Title: Pedals
Post by: samoth2 on November 09, 2006, 06:28:48 PM
Well, next monday my mom is going to the states, and then she will propably bring me a pedal.

But I don't know which one to get. Im looking for a distortion pedal.

My setup:
Ibanez S470 with Rebel yells and slowhand and a Roland Microcube.

Most important is a nice crunchy rhytm sound.

I listen to a digitech DF-7 online and it sounded nice and versitale (spelling?).

But i really liked the trash tone of the Boss MT-2.

Have some of you tried any of those?

Other suggestions are welcome.

Don't ever buy the Boss MT-2, it sucks, unless you are buying the Keeley modded MT-2. Don't know about the other one.

Thats what I heard everywhere else.. So I guess it's out of the picture..

The overdrive in my is nice enough but it just needs a bit more crunch when doing rhytm..

Which pedal could give it the extra it needs?

EH Metal Muff?

The MT-2 has its uses; I wouldn't say it's useless. It is used to great effect on a section of Change of Seasons by Dream Theater. That's just ONE SECTION, however. The rest of the tune is a wall of whatever amps he was using at the time.

If you're looking for a good distortion pedal and want to take advantage of the exchange rate, you might wanna look at distortion pedals by:

EH (as mentioned above)
Fulltone
HBE
Damage Control

I quite like my MT-2, but then I did get it for nothing.  It does seem like something you'd use occasionally, not as your main distortion pedal.

Enough, I know nothing about pedals.  I'll get me coat.

Sorry for all the options but I dont know what level of distortion you want.

I have the BB-2 and Guv'nor and they are great pedals. I should endorse marshall pedals  :P

Enjoy  ,

I would definately go for a keeley Modded pedal. Their TS-808/909 mods and various other overdrive mods are stunning, with huge variety too. They are by far the best out there in my opinion.

^but you must remember he got a microcube, it's not a tube amp so all OVERDRIVE pedals wont sound very good, so you got to choose from the distortion pedals

and more on the topic, I'm personally looking at the EH Metal Muff and it's awesome!

Thanks for all the suggestions.. I'll check 'em when I get the time  :D

Well, I read a review of the Metal Muff, and it wasn't so good for palm muting rhytm. So it propably won't be that one.. In the review they recommended a Pro Co Rat 2..

 Anybody tried one?

If she got a car and dont mind driving to long island, she can go here.  www.pedalgeek.com
Way better prices than the city and like 20 minutes away drive.  She can mapquest it.
Most pedals have sound clips.
Just call to make sure he got it in stock in the store.
He is also a BKP dealer, but his prices on those are a little high for some reason.
thanks

Yep the Guv'nor is kinda in between.

Can get the hard rock/ high energy blues sound (Jimmy Page for example) as well as the metal and shred tone(Satriani etc).

BTW If you want to get the guv'nor I would advise you get your mum to get it when she gets back and order it from  http://www.gak.co.uk because its about £40 including delivery (£33) without and from what I have seen on musiciansfriend and american things like that its about $69 which I am not sure if its with delivery but its about £50...

Up to you anyway.

I hope you enjoy whatever pedal you get and your mums expenditure is worth it

Enjoy  :),

But long island is a bit to far, she's going to texas..

HAHAHA, sorry about that.  I thought I saw NYC some place.
I had a long day at work :fouet:  Thank god its the weekend!!!!

I had a roland micro cube.  I recently gave it to my little cousin since she is trying to learn how to play guitar.
From what I remember, pedals did not really work that well for me with that amp.
I would buy another combo with at least a 10" instead of a pedal, but if you really like the micro cube, the best way for me was to leave it on the JC clean setting with the pedal in front of it.  The modded MT-2 was the best sounding through it for me.
You really cant get a floor rumbling palm mute with that little amp.
But like I said, if you really dont want another amp, the closets your gonna get for what you want in a modded mt-2.

thanks
chris

Well, I can't get her to buy me a new amp :P

So I'll settle for a pedal, and if it doesn't sound good I can just wait till I get a new amp before I use it.

So you decided on a pedal yet???

My Microcube is still at my house in Texas lol.

I bought a Boss GT-8 to mess with with the amp (but thats probably more than mum wants to spend).
On the GT-8, the best pedal (effects) that I found to go with the M'cube was the Rat and the Guvnor.
Just don't expect miracles from the lil guy, aint no way ya gonna get chest thumping palm mute riffage from it, but it sure can be fun trying

I used my money on the guitar :)

And I won't start working till April. But when I save up some money I was thinking about a Peavey JSX 212 combo..  8)

wow, i didn't know that about dream theater. I'd have figured if you had a wall of mesas behind you you'd use the mesas, but what do I know, lol. EDIT: i guess the tr00ch wanted a different tone or something.

Seconded on the pedals, in particular both the HBE big d (distortion, but can get into overdrive territory) and power screamer (overdrive but has quite a bit of gain so I suspect it'd work quite well even with a solid state amp).

But you have to ask yourself, do you want to run a £125-£150 (maybe a little less in the states) pedal into a £70 amp?

On the plus side, though, if you do get a pedal that good, you wouldn't be needing to change it once you got a new amp (unless by some unlikely coincidence it just plain didn't get along with your new amp).

I dunno, I suppose, you could make cases for either side of the argument.

Yeah the plan is to get a pedal I can keep..

I don't need a new amp at the moment, but when I will begin playing in a band and such I will of course have to get a new amp..

And if I don't tell my mom to buy me a pedal she will buy me something useless ;)

you're in the UK, right?

In that case, I'd think very carefully before buying a peavey. they're basically good value decent/budget USA-built amps in the United States, but once they come over here, by the sole reason that they're made in the USA, they seem to get elevated to "boutique" status, with price tags to match.

I'm not saying don't get a Peavey, if you try them (and everything else in a similar price range) and fall in love, by all means buy one. (Just make sure you try all the rivals, though)

But I know that in my opinion (and a few of the other guys around here) for virtually every amp in the Peavey line-up, there's a much better value, better sounding rival made in the UK or Europe. Cheaper and better, in other words. In my opinion, obviously.

Nope, good old Denmark :)

I haven't tried any amps or compared prices..

But when I come closer to amp-changing time I will consider every single amp I can find..

Minus MGs..

I'm guessing it'll be a similar thing in denmark to here as to the price of peaveys, but you never know...

I seem to remember (from other forums) that amp prices are a lot cheaper in germany than denmark, so if you're anywhere near the border you might want to consider shopping there (or maybe shop online at one of the big german shops, assuming you can get to try the amps near where you are first).
