Hi everybody, I'm new, so be nice :D
Well, I'm getting myself a Ibanez S470DXQM.
And the pickups suck. So i need some new pups.
And then I want some BKs.
But which ones are best?
I play mostly Hard- and Classic Rock. It would have to have a good crunchy distortion but nice cleans too.
Since the guitar i H/S/H I would need a single coil too, but are the BK singlecoils good? Haven't been able to find much about them.
Thanks in advance.

hi, welcome to le ol' forumonian....

probably looking at a Nailbomb or Crawler

yep, just as good as the 'buckers from what i've heard, you'd probably be looking at the Irish Tour for the hard rock sound, unless you wanted to venture into metal territory...which is where i get lost and run to the hills so to speak :D
Thanks in advance.
you are most welcome :D:D
-
Thanks :)
Would you recommend the same humbucker for both bridge and neck?
And how are the cleans on those things?
No matter what I'll probably get an eargasm compared to my Behringer Strat copy :P
-
cleans are great on all BKPs with Alnico magnets, not sure about the ceramics...
i've heard that having the same neck and bridge has it's advantages...but i think it depends on whether you are going for absolute versatility or just for a specific sound...
-
Well I would of course want some versatility.
But all the BKPs just seem so great.. So hard to choose :?
-
I have a pair of Mules and they are really versatile.. but theyre in an LP so not sure how they'd sound in an Ibanez. From what I've read here the Nailbomb seems to work well in Ibz but I've never played a NB so wouldnt really know. Theres also the VHII or Rebel Yells which might be better for rock than the Nailbomb.
-
How about Warpigs? Aren't they good for metal/hard rock?
-
warpigs are more for downtuned death/doom metal from what i've heard
-
Okay.. A bit to heavy then..
But you both recommended a NB so maybe a calibrated NB set?
And an Irish tour in the middle..
How does that sound?
-
sounds like a plan... but when you call BKP ask for what they recommend as well...
-
I was considering buying a S series guitar for around christmas time, and was considering Rebel Yells for the HBs, but hadn't really decided yet, as I wanted to play a few more S models before comitting.
The RYs seem to be more biased towards mids & top end, and where designed with mahogany bodied guitars in mind. They also appear to have amazing cleans (& apparently split well)
I'd suggest mailing Tim as well as checking out the players section.
Rob...

I'll mail Tim, he must know which ones are best for what :)
But thanks for all the help dudes. When i get my new axe and pups I'll come back with many pictures :D
-
I'll mail Tom, he must know which ones are best for what :)
lol won't help much, his name's Tim :D
-
I didn't say Tom..
Just look in my post :)

Just look in my post :)
 Maybe give Steve a try too, Tim may be busy with the new band...
Just to throw my opinion into the mix: Rebel Yells and a Slowhand is what I'd take...You get the awesomeness of the Rebel Yells (check out Steve Stevens' clips and you'll see what I mean) and the Slowhands are good too. They appear to have quite a chunky amount of mids compared to other single coils, which to my mind would make them a better combination with the Rebels...
But having said that, you'd probably do just as well with Mules, Black Dogs, Crawlers, Abraxas or anything in that sort of area
So yeah, give Tim/Steve a shout and see what they think :)
-
The RYs sound awsome, especially the distortion.. But so does all the BKPs..
It would be easier if I just bought them all :D
But I'm just a poor teen :(
-
I'm in the same situation, and I spent ages agonising over my first set of BKPs (Holydiver and a pair of slowhands - see left) and I still maintain that I could've bought one of maybe 3 or 4 different sets and still been just as happy with them...
This combination gets me just about any tone I've wanted it to, but, from what I hear around here, a Nailbomb (and maybe some others I forget about) could do the same. I think that whichever set you end up with you'll be delighted with them, and should spend less time deciding and more time playing them when they get to you
Obviously not trying to play down the importance of getting something suitable, however - the man who buys a Miracle Man for blues will be slightly disappointed I fear :drink:
-
Yeah it seams like all the BKPs can play a bit of everything..
Thats why I was thinking to different humbuckers for more versatility (sp?)
But I guess the best idea would be to ask Tim, not Tom. :) Or Steve..
But no matter what I'll be exited as hell when I get them.
I hate my Behringer
-

That's what I was thinking myself actually. For metal and hard rock (yet will clean up very nicely!), Nailbombs... for hard and classic rock, Rebel Yells, Crawlers (although may be too bassy), and the VHII comes to mind... or of course Mules.

If you go with the Nailbomb, the Irish Tour seems to balance very well so it's the perfect choice for a middle position. Maybe even something quieter if you do not use the middle pickup alone, but use it in conjunction with the neck or bridge and want it to clean up.
-
Of the soundclips I heard I liked the Rebel Yells best. The distortion sounded great. It's hard to chose. But i prefer them over Nailbombs from what I heard. I probably won't use the middle so much.
-
Did you look at the video Mr Stevens posted from when he used the Rebels on tour?...It's actually amazing  There are no other words

I'll have a look when I get home. But I think I'll go for Rebel Yells
-
They do sound pretty sweet.. But I'll wait till I get my axe before I will finally decide :)
Thanks for all the help..
-
I have a HSH with Nailbomb/Irish Tour/Abraxas from bridge to neck. It was getting some serious playing on Saturday when everyone came around and I think Chris went home wanting the Nailbomb!
The body is an Ibanez, but I rerouted it and put in a Kahler trem. Currently it has a MIM Fender neck, but there is one on the way from Warmoth (then it will have Sperzels too and will stay in tune a lot better when you wail on the kahler!).
-
Yeah.. The Nailboms sound good to.. Hard to chose.. :) I'll try to email the BK guys

I am pretty sure the decision is simple. Look at it this way....
Rebel Yell: they're brighter and pinch really well even at lower gain settings. They will do classic rock great but may sound a little bit more 80s due to their brightness (which is perfectly fine by me). Also when playing with a band or even another guitarist, they really do sound as equally huge as when you're playing alone, I can tell you that from experience.
Nailbomb: From what I've been able to gather they are meaner and they aren't as bright so you need a little more gain to get the same screaming characteristics out of them. I have a Nailbomb bridge coming to me in a few weeks (just ordered yesterday) so I can tell you how that works out.
What it comes down to is both pickups do hard rock great. The Nailbomb is more hard rock and heavier, and the Rebel Yell is more up to hard rock. That said, I've heard some Nailbomb clean clips that sound pretty damn good and I've played thrash acceptably on my Rebel Yells too.
I think a Slow Hand would be a good middle pickup with Rebel Yells too.
-
^ w00t someone agrees with me for once [/dance]
-
Thats also the advice Tim gave me..
So I ordered 2xRY and 1xSH
Looking forward to getting them.. How long does it normally take? :)
-
Mine took 3 - 4 days, but some have said a week or so...depends on how busy they are really, but i wouldn't think it'll take longer than a week
-
Thats in England?
I live in Denmark so it'll propably take a bit longer..
-
I was going to suggest a Crawler set with an Irish Tour in the middle, but PhilKing's suggestion of Nailbomb/Irish Tour/Abraxas sounds good too!
-
I ordered RYs and one Slow hand..
Recommended by Tim :)
-
Wuhuu.. Got my BKPs today.. :)
But I can first get them from the post office tomorrow.. :(
