So what pckups work well in basswood and what don't?
I know Nailbombs do, and Warpigs. I imagine other high output pups like Crawlers and Holy Divers will.
How about VHIIs or Mules? Do they require a more tonefull wood to get a good tone?

I don't think Crawlers would be best in a basswood guitar. I think the sound would end up being a lower midrange mush.

What are the tonal qualities of basswood? What eq range of pickups go best?

my Painkillers kick some serious tush in JP6.

Any pickup will work.

I always think basswood has a very "neutral" sort of sound, it doesn't colour the tone too much - it's almost like you hear the pickups more than the wood. You can get away with pups that would never work in a warm mahogany guitar or a bright ash guitar. So yeah, just about anything.
Having said that, I've had a couple of basswood Japanese Fenders that sounded very weedy. So maybe it's anything except vintage-output single coils. :?

yea basswood is pretty neutral, just about anything works in it.
Nailbombs shine in Basswood apparently though.

Yes, and no. First, it depends on the cut of basswood to some extent. Despite basswood being cheap, there IS bad basswood. But basswood is fairly smoothly voiced, but it is does have a bass heavy slant to it, so Crawlers will probably be overkill on the lows.

I've currently got a Nailbomb in one basswood guitar and am looking for something 'similar but different' to put in another (HH with FR) and have been considering VHIIs, RYs and maybe even Mules.
Basically I want a chunkier bass than the NB, more air in the treble and good fat harmonics in the mid but less agressive in the upper mids. I think a lower output pickup will help with this.
What do you think?

gingataff, I think Crawlers are what you are looking for.

jsut a question, how do you think the nailbombs will be at nailing modern metal tones, eg kse?
-
Yes it could do it well, but I'd say the NB has more character and crunch than the KSE sound which to me is a bit fizzy.
