Finally got in there at last! Only to find the bass player hadn't learnt none of the things we agreed and the drummer hadn't been on a kit for 4 months! Oh well that's rock and roll. We spent most of the day 'singing' 'Hurry Up Harry' by Sham 69 FFS! They didn't get that one right either but we did have a good laugh and by 5:30 it sounded 'ok'!
:D
P.S I started a new job today too and it's really good!
-
Nice one, Johnny.
Sometimes I feel the same way about my band. We'll start working on something and I'll think to myself Has anyone even PRACTICED this tune yet?! Of course, it's usually just me projecting b/c I'm tired/cranky and not playing as well as I want to, myself.
-
Ha, I feel that too - the 'hello, this isn't hard? Pay attention at the back!' mentality!
-
I've never played in a band and I think this is why
-
It's when your drummer hasn't learnt the songs because he "spilt pineapple juice on the CD you burnt me and it won't play anymore....". *grrrrrr*

Well you don't expect drummers to know anything about washing do you ?

F.M tell me about it! The drummer and I'm gonna say it, how it is now I've got over the buzz of playing my half stack Koch amp on 3/4 volume with no attenuator  !! I became the time keeper and his stick count was 3-4 times the tempo of the song! My Nan's old cat could play them better and it's been dead for decades! The bass player now I think about it doesn't even know the meaning of the terms Bar, Flat, Sharp, Tuner and Octave. Then there is his complete lack of rhythm and no ear for a what key were in or whole tones in pitch let alone semis! Their nice lads but have this anarchic thing is just a bit too far, i mean the bass player is 41 ffs and moaning that he is always skint. Hello get a ffing job you lazy $%er! We're were supposed to rehears the pistols never mind the bollocks album, which to be fair is a piece of piss to most Rock/punk outfits, but it seems I'm wrong. I'll get on a stage if i had some faith but i know that they haven't tried to learn any since last Sunday as his girlfriend told me last night. Anyway I'm gonna push them Sunday and see what happens and then tell probably tell them to learn them and get back to me! Christ I sound like a whinging git but when i was told they know the songs already, it would seem it's yet another load of beer talk!

:D This is perhapes the most difficult part of being in a band. Trying to find people that are as dedicated to it as you are. My personal bugbear was & is singers. You no the type "Have you got any gigs booked yet" this is before you`ve had a single rehearsal & before you`ve even got a singer ! Now when there stupid enough to say it i reply "Yep next Saturday you`ve got 5 days to learn the entire set" you should see there faces !!!!
It`s allways difficult & easy to say from afar but if your really serious about playing then these type of guys/girls you need to drop immediatly or they`ll just drive you mad & you`ll end up not wanting to play.

I should stop reading this thread or I'm never going to want to do a gig

Getting a band off the ground is very very hard unless you can find other like-minded people agree on music, rehearse properly and share a sense of humour and even then it is not easy but if you get it right, the rewards are there though sadly not of te financial type. I am a veteran of many bands and the "band polictics" thing always fills me with dismay. Best of luck though Johnny.

It always generate hillarious stories but I'm with JT, If you doubt about the potential or the seriousness of your band mates and wanna go further you'd better change them (or quit the band).
-
Thanks for the replys lads. The more i think about it the more it's going to frustrate me. I rang a mate of mine in Glasgow about the 'Bass Tabs' for The Bollocks album cos' the bass player (why he can't get them on the net himself is beyond me) said he needed the tabs. This mate of mine is the same age as me, played bass and guitar in bands for over 20 years (to eat and house himself 'cos of the unemployment up there for a few years) and we used to go to the studio with who ever we could get on drums and just have a laugh going through that album. Anyway he just sighed and said 'Tell him to listen to the album and play along with it!', which is what I said to them both last Sunday! Anyway we'll see what happens but if it doesn't change I'd rather go to the pub and drink Guinness and talk my way into a woman's drawers!!
Edit; If I manage to pull off this migration to Las Vegas then I should be able to get something going there. It's heaving with muso's. Monday nights in The Dive bar would suit me, even as a support! It's a great place to drink and watch bands. I watched a band there called Los Burbanks and bought a CD and T-Shirt on the strength of two songs!

We had studio time booked for 14:00 last Sunday. I was on my around to the Bass Players house as arranged, when I rang to see if he was ready. He wasn't up. Then he rang back and said 'I've got to take my girlfriend to her Mums as it's her birthday'! :x I give up already. I get one day off a week and now I'm doing a U turn and un-loading all my gear back into my flat and sitting there thinking, 'you let down c*nt!' There is no hope for this is there!
-
No.... there is no hope. Sorry to have to tell you but it's for the best
-
That is a p*sser Johnny-I was going to say something about bass players but then I remembered my origins.
-
Yes, there is, hope but if you're expecting it to be anything less than an uphill climb, regardless of where you live, then you're kidding yourself.
It's not easy to find like-minded musicians, but it IS possible.
There will always be excuses to hang it all up. Question is: are you gonna fold at the first sign of adversity, or flip it the bird and let it feed your drive to make it on your own terms and under your own steam?!
There are people that will support and cheer you on. I'm one of em.
But, the decision is yours.
-
:D Of Course you could always use your Cubase Pc system to lay down drum tracks record the bass then burn to a CD, take Cd player + Amp & guitar to rehearsal rooms plug into PA system then play along & have fun whilst being able to crank up your amp !
And if any aspiring muso`s turn up or happen to pass by your rehearsal room........

^ PMSL Jt!  You can see why Fiat used Robots to build their little Stradas in Wales in the early 80's now!!
Thanks for the encouragement Ben but their not that like minded, they seem like the type who thinks everyone owes them something. I can't handle being let down like that after talking with him on the phone and arranging things 24 hours before. I'll give it a while longer as it is good playing loud but there has to be a more than just that. I want them to learn their parts and turn up!
-
Hey Johnny, have you checked formingbands.co.uk? I'm sure there will be plenty of like-minded guys around the London area - particularly if you want to play the Pistols :D
