Hi everyone, first of all I'm new and this is my first post so nice to meet you all :D
I play a Gibson LP studio with BKP Nailbombs set  and I have a Fender HRD combo and use Keeley MT-2 with BOSS CS-2 thru the clean channle to get my gain sound. BUT,
I want a proper high(ish) gain amp so that I dont need to depend on the stomp boxes (I want to keep them effects-only). And since my band started gigging recently, i thought I'd get myself a stack. My budget is around 800 quid. I was looking at:
Marshall DSL50 + 1960AV
as above but TSL60/100
Laney GH50L + GS412 or TT412 (or with a marshall cab)
Laney VH100R + same
I'm kinda leaning towards the VH100R due to good reviews and when I heard it live at a local gig. But it's the most expensive of the lot and I'm not sure if i need 100 watts.
Are there people with experiences on the amps mentioned above? what are the advantages of each and if have you experienced any troubles?
Feel free to make any suggestions!
Thanks

If you dont really need a perfectly clean channel, I'd go for a GH50L. I got one and it sounds really good for any music. Can get kinda bluesy cleans when you roll back the guitars volume with the gain boost not engaged but if you want to switch from Fendery clean to brutal high gain I dont think it'll work very well for that.. If you do go for a Laney bare in mind they're really bright amps so they dont tend to work well with really bright speakers.
Oh and the other guitarist in the band I'm in uses a DSL50, even he agrees the Laney sounds loads better (which is funny as my head and cab cost less combined than his head did I think) :D
-
Greetings matey :D
First question - are you looking to buy new? If so, then you'll struggle to get a 1960AV or a TT412 as they've been discontinued. I was looking to swap my 1960A for one of those two cabs but ended up just swapping the speakers instead as I couldn't get one for a reasonable price.
I have a GH50L and (what's now) a 1960AV and it's a great combination. The GH50L is very bass and low mid heavy, and combined with the four V30s it gives a very thick sound. Think of a cross between Black Sabbath and Guns 'N' Roses and you're probably in the right ballpark. It's solid as a rock and I've had no problems with it at all, and neither did the previous owner.
The DSL50 gets good reviews and is a good Marshall by all accounts, but it will be more expensive than the GH50L. You do get two channels though (the GH50L is single channel) so it depends if you need the clean channel or not (I never use one).
Second question - how much versatility do you need? I wouldn't bother getting a dual or triple channel amp if you're only ever going to use one of them. Waste of time and money! How many tones do you need?
Final question - what size gigs are you playing? I play small to large pub gigs and 50w through a 4x12 is more than enough. At bigger venues than that you'd usually mic up to a PA so 100w is really not necessary these days. I would suggest sticking to 50w as they break up easier too and have a slightly sweteer tone than 100w. They're also cheaper to re-valve (2 EL34s rather than 4).
For a good all round setup that can cover a lot of bases I think a DSL50 and a 4x12 with your preferred speakers would be the way to go. If you don't need the clean channel, I'd get a GH50L.
-
heh that direct comparison with the DSL is very interesting... As you said, the DSL costs more so I'm guessing we're paying more for the badge then :(
GH50L does sound very good I know coz Opeth sabbath Paul Gilbert etc use em right? I like their tone a lot. But is it pretty much impossible to get a clean clean sound from the GH50L with it rolled to a high gain setting? Shame, because what I play does require clean sound. I'm using the Fender atm so I don't want too much of a drop in the clean tone quality.

How about the TT50H? Triple channel, 50w head?

Sorry, the title was probably misleading. I dont mind buying second hand, but preferably new coz i have had a few bad experiences, mainly thru ebay.
I dont really need three channel. But I do want two. A good clean and a good gain.
Didnt know that AV or TT were discontinued...shocking coz Vintage 30s rock!
-
how about using the fender for clean and the Laney for oveerdriven sounds?
-

Bit of a hassle for gigs. I lug two amp heads about and that's bad enough!
You might struggle to find the 1960AV and TT412A used as they don't crop up on eBay very often. I'm not sure who makes a decent priced 4x12 with V30s any more. You could always buy a 1960A (which crop up a lot) for around £200 and then swap the speakers. Selling the originals would then recoup some of the cost.
For the head, I would say try the TT50H and the DSL50 as they sound like just the thing you're after within your price range.
-

I suppose that's an option but it's such a trouble so I doubt i'd do that.
I like the idea of the TT50H twinfan. I've never heard it in flesh properly though (the reason why I say properly is because Dragonforce's tones are so ...well. bizarre). Does the TT have a lot of gain on its own?
-
Laney all the way.

