Right im getting a agile al2500 (les paul copy)

that exact one to be specific for xmas from a friend i have in the states he says the pickups in them as standard are very weak for even classic rock so theyll definitely be no good to me but he says the build quality on the gutiars is on par and above in some cases with epiphones so what pups would you recommend for that guitar?

same sort of music obviously, Will most likely be tuned to D Standard

Well TO has a Riff Raff/Stormy Monday combo in his and it sounds pretty sweet. I would imagine that any combination of Riff Raff/Mule/Stormy Monday/Black Dog/VH2 would make that guitar come to life.
