Title: LP makes weird "warbling" noise on some frets
Post by: _tom_ on November 16, 2006, 07:54:24 PM
Its only really on the high E string, but I noticed it the other day when I was trying to learn the Beat It solo (its impossible  ). You can hear it unplugged but its more prominent when plugged in and with some gain on. Heres a recording of what I mean - http://download.yousendit.com/FBC65F2A44DC520D

Any ideas whats up? It does it on those notes plus 22nd and a few other places.

Cheers for any help.

Bizarre!  Sounds like something vibrating or loose.  Is your nut OK?  Is the top E tuner secure?  Is the string rattling on another fret?

(By the way Beat It IS impossible!  I'm working on Surfing With The Alien at the moment...)

Nut and tuners are fine, bridge is also fine.

Fret rattle then?  Is the action too low?  Strings touching a pickup?

Nope, the action is fine, and no strings are touching any pickups  :?

HAHA you'll never guess what, it was just the bloody string  Put a new one and everything was fine   Suppose I should try the obvious before posting!

What does it sound like clean when played in the same positions?

kinks in the string can be a major problem for fret buzz etc.. and a lot of people could benefit from changing there strings once a week.. but it's expensive lol.. i change mine as often as possible.

oh and the beat it solo isn't impossible just keep hacking at it dude.. the hard parts are the 9 tuplet tapping and the little nuances in the playing that only EVH really can do.. but getting the feel/essence of the solo is do-able.

Yeah, I just cant afford changing em all the time, I leave it for as long as possible  :P

I cant do the first tapping bit  I'll keep trying but its disheartening when you hear EVH do it so effortlessly!

Although today I did learn all of Runnin' with the Devil so at least I've accomplished something :P

What makes the "Beat It" solo such a bugger to play live is the fact that it was almost certainly a cut & paste job from Eddie performing his trick bag :) Then Jennifer Batten used to have to perform it nightly while wearing 6" heels and a gravity-defying wig :D
