Title: "Custard Pie" solo tone
Post by: cjpmmd on December 20, 2006, 05:11:28 PM
Hoping for some help here.  I've tried various combinations of wah, distortion, phasing, etc. over the years but I just can't seem to nail the tone of this solo.  I sometimes get  frustratingly close, but just can't get it to sound as vocal and chunky as JP does on the album.  I'll be grateful for any and all suggestions.  I'm trying to avoid Eric-Johnson level tone obsession here, but I just want closer to the album sound.  Thanks in advance for the assistance!

He definitley used an Electro Harmonix small Stone for the phaser on it! Check out the small stone pedal. That's all I know about the sound. Hope is helps.

Here is a link to the site, just copy and paste it into your browser:

I always thought the tone in that song was an EH Flanger with the filter matrix switched in so that you get that 'notched' tone.  my EH Flanger sounds EXACTLY like the Custard Pie tone - otoh, my Small Stone sounds NOTHING like it (both are vintage pedals not reissues)

ok didnt know that. so he used a flanger instead of a phazer. I wouldnt be surprised if he used a chorus, flange and phazer all together, to create a unique sound, maybe thats why its so hard to recreate?

Who knows?

I don't know if he actually used a Flanger, but the timing of when those EH Flangers came out would be about right for when they recorded Physical Graffiti.

In addition to the Flanger, it sounds like the solo tone is his LP in the middle position.  One of his LP's had all manner of series/parrallel and phase switches so it's tough to say how he had it setup on that solo.
