Title: New Guitar- help me decide
Post by: DeanS on November 16, 2006, 04:39:42 PM
About time I bought another guitar- so I'm looking at second hand up to £800.00

 Do I go for:

1. Les Paul
2. PRS CE 22 or custom 22
3. Strat with humbuckers

decisions, decisions...............

oh and it will be retrofitted with a suitable set of BKP's

If you're looking for a second hand around that price, I would consider looking at an older Guild, if you can find one.  I got an S-100 from the US around a year ago and prefer it to to the Gibson SG.  If you're looking for a Les Paul type, then go for a second hand Bluesbird. :P

I'd personally go for a PRS or a Strat, leaning towards the strat, although I'd prefer HSS as its more versatile.

Middle pickups are underated I think-I'd never ditch mine.

custom built guitar from Legra (Bob Johnson on here) or Feline.

£800 can be the initial deposit, then you can save for another £200 or so for all the fancy woods you want :P

+1. I'd go for a MIJ les paul of your choice and then get BKPs of your choice for it. Depending on what les paul you get you'd probably have quite a lot of change left out of £800

it's not the sound which comes from them or anything, it's just the way that i strum, i always hit my pick on the middle pup and it flies out my hand, which drives me mad

Yeah, these for starters

I've also checked out Legra's website and there's a custom superstrat on there that was built for another BKP user-I'm now thinking about having one of those built or something similar- oh well there goes the budget!

Custom 22 all the way!  It's even got a wide/fat neck and moons (can't stand those bird inlays).

You've got me doing a bit of eBay voyeurism now to see how much it sells for.

and the gorgeous feel, fantastic construction, aswell as great sounds mean nothing to you? :P the birds seem pretty OTT and pretentious in my opinion.

Exactly!     I can do without the AAAAAAA(etc) maple tops as well.  Too much frickin' frippery.

In the unlikely event I ever buy a PRS, it'll be a nice plain mahogany Standard 22.

A short while back I had a PRS Custom 22 10 top with birds, and as nice as it was I sold it and bought a Gibson CS 346; I'll never sell the 346, I just have to figure out what BK's to put in it.

Without that I could never justify it to my beloved wife as at least she can think of it as a piece of furniture.

That's what they are, furniture guitars.

I had one of those Smartwood Exotic Les Pauls, but I always thought it looked more like a coffee table than a guitar.  Every time I saw it I'd get an irrestible urge to whip out a duster and a can of Mr Sheen.

IMO
if going for a PRS, the older ones are better.
But, if buying new (not thread I know) I would probably be more inclined to buy a Nick Huber  :P

Well, Im glad we had this little chat but I'll wait until my new years bonus and go for a custom superstrat from either Legra or Feline.