No idea mate. It can't sound that different to a GH or VH though I wouldn't have thought? You could give Laney a call or drop them an email to ask?
-
i lack patience with companies that don't have clips. i realise clips can never really do equipment justice, but they should be there to give a vague idea of the sound. Another annoying thing is 'gibson' style clips - which are always of their guitars played through loads of different spacey effects, into an amp that just ain't a marshall. People want to hear the guitar, played through a standard production amp that people know, and not your pedalboard yu bloody fool.
[/Rant]
Sorry about that folks.

Laney pwns new marshalls
-
look for a llaney LH50R
it's what i got. two channel, GREAT cleans. AWESOME gain (very opeth like... you can get sabbath out of it any day of the week too, switch the pup to paralel, re-eq and you got gilbert sounds at your fingertips)
6L6 valves, so the cleans are close fenderish. realy nice, working EQ, so it's versatile in that respect.
only catch is, they are discontinued =/
i got mine for 390 euro NOS though, so it's not like they're ultra expencive.
-
how about using the fender for clean and the Laney for oveerdriven sounds?
i'd give that a +1.

GET A VH100  AMAZING!
The TT range has less bite than the VH ang GH range. Don't bother with a marshall, i have just upgraded a DSL 50 to a VH100, the difference sounds like £1000s, you wouldnt believe it.

hey thanks everyone for their input, so i'm getting the general impression that marshall :( laney... Are you lot endorsed by laney or summat lol.
Joe, how does the VH100R sound at 50-100 capacity venue kinda volume?
It's the only thing thats holding me back from that amp. I like all other aspects of it.
No other suggetions then? Like i said it doesnt have to be just those two makes as long as its in the same price range.
Thanks :)
-
Well you could always get a hotplate to tame the volume a bit whilst still retaining a good tone. I was just playing at bedroom level with my GH50L and it still sounded fine.
-
The only new Laney I've tried recently was a GH100 and it was an awesome head, especially at £450 new. The last Marshall I tried that I liked was a JCM900 SL-X (never got on with those DSL/TSL, JCM2000 etc ranges that came out post-JCM900).
If the Laney GH series had a dedicated clean channel I'd be looking at getting one myself. I probably only use a clean tone 10% of the time, but if I buy an amp I want to have that option.

I own the VH100R too. Even at low volumes the amp sound VERY good. Obviously turned up it sounds better, but at bedroom levels and band rehearsals it sounds THE shite.
-
Hey that's good to know. I'm not sure whether to wait for one to crop up on ebay or just get it new although that'd make it over my budget if I buy a decent cab.
I was just thinking about rack gear, like JMP-1 or V-twin with EL34 50/50 or similar. They're very expensive new but they often turn up on ebay for about 250 quid. Theyre expandable according to needs as well.
Any thoughts?

yeah. laney are good, no doubt, but are mainly good on a "bang for buck" basis. If you happen to have unlimited funds, I doubt you'd go laney. In my opinion.

they are the best bang for the buck IMO. great tone, one of the most organic overdriven sounds ever.
if i had unlimited funds, i'd buy two matamp LXs' to run em in stereo

you were still livin in texas ;)
all i say is
Laney, Laney uber ales!
untill you can afford a splawn.. or matamp
-
Good for you.
Pity to limit yourself when you have not heard all the choices out there though, from Rivera to Fuchs to Custom Audio etc. Still takes all sorts otherwise companies would go outta bussiness right
-
I have to say, I wanted to get a Matamp, Hiwatt or other beautifully expensive amp. HOWEVER, i played a laney GH100L and then the VH100R, I have to say, i prefered the laney to both the hiwatt and the matamp, they were the 100 watt custom classic and 1224 respectively.
I played the best of the best and i chose the laney
Oh, and it sounds great in a small venue to, just roll off the gain a bit if it squels when you're too close :)
GAIN!

i dont limit myself at all .. the others just dont float my boat as much as a splawn or matamp would.

Just wondered wether you had played em all to make such a decision is all.

