Post by: Crazy_Joe on October 27, 2006, 01:58:29 PM
YAY,

Couple of questions, first of all, do i plug my guitar into the hi or lo input thing?
Also how long should i leave it on stand by for?

Pics coming soon!!

Varies between manufacturer, but most seem to recommend leaving to warm up for 1-3mins before switching from standby->on.  Personally, I leave my Mesa for at least 3 mins.

Also, NEVER use a valve amp without a speaker cab plugged in (e.g. just running line out into a desk/recorder etc) - you bugger the output transformer.

Hope you enjoy your new toy - now get off the forum & go make some noise! :)

Personal preference - depends on what sound you're after.

In other words, Hi

Lo input is best for guitars with humbuckers. Hi output is best for single coils.

Otherwise things sound too mushy.

Hi is just more sensative and easier to over drive
Lo is less gain and thus requires more push to send it into OD.

I've never used the Lo input in an amp ever.. :P

Oh shite, that looks $%&#ing awesome!

So what kinda sounds are you getting from this beast?! Enough gain for power metal?

BTW - how wide is your cab? I've got a feeling my heads gonna hang off the sides of the cab a bit :(
Title: Laney is HERE!!
Post by: Crazy_Joe on October 27, 2006, 06:03:50 PM
It's a $%&#ing MONSTER!!

It has tones of gain!!! I love it :D:D:D

As for the cab on the Marshall website it just says it can fit a Marshall head on it. I gotta eat now, but if you search for the dimensions in google you will probs find them because i think i did before but i can't remember them.

ok what about versatility joe my boy...

?

does it seem one-trick pony-ish at all?

or can you take down the gain a LITTLE (not crunch/slightly overdriven or anything) and get an all around hard-rock  tone instead of thrashy metal style?

cheeers

It can do anything, i have had a wide range of tones whilst i have been experimenting today, the only fault i have with it is that i wont be able to go from clean to monster gain, but that serves me right for buying a one channel amp really haha.

Anyone who's used Laneys.. how does the standby switching work?

On my Fender theres power and standby, I switch the power to on and leave the standby on standby for a bit, then switch the standby switch to on when I'm ready to play..

tom, my LC30s is weeeeird,

i still dont get it tbh lol...

and Joe, good point lol, but it has footswitchable gain right? so just how much of a difference can you get via the footswitch?

i.e. how clean to how dirty?

if you think it has heavy distortion at 3...

my gain goes from 10 at bedroom volume to about 4 at full whack, and it sounds way heavier at full whack, too.

Tom - standby works exactly as you've described.

I've found that the GH50L doesn't do clean.  At best it'll do slightly dirty, footswitched to metal rhythm.  Otherwise it does crunch/metal to searing lead.
Title: Laney is HERE!!
Post by: _tom_ on October 28, 2006, 12:06:17 AM
hmm Joe said he does it differently to that! Says he leaves the power switch on off/0, switches standby to on/1, then switches power to on/1.

Whereas on the fender you switch the power to on, standby on off/standby, then switch the standby switch up to on!

Confusing.. why cant valve amps just have an automatic standby or someting

well single channel heads are better anyway.. I honestly can't think of any setup better, I love Plexi's, JCM800, 900MkIII's, Laneys anything with just one channel.. they're so much more responsive and less cluttered.

plus dial back the volume on your guitar and u get that wonderful crunchy clean ;)

#3 can we have some sound clips please :D

gratz!!! that's an AWESOME!! amp

as for versatility

paul gilbert uses a gh100, opeth use a gh100, IMO, completely diferent on the tonal spectrum..
though paul uses a boss OD and a couple of other pedals and opeth use gt3-gt6 pedalboards -> bypass the preamp, so basicaly.. it can do anything.
by itself, i'd experiment with the preamp tubes for slightly more gain and have two sets of output tubes ready.. one low headroom, for quick OD and one for higher headroom. you can fit el34's and 5881 in em too

 lol alright alright, touche, or however you spell it.

as a matter of fact though... im leaning towards a higher gain Laney, (GH50 or the Tony Iommi thing maybe), cause from what ive heard, from the likes of Joe and from various other places, and form using my LC in my band, i like the idea of a Laney, or maybe to save up more and go for a Genz Benz combo...

that's awesome.

seriously, though, if the gh50/100L is anything like the vh100r (and I've heard several reports that it may actually be better), then it'll be awesome.

problem is, it's not just as cheap as you think- when you factor in the price of a cab (unless you go second hand) you're up to maybe £500 at least.

