Title: How would you get this tone?

Kalmah are a melodic death band from Finland, they have one of the most unique tones i have ever heard.

Don't listen to the stuff from the new album though called 'The Black Waltz'.
Listen to the other 3 albums though.

I know they used a Line 6 AX212 for most of the recordings, also the lead guitarist used a Custom Jackson guitar with stock jackson pickups h-s-s and according to him they were not typical jackson pups they were more darker sounding.

What i am asking is how do i acheive this sound, like what settings do you think in bass. mids, treble etc. Also what BKP's would point me in this direction, i'm thinking a Warpig.

Any help will be appreciated.

(you get WAY too hung up on others tones bud. You obviously like the heavier side of music and 'Pigs in either variety will suit ya, just DO IT and get YOUR tone! ) ;)

judging by heroes to us, for the lead tone, i'd set the treble to 10, and bass and mid to 0.

I wasn't really impressed by the tone, to be honest- something like an engl screamer or laney vh100r (or i assume gh, though I haven't tried it) might get you close-ish.

:D It`s amazing how many European Power Metal bands i`m hearing now that are trying to sound like Pagans Mind  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

As for there older sounding stuff. Any of the BK high gain P/U`s will do the job. As for amp settings sounds like there "Scalloping" the sound. Turn up your high gain amp module then turn down the Middle whilst upping the Bass & Treble.

A point to remember. In conversation with Tim he pointed out that one of the probs with dealing with American Guitarists is there tendency to turn the middle on there amps down or off. BK`s are designed to operate as a "Full"  Sounding P/U. So you will be changing the Tone of your P/U if you start to turn the middle down to much.

What if i want to play Metallica and other thrash, surely the Warpig can't do those aswel as the others.

True, but will that do Kalmah too? haha i'm so annoying!

Edit: i found the tone! sounds pretty darn heavy, kinda like a dimebag tone, i won't be keeping it, but it might come back in the future.

No offense to anyone in the US (for the record, I'm from the US), but the US is made up of 95% stupid people, and not even just in a musicial sense.

We are the only country stupid enough to elect a president who apparently puts food on his family.

More on the topic of this post, Kalmah is a cool band.  There is a haunting element to their tone...

:D I wouldn`t go all the way calling all Americns stupid, but that guitar sound is very American sounding & lets be fair it didn`t do Nuno Bettoncort any harm now did it !  :wink:

British guitarists have allways had a tendency to keep the middle on there amp settings up as it gives a fuller sound. There are merits & cons to both.

slightly off topic, but remember the Cranberries?  hardly a metal band but i still cringe when i hear "Zombie" on the radio and that horrible totally scooped distorted guitar comes in :shock:

(they were Irish, i know.  we can't all be brilliant)

it's like the guitarist from Ugly Kid Joe joined for a minute or two.  now they scooped their mids!  and sounded all the worse for it.

My Uncle is a working musician whose band where on "Kelly" (for those that don't know, Parkinson without budgets, or guests, or production values) on TV just after the Cranberries broke big. The 'Berries where the main guests that evening. After a while sitting around, trying to elicit some craic, any craic at all from them (dour bar-stewards to a man), one of the fellas in my uncle's band asked if that was how they came by their name. The cranberries asked what he meant. "You're sour wee bar-stewards who'll be forgot about after Christmas". They didn't take it well

( as well as guests and production values you forgot talent and any iota of charisma, the bearded git almost makes Noel Edmonds seem bearable....almost..)

Can I add to that list (lack of personality, ability & guests). Nobody under 65 was allowed in the audience.

How come that show always featured the 'wee gay one' out of whatever boy band that happened to be popular at the time. Is that fat git till on UTV ?

Back on topic, not only are US guitarists tones too scooped, theyre too processed too (yes I know not just US guitarists are guilty of such things but so many of them take it to extremes). Whats wrong do they not like the sound of the bloody instrument in the 1st place.

I remember Bernie Torme (when he was standing in with Ozzie) thought it was running marshall amps at 110 volts caused tone issues (thats why he thought US rock / metal guitarists always used humbuckers).

his interview with Murray Walker was truly arse clenching in it's awfulness, although of course good old Murray managed to remain cheerful until near the end when even he looked irritated.

that rhythm tone sounds great the lead tone sucks though..

i'd say a lot of that tone is due to production though and not so much tone, the lead tone sounds digital like a pod..