Just wondered wether you had played em all to make such a decision is all.
i hear the splawn frequently, on bens clips and seeing he sold his rivera knucklehead to buy the splawn speaks volumes to me (he's also got a shiteload of amps to try out/play through frequently at rehersals, from diezels, over roccaforte etc etc), seeing we have pretty much the same taste in music, besides i value his opinion, as he's one of the people that knows WTF he's talking about. . and the matamps me and ben were checking out at the london guitar show ruled.
plus, the framus amps, peaveys .. what else did they have.. a fireball, were all in the shadow of the laney i got at home. IMO they sounded too artificial, now when i compare them.
maybe my ears are shot, maybe not.
i take laney over any other manufacturer, save splawn and matamp, over the rest any time of day.
-
I tried out the Matamp LX at Music Live and while it did sound good, I still prefer the Laney. The Matamp had a 'fizzy' quality to it which I didn't like.
I think the only other amp(s) I would consider instead of the Laney would be an old JCM800 with 6550's or a Mesa Mark IV. This is just going by experience of what i've played through in 9 years of playing guitar.
I would love to see what a Framus Dragon or Cobra can do though.
-
oh.. forgot the mark IV .. that amp rules.

Absolutely GOOD 4 YOU :)
Glad you know what you want and admire your dogged approach to choosing them.
I own a Rivera (seeing as you are having a sideways dig) but as you probably know Ben owned a Mk1 with 2 channels and no midi or reverb, however thats neither here nor there as the Rivera may not be my 'Be All and End All' last amp.
I applaud your choices as they are ALL good (NONE are the BEST however cos that is subjective) and my initial point WAS that Laney is amazing for the money. I did NOT bad mouth or put it down as I am more intelligent and polite than that, oh AND cos I know WTF I am talking about.
I generally applaud good music wherever it comes from no matter style or equipment and use my OWN ears and mind to come to that conclusion.

wow awesome clip, Davey! sounds like roughly the tone tone im looking for...
but do you think that you can take some time for me to try to get the Opeth distortion sound out of the Laney please? (Ghost Reveries or Blackwater Park era) with the Warpig, of course.
if you can try to get it and tell me the outcome, then i shall be verrry pleased!
thanks, Laurie
-
i can try.
-
thanks ever so much! before i get the Bareknuckle for my guitar, i need to get a suitable amp.
THANKS!
-
You need a Vox!
With £800 you can get an old second hand Vox AC30 no problem! for even cheaper around £500 you can get a BRAND NEW vox AC30 head amp, to connect to any cabinet u wish, and the tone is well.... its ballsy to say the least! It'll knock you out. The Vox VC30 is an outstanding amp for the money also
Is it just me or why has no one even mentioned Vox or Orange even for that matter.

I'm guessing the rivera, and engl he had before that, just didn't really suit th tone ben was after.
I play a lot of 80's metal-type stuff, and I know if that was all (or almost all) I played, I wouldn't pick an engl for it (haven't tried that exact rivera, so can't really say too much about that). I need a more modern sound too, and I still like my engl (though if I do say so, the engl I have is one of the best engls for the 80's metal tone).
That being said, I wouldn't turn down a splawn quick rod- I'm definitely after one, if I can get the cash together, and more importantly the guts, to order something I've only heard clips of!

Hey guys, getting back on-topic.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=011&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=320059476326&rd=1&rd=1
I know it's probably the wrong order in doing things but I bought this Laney cab brand new for £200 +20 postage I think that's pretty good (I hope). Now even if I buy the VH100R new it's still only 50 quid over budget. I'll probably take my guitar down to a shop this weekend and see which head I like the best out of GH50L, VH100R, DSL50 or watever is there.
I think music ground is the only place near me with any Laneys. Or Northern guitars if they have new bunch of second hand stocks in. Anyone from Leeds that knows a good music shop with Laneys??
-
Get the VH100R, it is amazing, Gus G and Dragonforce used it yesterday at the Astoria with Laney Cabs, it was an amazing sound!
-
............I'm still in the search for the right head.
I've tried a few and did more research and this is the summary of my findings so far.
Laney amps, according to Musicground, has reliability issues, so bad they stopped stocking them all together. Harmony central reviews don't really agree with this. Can someone with long experience with laneys tell me if there's any truth behind this??
Marshall DSL/TSL are just fizzboxes so no (although I could only try the combo versions).
Engl Thunder seems good, but with footswitch it'll cost as much as VH100R, which I will probably prefer coz I like their sound (from recordings).
so,
It looks like a laney after all, so it's between Gh50L and VH100R
I have a favour to ask you guys with GH50L heads. Could you record a clip so that you go from clean to distortion without touching the amp controls? You could do it either by using the gain switch on the amp or by using your guitar vol knob. The reason I ask is I have heard some clean clips and some gain clips, and theyre decent, but I havent heard someone switch from one to another. I heard that the gain switch adds way too much volume, so just wanted to know how much.
Thanks.
and Merry Christmas :D

