I have a Ibanez RG570 w/ a basswood body, maple neck and a rosewood fingerboard (edge tremolo)

I use 12-56 nickel wound strings tuned to DGCFAD.
I mostly play metal but have been playing alot of opeth lately.
this is the sort of tone that i'm pulling out of my current pup (dimarzio d sonic) that i'm moderatly happy with but i have always wanted to try out BKP.

to illustrate my playing style.
Will the warpig be too dark or muddy in this guitar? (i plan on pulling the string guage down a bit very soon and going back to standard tuning quite possibly, but i dont know how much of adifference this is going to make)
A little dark si fine, i consider opeth's tone to be a little dark, but not over dark.
Oppinions greatly appreciated.

I have an uncovered warpig in exactly the same guitar (Ibz - 570) and it's sound is huge and articulate.
I'm not too familiar with opeth but I'm certain the tone you describe is in there for the taking.
FYI - I have a BKP trilogy suite single coil in the middle and a Dimarzio FRED in the neck. (I'm gonna replace the Fred in time)
The Trilogy is able to keep up with the power of the Warpig much better than the Dimarzio Fast Track 2 dual blade humbucker which I had in that position before! Plus I get my splits back in positions 2 + 4.

I know this sounds like a smartarse question, but is Opeth not metal?
I don't think the Warpig will sound too dark, if it works in a mahogany SG it should be fine in basswood.

I think he's referring to the amount of clean & acoustic parts Opeth use - so the pickup he chooses needs to be able to do cleans & heavy riffage equally well....

Warpigs work great in basswood. It will do heavy riffage and smooth clean lines.
I think the Nailbomb has been recommended a few times for Opeth too.

I have a Nailbomb and think it could get a reasonable Opeth tone but I always feel the Opeth tone is high gain but quite vintagey, and the NB has a very crunchy high-mid grind that screams, it's certainly not a dark sounding pickup.

You are indeed correct.
Opeth use... live at least.
Seymour Duncan Fullshred Pickups (14.6k A5)
and Laney GH100L (i think i wrote that right) amps.
The Fullshred is considered a rather bright pickup yet i wouldnt consider opeths tone to be bright at all.....
I think this means the nailbomb is slightly higher output... however i've heard that it has pretty good cleans too.

Very nice cleans, it sounds beautiful through the fender models on my line6, especially the tweeds. It's fairly warm but with clear highs and a bit of the mid range AWW that I didn't used to like but has grown on me.

well put it this way dude, i had a dimarzio tonezone, and aside from a slight excess of bass i liked it alot, best pickup i'd ever tried.
I was hoping that maybe the nailbomb might be another A5 pup with similar output with more highs and less flabby bass.
the d sonic fixed the flab but added fizz and is a little too smooth... and lacks attitude to me.

just to talk about the warpig: how would it be in a les paul? would it be a good replacement for emg81/85? or will the miracleman be a better choice for that? just scanning for my new BKP for my new les paul... :roll:

i bought it for that reason
it brings out the opeth tone without a hitch
and then some!!!!!! turn up the gain and it can cut heads off.
it is not muddy AT ALL. if someone considers it muddy, it's his amp and tone perception.
i LOVE mine. go for it, you will not be disapointed

IMHO a warpig would be overkill as to me, Opeths tone doesnt seem overly bassy or saturated. I have only played a Warpig shortly through one of Tims marshalls but it sounded a bit dull and overly bassy to me (though to be fair the amp wasnt cranked).
Well, I can even get a good tone for Opeth using my Mule loaded LP - http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6018 :P

Ah well it was probably just the un-cranked amp then. I'd like to give a set of pigs another go through my Laney with some good crankage going on :twisted:
