Title: 16 ohm speaker 8 ohm amp - old story new question
Post by: Elliot on November 11, 2006, 07:54:47 PM
In know its ok to run a 8 ohm amp into a 16 ohm speaker - the general view being that you have 'significant inefficiency' - what does that mean in practical terms regarding tone and volume?  I'll be running a 30 watt  Session (Mosfet not valve) into a 100 watt speaker.

if that power is for a 8 ohms ratting you'll get something like half of it running into a 16 ohms box.

Yes it will work ok - but it wont be as loud as with a similar efficiency speaker of 8 ohm value
And dont be twempted to run her full tilt all the time to compensate
Pushing the amp too hard if you do

Cheers all - as I never put the volume beyond 3 (its only a mosfet practice amp and so doesn't have the 'valve like' response at loud volumes to justify winding it up) it should be ok.
