickups can tend to sound muddy/bassy in SGs, and recommends either Vintage models (SM, Alnico V Mule, RR) or high-output ones (Miracle Man, Warpig) that can "drive through" the timber.

The Nailbomb does tend to get recommended for everything   , but it's pretty close to the output of the MM, and quite a few people have said they sound good in SGs.

Why not go with a Crawler/ Riff Raff bridge and Stormy monday/ Mississippi queen neck?

I would say Miracle Man in the Bridge and either a Cold Sweat or Riff Raff in neck...

I'm doing the Warpig in the bridge and Mississippi Queen in the neck; I'll take it to 11 when everyone else is at 10.

Mules would be good for the more classic rock bands, but you'd want something hotter for the likes of Megadeth and Pantera .... I'd say Crawlers, which have a vintage vibe, but are hot enough to take you into metal territory.  No one pickup is ideal for all tones, but the Crawlers are very versatile.

Yeah, sorry man but yeah was expecting that or mules.

Anyway, you might have to make a comprimise between those styles, the tones seem to be quite different. Nailbomb bridge is supposedly very versatile (not tried anything yet) so maybe that in the bridge and crawler in neck (get the best of both worlds, maybe try to create a kind of in between tone thats your own.) Wait for TO he's usually right, or try PMing Tim. Hope you find what your looking for.  :)

I'm waiting for them to arrive in the mail; however, I have to wait to put it all together because I had to rescue this SG. I stripped and refinished it because of cigarette burns in the neck and cracks in the finish from abuse. I am trying to get the final clear coats on it; I've already sanded through the color twice and burnt through it with the buffer once, so it has been a bit of a cursed SG so far. The Warpig should be just the right P'up for this guitar and the MQ will help me smooth it all out I hope. The MQ was suggested by Tim and I think TO second it, I’ll be seeing TO on Saturday he has a guitar with the WP and MQ in it but it’s not an SG. Maybe I can talk him into putting up a clip of his guitar with that combo.

You should update the guys on UGF.

I know they are dying to know how far the SG Project has got.

RorySRV,
You have to look. I did update UGF after your last post where I said it was cursed.  I will take some more pictures soon; however, I plan on giving it about six more coats of clear before I do any more sanding or buffing I do not want to go through again.

thanks for your help, what about warpig for bass, nailbomb for treble?

I thought about that combo, but was told to just go with calibrated Warpig set. The choice is wide open. I went with the P90 MQ for the contrast in sound.
