My lead playings getting really boring as I nearly always stick to the basic pentatonic shapes/boxes and I go over the same tired licks all the time. So I'm looking for some good instructional DVD's (I've never enjoyed reading lessons on t'internet) which will hopefully get me out of the pentatonic boxes and make my playing more interesting and melodic. Would be good if they came with printed tab aswell so you dont have to load up the dvd if you forget any stuff on it :P Any ideas?
Whilst I'm making a thread I might aswell ask about guitar hangers. I want two, one that can hold my LP securely and one which sticks far out enough for an acoustic to hang flat with the wall.
Thanks

I heard Petrucci's dvd was quite good, though i remember you syaing Petrucci was boring so maybe not the thing for you
-
Yeah I'm not a fan of his playing really. I prefer more "rock" players such as Schenker (although thats probably because I've been listening to loads of UFO recently :P)
-
Petrucci's book is amazing (and am not a Dream Theater fan), but don't think the DVD is available in PAL, just NTSC. His lessons make ya quicker and better no matter the style IMO, although mine is shipping in transit with rest of gear from states right now.
-
Ah, well I'd be playing em on the laptop in my room, dunno if it will play NTSC. I'll have to find out..

AnyDVD from http://www.slysoft.com/en/ fixes that for ya.

Thanks Kilby, I'll download that :)
Oh and would the petrucci one be this -

Ah thanks. Mum has an Amazon account so if I ask nicely I'll get it for xmas :P
Do you have his DVD Dakine. Would you say its good for getting more melodic and getting outside the standard pentatonic boxes? I'm worried it may be too advanced for me, plus I'm not really interested in shredding.

I have Petrucci's DVD, in PAL format, I bought it in Virgin Megastores or something...

It's not rock but Larry Carlton's DVDs have some good ideas for slightly outside playing and for playing a melody based on the notes of the scales in the sequence you're playing etc, but as often happens on pro level instruction videos its great to watch but almost impossible to copy

Tom,
I don't have the DVD, I have his book. It's great for practice and exercises to get ya faster/more proficient with technique.
I whole heartedly suggest this though (although know you said DVD not book);

I have the Heavy Guitar Bible and Art of Playing.... (although both boxed and in transit right now :( ).
I think of this guy abit like Tim. He spent a HUGE amount of time thinking about these books and an approach to help/make ppl. understand (not some 'spoof' new learning idea though). He writes in 'laymans terms' and explains WHY, which due to my 'need to know' not just copy/learn and my engineering background is GREAT for me.
He explains WHY and also goes into pickup design, amp design etc., enough for a good grounding. Heck he even explains why strings vibrating as they do produce the sound they do. This is kind of a 'complete' book, not for newbies or pros. more a 'Bible' as it says that can be referenced again and again and is a great source of understanding/knowledge.Now, everyone is different so enjoys/assimulates information differently. So they may not be for you (btw, you can see reviews and 'look inside the books' on the amazon.com USA site) but for me, these are THE best books I have found thus far.

Thanks Nick. I'll probably go for the books if thats what you recommend. Apparently the Eric Johnson dvds are also pretty good.

Tom
everyone learns differently (as I said) but if you are at all 'curious' and not just wanting 'put this finger there, and this here and strum....' etc., but actually wanna KNOW why things work together, I DO recommend the Richard Daniels books. I am gonna get the last 2 , Blues and Lead myself I think (as my others are in a transit bow somewhere :( keeping me LP,Ovation,SG,speakers etc. etc. company).
-
Yeah that sounds good, I guess if you know how it all works then technically you should be "better", then again it could make you over-analyse everything  I'd ideally get some good lessons but I just cant afford it really.
About the guitar hangers, I was looking at Hercules Auto-Lock ones or whatever they call it. The string swings seem a bit dangerous as theres nothing to stop the guitar falling off if it gets nudged or something?
-
I just bought 3 Hercules (GSP39-WB) hangers (put them up yesterday in fact), and they seem very good. They have a spring-loaded systyem where when you lower the guitar onto them the front closes around the neck, and it's really easy to take guitars off them too. Lift the weight off the hanger and the front opens again. :)
Bought them here (need to get 1 more as now they're up I've found their fine for my acoustic too): http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~Hercules---GSP39-WB~ID~4268.asp

Oh, and for the instructional stuff it might be worth looking at the subscription at licklibrary.com
You get a few instructional videos for songs a month available for download (with mp3 backing tracks to play along with later), plus technique lessons for download as well.
As an example, this month the song tutorials where:
Whitesnake - Is This Love
Alice In Chains - Man In A Box
Green Day - Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)
All of the videos are selected from their main DVD releases, so you can always buy the DVD to get the rest of the songs if you like. Members also get a discount off the DVDs (up to 50%).

I highly recommend the following books :
Guthrie Govan : Creative Guitar Vols 1 & 2
and
Troy Stetina : Speed Mechanics For Lead Guitar.
My technique and lead playing has improved immensely since I got these.
Troy's covers all techniques and stuff.
Guthrie's books are great and in my case made me re-evaluate my playing and goals.
-
I'd say get yourself some theory books. This'll help you with expanding your playing. It got me into learning the harmonic minor scale and melodic minor, it really helped my playing alot.
Also,
Frank Gambale's Modes:No More Mystery DVD is also pretty good. Thought excuse his cheesy clothes.
some Paul Gilbert stuff is also pretty good.
