So, my GH50L arrived today, earlier than I was told (it was meant to be shipped tomorrow)!
Plugged it in, cranked it up. Wow. It sounds so perfect for crunchy ACDC style riffs :D Can see why Twinfan likes it. I was playing for about an hour or so on this setting, made me look over at my Fender in disgust  This thing sounds massive even with a 2x12! It even has great cleans when rolling down the guitar volume.
Now the gain boost was a bit disappointing. It sounds a bit fizzy. However I think this may be due to my speakers, the whole thing is really bright, even with presence and treble all the way off it can get a bit much. I think I'll get an EQ to tame the brightness a bit to compensate until I can afford a more "rounded off" speaker for the top part of my cab.
So the question - will a Danelectro 7 band eq work fine to tame the brightness a bit or should I go for something like one of the MXR 10 band?
Oh and a heres a pic -

:D

Mwahaha another GH50L user!!
It is awesome though. Haha it fits on to your 2x12...just!
Glad your pleased with it, how loud have you taken it?
-
All the way
I actually prefer the sound of the master at around 3 than on say 5-6 with my hotplate bringing it down to the same volume. I wouldnt get one if youre still thinking about it imho not worth it for this amp.
-
I like it around 3 too, i find it was at it's peak around there, not saying it is bad really loud, but it is generally better around there.
-
Yeah I thought so, it has the right amount of punch and clarity between 3 and 6 ish and is more than loud enough for anything. Do you find that the gain boost switch isnt that smooth?
Maybe its just my top speaker on my cab being bright..
-
Nice one matey - told you they were good ;)
What you're saying is an abundance of treble is actually a lot of clarity in the voicing of the amp. Even on low treble settings the tone is really clear, and with BKPs this becomes crystal. This is the type of tone I've had in my head for years, and I'd struggled with Marshalls to get it. Since discovering Laneys I won't go back! Marshalls give that warm, fuzzy tone (like a woolly jumper) whereas a Laney does the same thing clearer and harder (more like a leather jacket).
They sound good at low volumes (as you've discovered) and through a 4x12 when cranked they sound immense
I've got a Dano 7-band EQ and it'll be great for the fine tone shaping you're after. I'd run it out of the effects loop round the back rather than up front as you want to tweak to the preamp-ed tone before it goes to the power valves. This is also the way Slash does it ;)
-
Yeah, was planning to run it in the FX loop. For the best tone shaping, would you use the "side chain", "Slave" or "insert" option on the back?
And yeah, it is really clear even on low presence and treble settings.
-

I with presence & treble down low (which is what you are doing) i think it isn't very smooth, however if you turn them up a bit it definatley gets a lot smoother. That's what i think anyway.
-
I woulda thought itd be the opposite, as higher treble and presence (in my experience) make the sound more "spiky" and harsh :?
-
I think you need side chain mate. Slave is when you want to hook up multiple amps together and insert is when you just want to use the power amp section of the amp. Have fun playing!
I don't actually use the extra gain stage of my GH50L. I'm not a fan of too much pre-amp distortion as it makes things sound too fizzy (as Tom has found). Turning down treble/presence will much things up and make it sound more compressed. Increasing them will give the amp more bite and harshness.
-

Turning down the mids does it good too. I have no idea i'm just experimenting.
-
Ok cool, guess I should read through the manual to find out
The amp has to go back in its box for 2 weeks till my b'day now though :(
-
clean that guitar a bit =P
and i hate you. :D
i'm checking out an amp this weekend.. i hope it turns out ok.
-
haha yeah the guitar is a bit dusty, I'm far too lazy to clean it right now though.
What amp you going to check out?
-

