Can Cu-base do it?
-
You cant take vocals out of a song unless you have each individual track from the original recording.
-
When I used to read Guitar Player (the US mag) back in the 80s they had an advert running for a device that was supposed to remove vocals from tracks (complete with a great picture of a cheesy singer who looked a little like bass player Jeff Berlin) .
I presume this worked on the principle that vocals are mixed in the centre and other instruments are to the left and right and by some kind of phase inversion/cancellation (or summat) you can remove whatever is common to both channels, i.e. the centre channel.
Of course the effectiveness of this will vary hugely depending on how the song has been mixed, and you're likely to end up with a song with no bass or drums either..
-
That's what i thought but macs are doing it on frequencies or something like that.
-
In theory it could be done but nobody has found a way to without messing up the sound of the rest of the track to my knowledge.

This is my understanding too.
i have a "black box" based on the Leuken Innovations Rhythm bandit which basically rewires the stereo mix to drop out the centre (some Hifis had this as a Karaoke feature
Works great on some stuff like Van halen and not so good on others
-
It would be pretty much impossible, sometimes it's hard enough for the human ear to tell whether a sound is a voice or not, to program a computer to do it would be a bugger of a task.
-
Providing the vocals have been mixed dead center of the stereo image then it is possible do scrub them out in a programe like Cubase. As others have already suggested, it's by using phase cancellation.
Import the track you want to use as a stereo file into Cubase (or your sequencer of chocie) and invert the phase of either channel. All instruments that have been panned off center should remain intact, but vocals and anything dead center will be scrubbed. It's not the most natural sounding way of doing it as you end up with the slightly hollowed out "kareokee" backing track effect, bit it's the only way I can think of doing it. I used the technique on a life recording of "Run to the Hills" a few years back when a mate wanted to record a pastiche vocal line. Worked pretty well if I recall...
Hope that helps mate

I have seen things advertised that maintain that they remove the vocals but I think they "work" by removing the frequencies most associated with the human voice from the centre ofthe mix-as has already been said. I have never tried but I would have thought that, as well as taking the vocal frequencies, it would also affect other instrumentation where it corresponds with te same frequencies. I think that there would be a market for a product that removed the vocals from certain singers come to think of it- Elaine Page springs to mind.

Judging by the look of her face, she could hear herself through the stage monitors- no wonder her hair looks a mess. Elaine love, it was painful for me too and yes I wanted to pull my hair out but not as much as I wanted to pull out yours. Nothing a steamroller couldn't fix. ...awaits bombardment from the fan of Ms Paige

My DJ friend was going on about these a while back:

Thanks for the tips fellas! :) My Tascam Guitar Trainer claims to this as well as taking guitar parts out.

Yeah who needs a vocal zapper when you can have a split-screen gramophone!!! Groovy baby.... 8)

Is it just me or has she got a bit of a MILF quality?
I wonder if she likes a bit of backdoor lovin', I bet she's a right dirty bint.
Most of the music college / theatre girls I've known are right goers...
Mmmm.... Mammaries...
all alone in the student halls,
I can smile at the old days,
I was beautiful then.
I remember the time I knew what happiness was,
Let the mammaries live again...
I'm gonna crack one off... excuse me..

^ Enjoy Dave! I used to shag older women all the time when I was in my 20's! I loved it and they would buy you beer all night!
Now then, with the music college girls, been there done that. All I can say on reflection is they talk a good shag but they are most definitely are not, well that one wasn't. She would come almost instantly and with that, had no real desire to continue using the lame excuse that her 'Vagina would contract after climaxing and it becomes uncomfortable'! Her terminology not mine. Which translates as; 'I'm a selfish egotistical super woman and you have been useful at this time'. To sum up they talk a good shag but are completly out of their depth with a well travelled working class scumbag like me! I've seen Borat and the fat producer has a less hairy arse than her's. It was like a grizzlys, my god talk about off putting. Thinking about it, it is now obvious to me that she is quite obviously a lesbian!
Compare that to the shag happy little $% pigs that you can pick up in London suberbs at any point on it's 360' orbit. They will $% your brains out all night and make you breakfast in the morning and let you have your space.

Talk about off topic!

^ that reminds me of a story...
An old friend of mine called Rich used to live with this militant Welsh bird - I mean this girl was hardcore, she used to freak out other guys and their girlfriends by saying C*nt all the time.
Well she would NEVER tidy her bikini line, (god forbid shave) and would DEMAND oral sex from my mate as her "right".
She also had a very musky smelling garden so to speak (Quote: "her pussy really kiffs")
The look on my mates face as he headed for home after a few drinks with the lads was like a man heading for the gallows..
Poor boy..
-
Hmmm.... I can see the connection but it wasn't quite that bad but she could have done with a more powerful pit fog! I like the scent of a woman! I shagged an Algerian/French bird with a super scent for few months back in the 90's. It turned me into a Lycanthorp! This has got to the point when I'm bound by my age to stop as I don't want Sambo's Mum complaining to Tim about the content of these pages. But then again Sambo's Mum might be.........

Well with me and you at the helm, just about as far as possible!
From Elaine Paige to Werewolfs in a few short posts! Mind you with Elaine's beaver it isn't hard to join the dots between the two subjects!

All my fault for mentioning the daffy bint.

A great thread though Mr 38th!

I have done this several times over the last 8 years for people who need a track without vocals.
I depends on what the arrangement is and then how it is mixed.
YES IT DOES work on phase reversal, you choose the amount and the width and the frequencies.
It will ALWAYS affect the sound of the track and other instruments which are in the middle of the stereo spectrum.
And re-eq'ing is needed.
IF the vocal has REVERB which nearly every vocal does then you can never remove all of the vocal because it will still exist in the form of reverb as reverb is nearly always stereo and so remains because it is not in the cancellation area.
If you want an example of a track which just would not work, I was asked to remove the vocal in EVANESSENCE's MY IMMORTAL, The track has got Just a quiet piano and very reverby vocal in the first verse, and then strings.
I removed as much of the vocal as I could but it was still there in the form of loud reverb and the piano being quiet in the fist place was very quiet and sounded wierd.
I could't use it at all.
There is no way of taking out the vocal propery and leaving the track as it is.
Unless of course you have the master multi track which goes without saying obviously.
Stefan Price.

I would re-record the whole track again, for all the effort it's worth! That's what they did in the old days! and I think it's still the best way to get amazing results, technology has its downsides.
Nothing can beat a perfect first take when recording.
