Title: Painkillers too bright in maple/alder??
Post by: mike on December 16, 2006, 06:14:29 PM
I got a Jackson USA King V on order.  it comes loaded with dual Seymour JB's -> not my favorite pickup!  no balls or aggression, so I'm thinking of a calibrated Painkiller set!  good idea or nay?  aren't the Painkillers designed for mahogany?  would they be harsh bright in a maple neck-thru/alder wings guitar?  would I still get good bass chunk?

I play metal.........everything from Priest, King Diamond, Megadeth, Annihilator, Slayer, etc.  My amp is a Peavey 5150 combo that I've had retubed, rebiased, and modded up the arse.

Many thanks, Mike \m/

Well i use a Painkiller in a Swamp Ash bodied guitar. Swamp Ash is quite bright, like Maple. To round the highs a bit order a Painkiller with a Pickup cover.

No, it will not be too bright. JBs are terrible. Get the Painkillers and have a blast!

HOLY DIVER!!

It's a monster[/b] in neck-thru Jacksons  - I was absolutely amazed by the huge difference in sound when I took out the JB/Jazz combo that was in my RR1T & put in a Holy Diver set.

OK, I know this wasn't what you were asking, but no Pickups thread is complete without someone diving (sic) in with a totally different pickup suggestion to the one being asked about :)

Then again, you have the Nailbomb. Which is great for thrash. But its entirely off-topic.