I was only kidding by the way, sambo.

have you sold your lc30 yet? if not, just use it for cleans with an A/B box. EDIT: if it has enough headroom.

Post by: sambo on October 29, 2006, 06:42:24 PM
i havent actually, and thats a good idea, i think it probably does have enough head room. although, the H&K has nicer cleans imo, so that might be a good idea too, althouuugh the whole point of getting a new amp, was to a.) get away from a stack/half-stack for convenience, and b.) get something thats gonna keep me satisfied on its own (without the use of pedals or other shitee e.t.c.)....

arghhh its such a hard choice!

and i want that El Diablo combo so bad!!!

Sam do you need perfectly clean tones? If not just roll down your guitar volume.. sounds better to my ears than perfectly clean, for rock anyway.
Title: Laney is HERE!!
Post by: sambo on October 29, 2006, 07:38:52 PM
mmm i dunno tbh, pretty much totally clean, having said that, i havent experimented playing our stuff with a slightly dirty sound, so cant be certain. theres a fair bit of picking and strumming chords, some of which are open chords, so hmmm could work i guess...  ?
Title: Laney is HERE!!
Post by: dave_mc on October 29, 2006, 09:34:07 PM
yeah, cleans with volume rolled down = awesome.

problem is, i've heard that with the gh, to get truly brutal metal tones, when you roll down the volume, it's still not really clean. stands to sense, i suppose.

Tell her to sort herself out or you'll cut her house keeping and send her down the mines!

Grats on the Laney dude.  Last night I was just checking out Laney sound clips and such since I'm really only familiar with the old ones, and I must say they sound pretty sweet!

Did you find many clips of the GH50L? I like to hear as many as possible, I've only heard 3 or 4 but they all sound perfect.

I saw a few on youtube, all by the same guy.  They all sound great!

roll the distortion back (i.e. the gain) and crank up the master!

jesus, if I put my engl gain up to 10 and cranked the master, george bush would probably invade to find the WMD's...

I turned my Koch up to full Volume last year when i got it and had no neighbours upstairs in the old place. I took the attenuator out of the signal too. Loud is to small a word for it. I actually felt a bit ill after 20 or 30 minutes cos' it did mangle my internal organs! 120 watts from a 4 x 12. I had to sit down after with a cup of hot sweet tea! This Sunday I've got studio time booked. So I shall try again, with a drummer and bass player! I've got so much steam to let off it's not funny! I may pen a few riffs and lines about traffic wardens and put as much bile and vitriol into it as is possible. I got 4 tickets today delivering medical supplys around Harley Street in the west end. One of them called me a w**ker and accused me of racism after i said 'you lot are a joke' in some poor attempt to goad me into an assault. F*ck London and our Mayor, he is a lying dodgy dangerous c*nt!

Anyway lets turn our amps up and get some ASBO's!

hope you're wearing some ear protection dude..

those amps easily pump out in excess of 110dB. in a small room, which is even worse. if you go from 0 to full blast it will damage your hearing.

just that you're aware.. which you probably are but i'm just saying. wear earplugs :!:

i had the same thing with my el Diablo   , on the clean channel!!  7 string miracle man and grinding riffs, a bookcase fell apart and i couldn't hear properly for the rest of the day!  yep, a hotplate is definately my next purchase!

er, earplugs are a lot cheaper than a hotplate (assuming you don't get the custom fitted earplugs, and you have the opportunity to crank the amp reasonably frequently)...

for yourself, yeah, but by the time you've bought earplugs for everyone within earshot, you could nearly have built a soundproof studio!

and a hotplate is more useful generally.  only thing i don't like about them is that you have to get a different one for every ohmage, why not have a switchable load like everyone else?

^ haha, touche!

But yeah, it is a bit of a gip the way the hotplates are only for a specific ohmage.
