Title: Koa and pickups
Post by: Jonesy on November 01, 2006, 11:02:31 AM
Im looking into a koe tele but realy dont have a clue what the tonal characteristics would be like?

I'd also be getting hold of some bkp's (obviously 8) ) and aiming for a lot of clean country esque sounds...as well as some punk and Radiohead type drive...what do you guys suggest?

I'd also be doing a fiar bit of slide work on this guiar...so would a hotter pickup be better for this?

I've never owned a koa guitar, but Warmoth say it has a warm sound similar to mahogany, but with a little more brightness.  Is the neck koa as well, or just the body?

Are you going for standard Tele-style pickups, or could it be any pickup combination?  I reckon a hot-ish Tele bridge pickup and a P90 neck might be pretty funky.

Hi,

I would go for a Boss or Yardbird Neck pup, both sound amazing on my strats. A basswood body has very similar tone to ash so it should have a similar tone to a normal tele. I would also go for a Boss bridge pup too, not that I have on, but im guessing it will be stunning :) I have a Mississippi Queen in the bridge and that kicks ass, as well as piledrivers in my other teles and they are great too. Very solo friendly with lots of mids and enough bite to cut through. Very easy to play if you get me.

Hope it helps.

Also, why would you use a lovely piece of koa on an electric (hehehe), thats a waste of around 20  ukeleles!
