Title: A Good 24 Hours
Post by: willo on November 07, 2006, 10:33:42 PM
I've just had a really great 24 hours, well, musically speaking - I just had to tell my favourite bunch of gearheads!

Well, I woke up this morning to the sound of my doorbell. It was Mr Postman and he was delivering my new FX pedal, an Antelope FX Morning Dew EQ/Buffer:

I'd heard some really good things about this unit, and just managed to get on the waiting list before Brian is discontinuing the model. It turned up this morning, serial #94 (made me feel all special, I think only 150 were made) and I had a good play with it. I'm not normally a person given to deliberating on my EQ but this has given me such a sweet rhythm tone, I couldn't stop playing my Hendrix doublestops. Big smiles all round, plus I managed to escape the VAT payment!

Now, this was just part of the optimism:

As you may or may not know, I am now playing guitar in two bands around the Newcastle area. One is called 'Pilot' and is just taking off (ahem), and is an instrumental trio. The other band is one I have recently been asked to join on lead guitar, called 'Strangers In Polaroids' - this is more based in indie type stuff but I've been asked to 'bring the rock' as it were, and we're getting into Sonic Youth territory now (but all is not lost metalheads! I still play the odd pinch-harmonic and widdly solo).

Well, I've only been in Polaroids for about a month but in that time we've had a bit of a problem with the drummer and the bassist has family commitments. So we've been looking for replacements, and finally it all seems to be falling into place...met one of the possible drummers last night and he seems like a nice guy. I've also found out that our singer is pretty damn 'connected' - locally and nationally. So, provided we actually make some good music, things are quite positive.

And then, the other band, Pilot. Well, it's been a bit tortuous at times; we recorded a demo the other week but the mics $%&#ed up and only the worst takes recorded well enough for release (as we are an improvised band, take to take can vary pretty significantly). So I was not happy at all with the demo, very disappointed actually. So much so, that we didn't release it, didn't plug it, and only really played it to a couple of friends. But then today, I find out that somehow some guy who owns a record store and an indie label in town has heard it, likes it and wants to promote it instore as a featured up-and-coming local band! I still want to re-record it but this is all good!

Who knows - it might all come crashing down - but for the first time in a long while I actually feel optimistic about my music!

Ha, cheers Ben. Yes, I have to stay 'under the radar' with the pinch harmonics and (my own favourite) the Moog Ring Modulator. I'm like some kind of secret agent sent from the world of rock...