Ouch!!
-
Yeah, not too bad though. Its worth waiting for :P I'm hoping with an EQ pedal in the FX loop I will be able to get a Van Halen-ish tone with some tweaking.
I actually got a great tone from setting the amp to a crunchy clean/overdrive kinda sound then used my Keeley rat for most of the gain (much MUCH better than it sounds with my Fender), so theres always the option of using something like a Crunch Box to get the Van Halen style tone if I cant get it from my strat and an eq!
-
That's the best way to use a GH50L - old skool ;)
-
A fun side note, I just got a laney VH100R, my post will be up bout it soon when I get a pic done. ITs a fukin monster.
I think we should make a BKP/Laney club, whos with me?
-
Me, if i had BKP's :(
-
ahhh, crazy joe, i feel bad now for having 7 bkp loaded guitars now. i share the love :)
-
\m/
told you the OD on the fender was cr@p...
-
haha yeah the guitar is a bit dusty, I'm far too lazy to clean it right now though.
What amp you going to check out?
aaah, wouldn't you like to know!
one hint though.. a famous shredder, loves the combo version.
i wish i could go for the gh50l, but at the rate the gear is moving out and money is coming in, i'll have it in 5 years.
enjoy it man. and if you want to sell it, i give you 100€ :D
-
told you the OD on the fender was cr@p...
Yeah, its not very good compared to this. It does sound ok into this 2x12 and using the Rat to boost the overdrive channel, but the Laney sounds so much better.
Just need a Dano EQ and I should be able to get a less fizzy tone from the gain boost. Gonna try putting the rat in the fx loop first tho as it is completely clean with the gain under 9 o clock so I could use the filter knob to try and take sound treble off.
-
ok, now shut up, so other people dont catch up, that laney amps RULE!
-
Heres a quick, very bad quality recording of the Laney (mic was clipping) but you can hear it does a great ACDC tone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeiIN7fD1G0
I'm thinking about trying some KT88s as the EL34s (as someone said in a different thread) are very agressive, not so good for a smoother, compressed kinda tone, but they sound great anyway :)
-
^ nice clip. It's very british-sounding, isn't it?
:D
-
Yep! Having a hard time getting the Van Halen and GnR type tones from it at the minute though as its so bright through my setup you cant really get it smooth enough for that kinda thing. Hopefully the EQ will sort that out, if not I'll be getting a new top speaker.
-
^ i'd have thought british sounding would have helped EVH and GNR, but then again, I'm only judging by the soundclips.
-
Yeah, it has the right voicing I guess, its just too aggressive at the minute :P Its weird though, all the other sound clips sound much smoother than mine, I guess its my speakers..
-
You might struggle to get GnR tones Tom. They're very Marshall-y with the fuzzy midrange that make Marshalls what they are. The Laney will always be clearer and have more distinct notes.
-
Ah, well as I've never played a real Marshall I dont really have a clue :P
I found this clip and whilst it is too high gain and bassy for me, it sounds much different to what I'm getting from it, and seems as though with less gain and bass it could get closer to the kinda harder rock tones I was hoping for (plus my LP will help) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwzwNknA-HA
-
dude i love that tone - it's a beast!
-
Which one, mine or the other video of a more metal tone?
-
That metal tone is superb. Is he really only using the amp for that? I'm going to try and dial that in tonight...
-
Yeah. I sent him a message to see what else he was using, he replied with:
"Im using the stock valves (4xEcc83 and 2xEL34). Then I got Framus 2x12 cab loaded with V30s ( http://www.thomann.de/thoiw3_artikel-179559.html ). That's the cheapest one I could find :P Then i got the settings like this: Resonance: off , Presence: 0 , Bass/mid/treble: 6 , pre gain/drive: 5 (and I'm not using any pedals in front of the cab). The sound depends a lot on your guitar. You need to have hot pickups in it. And of course you have to play a bit harder. I might be able to help you more if you send your settings to me (ampsettings, pedals you use, and the model of the guitar)"
Twinfan, let me know if you can get that kinda tone using either of your cabs!
-
I can get that type of tone pretty easy with my engl savage se. I'm using vintage 30's in my laney tt cab, so I'm guessing since he was using v30's too, they couldn't hurt...
-
Twinfan, let me know if you can get that kinda tone using either of your cabs!
My Marshall 2x12 has V30s so I should be able get pretty close. I'll try those settings tonight and let you know. Not sure which guitar to try it with as most of mine have low output pickups.
Ah - got it. I'll try it with my Jackson DKMG which has EMG HZs in it. Should be great for a metal tone
-
Try it with whichever guitar your Mule is in :P
As for speakers, I guess V30s would get me closer to the tone I want, but I thought they were more suited to metal, whereas I play classic rock, hard rock and cheesy 80s stuff :)
How about a V30 in the bottom of my cab (heard its quite bassy so would be good for the bottom) then a more rounded top speaker?
I heard fps_deans clips and his Classic Lead cab sounds perfect although I dont know the voicing of those speakers..
-
I'll try the Mule equipped GS-1 too then mate ;)
V30s don't just do metal. Angus uses them live and I wouldn't say he had a metal tone. They're also used by default in Orange cabs by the indie bands. I've used my 2x12 live with my Klipp head and it certainly doesn't sound woolly or metally!
I find that V30s need to be cranked to get the best out of them because at low volumes they don't move enough to let the higher frequencies come out so they sound bassy/middly.
-
from paul gilbert, to opeth and then some :D
that's the GH!
-
My Behringer EQ arrived today, it made so much difference! Higher gain tones are now much smoother and usable for me. I did some videos but the mic clipped loads :( Not sure if I really need to bother with new speakers now as the eq made it all sound like what I wanted :D
-
Told you ;)
Speakers are a part of the equation, obviously, but EQ on the amp or externally can make a big difference.
-
Yeah, I'll probably still try a different speaker some time if I find some good ones for cheap but for now I'm happy with the setup, amazing what difference a £15 EQ makes :D
Gotta try and resist taking the Laney back out of its box in the living room till the 27th now
I probably want the footswitch, but searching on ebay and google havent brought up any results for the FS-1. Any ideas which other single button footswitch will work for the footswitchable gain boost?
-
Any single button switch will work Tom. A Marshall one or Fender one for example, anything with the standard jack connector. Should be easy to get hold of.
-
Right - I've tried getting that tone out of my GH50L and I'm close but to be honest I'm no "nu-metal" player so there's no way I can get it!
Watching the YouTube video again it sounds like he's drop tuned to something, and the way he's playing chords suggests it not just a tone down at DGCFAD - maybe some kind of open tuning? I know nothing about those kind of things!
I tried his EQ settings with the Gain at 7 and the Drive at 5 and got a decent metal tone in standard tuning - pinched harmonics squeal like mad it sound great. That tone will sound pretty different when the amp's cranked though, it'll sound a lot cleaner as the notes get more defined.
-
Try it with whichever guitar your Mule is in :P