Hi LazyNinja,
When I was last shopping for my Laneys, The main Leeds (Yorks) stockist was Scheerers music at the top end (outside) of the Merrion Centre. They had a guitar/drum section upstairs and a very accomodating Geordie called Steve who would get stuff in for you to try etc. I therefore hope the upstairs 'band' section still exists.
Regards,
FF.
-
Hi, thanks FF, but as far as I know, Scheerer's don't do proper electric guitars section anymore. Upstairs is drums only I think. they used to stock pretty good rare stuff like Maverick guitars but not anymore:(
what Laney do you have FF?
-
Hi LazyNinja,
I attach pictures of the LH50R - II head I have, and the Matamp 4x12 cab I use with it. The cab is loaded with Celestion GT 12- 75 speakers.
I also have a custom fitted flightcase for the Laney head, it is that precious ...
Shame about Scheerers eh ?
FF.

Can't go wrong with the GH50L....
or if you have the money, a Roccaforte DRRS or Custom 80 ;)

hmmm VH100R for sale, but he says the pots on the amp crackle when you twist them. Is this a sign of the amp being mistreated over its life?
I asked him about it and this is what he said:
>The amp had new valves about two years ago - I got them from Watford
>Valves. I can't remember which ones but they were pretty expensive
>and weren't the Sovtek ones that it came with....
>I got the amp direct from Laney themselves and have never had any
>problems with it. The first person that won it I put the saga in the
>listing. The second time I put it down as pick up only & it didn't
>reach the reserve doing it that way. I have now readvertised it with
>the postage option and a lower reserve but with the caveat that
>because they can get knocked in transit I can't be responsible for
>this as I don't want to have to go through the same rigmarole I went

suspicious or genuine? what do you reckon?

looks a bit suspicious to me... plus only 98.7% feedback out of 70 or so, which is high, but nothing compared to some i have seen.

hmmm VH100R for sale, but he says the pots on the amp crackle when you twist them.

I would say he's genuine but I wouldn't buy it if it's already started to have problems. I would only buy something that was faulty if I had tried it out beforehand.

Hey everyone, I'm new here but not to Bare Knuckle - using a couple of Warpigs in a Music Man Axis... very tasty indeed!
I am currently using a Laney GH50L and it has been fine as far as reliability goes apart from the stock tubes which died pretty quickly. However, having used Marshalls and played through Matamps / Orange amps I have to say that these amps generally do not 'feel' very sturdy.
I had the VH100R for a while but it became too expensive to maintain (6xEL34!) so I opted for the simpler, 50watt GH. They both sound great but if you're going for a Laney I'd go for the GH50/100. You have to crank them up high to get a decent tone so not bedroom amps by any means, but I don't think they'd stand up to heavy gigging unless you invest in some high-quality protection (not always an option for us muso's!).
I've actually always hoped that Laney would make their amps slightly more expensive so the quality would go up. People are more than willing to fork out for decent equipment and the 'sound' of the Laney amps is right up there with any Marshall (unless you're going for a specific 'Marshall' tone, that is).
I used the GH50 (among others) when recording with my band, you can here some of the recording here: http://www.myspace.com/cambian0dawn

NICE CRUSHING TONE!!!! all the more reason for me to find a GH50L 8)
which tubes do you use, EL34s or 6L6s?
EDIT: thats a damn awesome band you are in! my type of metal :)

6? I think its 4 not 6 output tubes. Anyways Im getting the VH100R for sure now the Orange Rocker 30 I'm trying out as a stop gap is pretty weak imo so I'm gonna go get it swapped for the VH100R.
The orange is too indie, too warm, dark and the gain is fuzzy if you turn it past 2 oclock and b4 that not enough, also NOWHERE NEAR as responsive as the old marshall I had briefly last week (that sounded great). Clean sound cant touch my Fender either. Really dont know what all the fuss is about with the orange. It does good Arctic monkeys and QOTSA impression tho I guess thats the kind of sound theyre meant for. My plan of cranking it and sticking an OD didnt work. Anyways thats just my preference it just didnt click with me, might have been the guitar tho. Sounds a bit beter with my strat. EDIT: (I found that orange works better for playing leads but hates power chords. Sounds great for classic rock leads but its not what Im after, besides laney wil do that well anyway)
ALSO
Im getting a Genz Benz El Diablo with G flex 2x12 this week too!!! I really couldnt afford it but it was such a good price I had to get it
Fun week ahead!!
I think I'm getting rid of the Laney 4x12 if the G FLEX is as good as they say, or if I want to eat food this week!
