Title: Who likes their English Muffin?
Post by: j_d_m_2006 on November 28, 2006, 12:11:01 AM
Well, I just purchased a Vox V847 wah and I'm looking at getting an overdrive/distortion pedal. I was looking at the TubeScreamer but I would rather not have to mod it and such. The RAT was another choice, more gain, but I hear a lot of praise and then a lot of garbage - and again no true bypass. At the moment, I'm looking at the EH English Muff'n and Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive. Do you guys recommend these pedals or any other distortion stomp box?

Had one for a lil while and hated it. But looking back on it now it was realy just a different sound from what I was looking for. If your into the whole overdriven Marshall Plexi thing then buy one. They realy do a good job of 'livening' up stale, solid-state amps too.

Hmmm, picking a distortion/overdrive pedal is turning into a big issue. Did the English Muff'n have a lot of 'fuzz' to it? I like a good gain/overdrive and tend to stray away from superfuzzy hairlike pedals. I am also looking at the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Overdrive, almost bought one today actually. So what's a favorite "distortion/gain" pedal that can tap into SabbathOzzy/Iron Maiden/Zeppelin/ACDC? What are you guys using?

Have a look at the MI Audio crunch box or the Zvex Box of rock.

I like the sound of the Fulltone OCD, but I've never tried one in the flesh...

The Muffin to my ears isn't really fuzz - in fact its not even an extreme distortion at full pelt.  It has a very open sound compared to the compressed sound of a tube screamer.

Having tried the Muffin in three amps (a Mosfet Session, a Vox Valvetronix and a Fender Blues Junior) I can say that it works very differently in different amps - in the Session it  warms up the sound a bit and adds dirt, in the Vox it acts like a plexi box and, strangely, in the Fender it remains relatively clean (which is perhaps an artefact of the Jensen C12N).

I like it, but tend to use it as a tube boost (keeping the gain on minimal levels) rather than a distortion/od pedal.

I'm picking up a Guyatone MM-X METAL MONSTER pedal tomorrow with spare Sovtek and Electro harmonix tubes so I can experiment with the sound.

I'm hoping to get a more authentic tube sound out of my Peavey Bandit 112 TransTube amp. I'll let you know how it goes.

The Muff will nail the early ACDC tone with the right pickups and it could prob do some Led Zep stuff too but It def doesnt have enough gain for Sabbath or Maiden. I have a DHA VT2 "Fatguts-Custom" which can realy get a good Sab tone if you tweak it and your guitar right. Id look into a Keeley or maybe even one of those Damage-Control pedals if you wanna have a lil more gain to play around with.

The sparkle drive wont do distortion, its an overdrive pedal. I have one and I love it, it makes it sparkle not distort though. Try the Z-Vex box of Rock or Some Keely modded rats or tube screamers, also, find a ReesaFratzitz by Emma. That is what you are looking for :)

Picked up my Guyatone MM-X Metal Monster pedal today. Just need to find the right power supply for it now - it doesn't take batteries and requires a 12v negative centre supply  :?

Can't wait to get it cranking once I can power it up

Pretty sweet there shakman, tell me how the pedal is once you get everything set up.

Many, too many choices for a gain pedal - good and bad :x . The ReesaFratzitz, Keeley RAT, and a few others look like what I'm looking for in a distortion pedal. In the meantime, I'll be getting a Sparkle Drive or Keeley TS-9 to play around with.:D