i wouldn't say they're only metal speakers. they're a bit like the engl of the speaker world- pretty versatile, but you're right, metal and hard rock is their main forte.
that being said, i got a similar tone to that with a brunetti xl-revo recently, and its cab was loaded with custom-voiced jensens (according to the spec sheet on their website, which is helpfully in italian only, so for once I have an excuse if I'm wrong... )- though of course, they could be rip-offs of v30's.
but yeah, that mid-range hump is quite characteristic of v30's... cornford is another amp that has a tone a bit like that (in my opinion), and they're loaded with v30's too.

i guess i should have read this first...
-
Cool :D I'll see how it goes when I'm properly "allowed" to play this amp so I have more time to tweak with the EQ and such. I was loving it earlier when I just rolled off the highs a bit though, perfect hard rock tone :)
For some reason I've always been under the assumption that V30s are really bassy and have a shrill top end, I suppose thats what I get for spending too much time on HC
Next on my list - decent mic and recording interface  its neverending.
-
Unholy TOM,please, record a Metal clip, or a hard rock clip with FULL distortion
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Q:p
jp
-
I cant for a while now till my birthday but I'll get you one then :P
-
thank´s Unholy Tom!

Nice amp Tom! :D Another satisfied Laney owner by the sounds of things too. You must feel relieved, I'm glad you got something your happy with dude! They piss over anything in their price range, esp' ones made nr' MK'! So you say the EQ really improved your tone, hmmm.. I'm going to have to have a go at one of these! I wanna KFK like Nicks to go with my Piggy Pimped Schecter! Not that my amp hasn't got the bottom end but this KFK thing sounds like it could start a war!
Are you having much luck with your band projects? I bet you can really have some after your folks let you have it back, 2 weeks isn't so long but it seems a bit silly to get you all fired up and take it back! My Mother did that to me with a pair of second hand roller skates! It seemed like torture!  They were death traps, one of my wheels fell off at this rink I went to and I was going so fast, when the axle dug into the floor and sent me flying through the air, I landed on my knees and burnt two holes into my 2-Tone strides, complete with a pair of symmetrical blisters!  So your you are safer with a guitar and amp any day of the week! Plus you can't beat a pair of Jeans and looking like a scumbag, like me back then!

hahaha I think something like that happened to me when dad bought me my first pair of rollerskates
As for the band projects, not really going anywhere as we still havent found a good (or even passable) singer for the cover band, and I cant seem to find any musicians into the same stuff as me to start up an original band, hence me saving for a mic to do it myself :P
Yeah EQ was really good for my tone although you have to be a bit careful with the sliders as if you go too extreme it makes the tone sound cr@p, I only really use it to tone down the high frequency and leave everything else on neutral.. TBH I cant see the KFK one being worth it as I got a Behringer EQ700 for £15 whereas the KFK is around £115. Sure its probably got true bypass and better components but if youre having it on all the time then bypass doesnt matter..

GET IT! they're awesome... i got one on Nicks recommendation too... you will defffiinately not be disappointed!

Oh I'm going to Sambo! I want this to be a SOAD OOOOMMMPPPFFF sound. I was going to get a Warpig a year ago but got side tracked by all the other beautys! Pig/KFK/Koch
-
 well it'll definately be OMFFF sound... i mean...... Koch, Pigs, KFK.... corr... thats gonna be madddd!
