Title: PU suggestion for a (ephiphone) LP
Post by: demo on June 26, 2005, 03:11:04 AM
Ok, I've got a Epiphone heritage LP.

It is in fact, quite nice, but I feel the pickups are... a little weak. I can't get quite the full sound I want.

I'm musically mosty in the grunge era, and looking at suggestions..  a set of nailbombs looks right on the spot.

Any other suggestions?

Your going to want ALL the pickups eventually, but the players section will help you decide on the order you'll be purchasing them in. For grunge the Nailbomb sounds about right.

Nailbombs would be good although VHIIs would be good too-a little more open sounding but not quite so much gain.

A Mule could work. Most of the grunge players went for a PAF style pickup. Wich particular grunge sound are you thinking of? Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains?

Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots...

I'll probably be happy with any pickup from bareknuckle, but ... choices, choices...

By the way, I have listetened to the clips in the players section, but I'm not that good at identifying the contribution from the pickup vs amp/mic.

Maybe a product description could include some dry clips - so we could re-amp it ourself?

I'd say Nailbombs. Most of the bands you mention have that big sound.

I fitted a set of open cover nailbombs to a cutomers epiphone les paul recently, and i have never heard such a different before an after, it blew me away just how powerful and full they sounded. Didnt want to give him his guitar back!
As an aside, i think i fit more Bare Knuckles as after market replacement  pickups than any other brand now! It can only be a matter of time, this week the uk, next week the world, totoaly global domination is just around the corner!!

Another thing, how does the pu-cover influence the sound?

There's a thread about that somewhere. It changes the magnetic field. I always feel they have a more plucky attack to them. Makes it sound more vintage I think. It also acts as a shield against hum n' stuff.

In brief, a cover lowers the resonant peak of a p/up slightly. It has the effect of rounding the top end and warming the bass too.It also helps against RF.

They can be used as a great tonal shaping tool -controlling an overbright p/up  for instance.
