Hi,
As speakers seem to be the hot-topic at the moment, you guys may find this useful:
Andy Sneap on his forum did a speaker comparison with 3 different speaker cabs, 4 different speaker types and two different microphones each.
The cabs were hooked up to a 5150 mkII I believe and the guitar part was re-amped. So it's exactly the same guitar part and amp/amp settings on each clip (raw WAV clips, so no mp3 artifacts effecting the sound either), plus the cabs were close-miced in the same position. Oh, and this is definitely trying out these combinations for full-on metal guitar. \m/ ;)
The Cab/Speaker/Mic combinations covered are as follows:
Krank cab w/V30s speakers - Shure SM57 mic
Krank cab w/V30s speakers - Audix i5 mic
Krank cab w/Eminence speakers - Shure SM57 mic
Krank cab w/Eminence speakers - Audix i5 mic
Marshall cab w/25wt Greenbacks - Shure SM57 mic
Marshall cab w/25wt Greenbacks - Audix i5 mic
Marshall cab w/G12T-75 speakers - Shure SM57 mic
Marshall cab w/G12T-75 speakers - Audix i5 mic
Mesa-Boogie cab w/V30s speakers - Shure SM57 mic
Mesa-Boogie cab w/V30s speakers - Audix i5 mic

Interesting stuff. Wish I could get paid to mess around like this. ;)

Thanks for posting this :D
I didnt particularly like the tone in any of the clips but it was good for showing how the different speakers affect tone! The V30s sound nicest to me, maybe I do like their agressive mid-spike afterall! Didnt like the G12T-75s, but the Greenback sounded quite nice.
Any ideas what model of Eminence it was?

Not sure what the Eminence was, I can't find the original thread. :?
As to the tone. It's a very specific guitar tone he goes for that's moulded to fit in nicely with the drums/bass with that extreme metal kinda sound he produces (think Arch Enemy, Kreator, Killswitch Engage, etc.). So on it's own it doesn't sound that great. Mixed in with the rest of the instruments it just kinda works.
My favourite is the Krank w/V30s and the Audix i5 mic. Will have to get one of those mics I think for recording. :)

Yeah I thought the i5 sounded better aswell, doesnt seem to be loads more expensive than an SM57 either so I'll probably end up getting one of those for recording :)

Awesome, thanks! I'll check it out later as I have to go for dinner now!
EDIT: nice clips... i thought he was using way too much gain though, sounded fizzy and buzzy, you couldn't really tell much. Not you r fault, obviously, good find!

Cheers for that! V30s were my favourite (as I thought they might be) then the G12-75Ts. Didn't like the Greenbacks for that style of music. No ooomph to them.

honestly thought the V30's in the Boogie Cab with the SM57 were the best.. really big juicy bottom end and mids with just the right highs..
