Title: Which head to get 3 laneys to go through
Post by: Joe Dorcia on November 07, 2006, 11:08:25 PM
Ok then, changing my DSL 50 for a new head. I want a laney, after much deliberation and testing of other more expensive amops in the same style (including all the usuals of matamp and Hiwatt etc) and then I came to a Laney GH100L.

It had superb cleans which were perfect, exactly what I was looking for, but then, i think I would get a distortion pedal (Keeley MT-2) and use the switchable gain as a boost.

Then i did some research and found the VH100R and the TT50H

The VH100R sounds cool, like two of the GH100L's in the same box, one is a clean and one a distortion channel

The TT50H has three channels, each with a boost and two switchable master volumes. Its also MIDI switchable.

Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of the WH100R or TT50H? I will try them soon but some initial info maybe helpful.

To let you know, I love fender, sparkling cleans, really really clean. And then very heavy, biting but smooth distortion. Bands like Oceansize, Biffy Clyro and Thrice are similar sounds to what I like.

Any help would be much appreciated

Joe

VH100R! If they did a 15w version I'd buy one in a heart beat

I compared both heads when i was trying out my VH100R. The VH100R's clean sound better, it's distortion was better and it had that 'thing' that the TT didn't have. The TT to my ears sounded kinda weedy.

My mate has a VH100R. Incredible amp. He got the head and a Marshall 4x12 cab for 400 quid. So, so lucky. He thinks the cab is cr@p but I think it sounds decent, and you can't grumble for the price he paid :D.

Thanks guys, cheers for the advice, I think I will need to try all of them to really know for sure. If I do get the VH100R I will be modding it to run at 40-50 Watts i believe.

I just need somewhere to have them in for me to try

VH100R is meant to be the "shiznit" (as the cool kids say) for Laney. It'd be even better at a lower wattage (for the overdrive channel anyway) I'd imagine never tried it though.

But if you can get the Bassist to sound like Ed from Thrice and your drummer to be like Ben from Biffy I'd be bloody impressed. Who are Oceansize???

You got a myspace or something for your band, I'll have to check you out.

I preferred the TT. Just to show the other opinion.

My drummer sounds better than Ben from biffy, and they are my favourite band. Ben uses a pretty lifeless kit. My bass player has a decent enough sound but its no Bx10 ampeg stack. It making him a 5-string stingray bass with custom made BKP 5 string humbucker bass pups (two J-bass pup stuck together :) AWESOME!

Oceansize are a $%&#ing amazing band, if you like weird time signatures, complex drums and loverly guitar parts then they are stunning. A musicians band. www.oceansize.com tis awesome stuff

Anyway, I tried out the WH100R today. OMG! it totally blew me away, £500 second hand but completely mint condition and re-tubed. My DSL 50 should be on ebay in the next day or so

Nice.

Thanks for all the input guys
