Title: I'm actually buying an HSS set this time
Post by: genocidal tendencies on November 11, 2006, 12:14:36 PM
It'll definitely be two slowhands, probably either with a painkiller or a cold sweat. The guitar's a carvin bolt kit (hard tail strat with ebony fingerboard), finished in fake fur for whatever difference that'll make.

From the humbucker, I'm basically looking for power metal tones (if I can nail sonata arctica I'll be happy) with not too much versatility required, although a good split tone is fairly important. I'm leaning towards the painkiller, but will it split well?

Since I haven't wired it yet, or bought the electronics, I've got quite a few options. Would there be any real point in coil tapping the slowhands? I'm thinking of a push/push pot that would be similar to rolling off the volume. Obviously it wouldn't be quite the same, but how different would it be, and does the tone balance depend much on where they're tapped? Any other ideas I might not have thought of?

I just got a Nailbomb and Trilogy Suite HSS set.  The Trilogy Suites may match the Painkiller in output a bit better as I think the Painkiller is even louder than the Nailbomb.

Not sure what you want for coil tapping...

I'm pretty set on the slowhands to be honest, and I'm not too bothered if they don't match each other in output, I'm not intending to use them together much except when the PK is split. I'm not sure what I want from coil tapping either, just a thought. Thanks for your input.

Really?  The specs page implies that PK has marginally less output than the NB (though I doubt most of us could tell the  difference between 0.4k :)) - I don't have a PK yet though...

The Painkiller has a ceramic magnet and the Nailbomb has an Alnico V. Generally ceramics make a pickup a bit hotter all things being equal.

What would overwound slowhands sound like? Just thinking I could have them overwound to match the PK, and use a coil tap to go back to their standard 7k or whatever it is.

Another thought, since you can get purple and black zebras, would it be possible to get all 3 pickups in plain purple?

No cos a humbucker bobbin isn't the same as a single coil cover.

Well, no, but if someone out there makes one they might make the other. Although I suppose buying just two might not be particularly economical.
