Title: Installing pickup in a PRS 513
Post by: californiarock on October 19, 2006, 08:09:45 PM
Hello from France,

Does anybody try to change the pickups of 513 ?

I'd like to install bare knuckle pickups  rebel yell !

do you know if it will be possible ? because I don't like the sound of my 513, there is to much medium or I don't know what that is not musical.......

Thanks

Bonjour mon ami, bienvenue au BKP forum :)

Although I don't own a 513, I have played one & inspected it up close.  From my memory of it (& looking at some pictures), you might need to rout some of the body to make a full sized humbucker fit - as well as the little curved bit in between the two coils, the two singles together on a 513 seem a shade thinner than a humbucker.

If you used a mounting ring it would cover up an routing that had taken place - you just couldn't put it back as it was.  If I had a £4k guitar that I didn't really like, I'm not sure I'd do it :)

Like I said though, I don't own a 513.  It would be best to get a full sized humbucker in your hand & hold it next to the 513 to see if it looks like it would fit...

I'm thinking..... and try to find a solution but,

Maybe you're right , the best is to sell it.....

but unplugged sound seems to be good that's why I'm gone do it
first I have to find a pickup that fit and if it's ok, I ask for a luthier to do the modification

Sorry for my english, I hope you'll anderstand me

I'm not sure how the 513 pickups are made but perhaps bareknuckle could rewind them for you to improve the sound but keep the same appearance?

That's a really good idea, I tried a 513 a few month ago and was blown away by the feel of it. But I wasn't that convinced by the pickups thow, interesting system but a bit complicated and a little lacking in term of tone. That said, I would NEVER touch anything on such a beauty (I tried a blue one, just incredible)
So a rewind could be the solution, more tone with an unaltered look. (even if those would still be single coils)

Gotta agree, I'd never 'butcher' a guitar like that which you'll end up regretting. The re-wind is a great idea other than that sell it  and by something else.

I recently tried a Custom 22 and was very, very impressed and I'll be looking to strike a deal on that shortly.
