hi all
this is a thread where you can post what you use to get your distortion, e.g. a stompbox or your amps built in distortion or whatever you use!
this isn't just for my interest, it gives everyone an idea of what is good out there.
feel free to comment on your distortion e.g. thick, heavy, warm etc.
thanks

My preferences changed today. I now plug into the Hi Input of my Laney VH100R without the boost on but with the gain turned to 10, bass and mids on 9, treble off with the presence on 6.5. For a solo boost I use my Keeley Modded TS9-DX.
That's for when playing stuff like Dream Theater and Megadeth.
For more modern stuff:
Plug into the Lo Input with the boost on 3 with the TS9-dx set to a clean boost with some mids taken out. Sounds very close to an ENGL Savage tone.
But today I've been playing about even more and i've been plugging into the Hi input of my Laney with the boost on and turning the volume control of my PRS turned to 7.5 for rhythms and then for a solo boost I wack it right up. It's alot more easier without having to worry about stepping on things. I may be getting more mature with how I get my tones :D

Lead channel of my Mesa Rect-o-Verb head on the "Modern" voicing.
Hear it (along with the BKP Holy Diver) here (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6461) here (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6463) or here (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6460) :)

Laney GH50L, quality distortion for heavy metal very british sounding.
-
I have a valve driven distorion box. It sounds great.
-
Haha, erm... Boss HM-2 with the bass on 2 o'clock and the treb on 10 o'clock, distortion all the way up. Into the VOX AC15VT on the 'bassman' pre-set setting.
It's a very old school metal, fizzy distortion. So 80's metal i think i've just had a trip in a delorian.
Hopefully soon i'll be building my own bassman, which should sound awesome :)
I can also turn the distortion on the pedal right down, and turn the gain up on the amp a bit and get a nice blues lead sound...

Laney Klipp head, using the Klipp channel distortion. This is for YC/DC gigging.
For home use I also use the clean channel of the Klipp (or an Epiphone Valve Junior) with a bunch of pedals depending on what tone I want to get:
Marshall Drive Master
Boss PW-2 Power Driver
Marshall BB-2 Blues Breaker
Maxon OD-9
I'm currently building a Fuzz pedal, should be getting a DIY Treble Booster in a couple of weeks and "Heavier Than Hell" is currently building me a Mosfet Booster :D

GUITAR > SPLAWN QUICK ROD
-
HBE Big D - on the fuzz setting - very Led Zep
HBE Powerscreamer - gain at 12'o'clock
EH English Muff'n for full on grind - it works with with my Fender BJ but, strangely not with anything else.
-
Using the distortion from my H&K Access Preamp occasionally using my Marshall Guv'nor II as a boost when using tube 1.
-
Hughes & Kettner Tube Factor. Everything from clean with a little dirt to metal high gain. It has a very good old school Marshall vibe.
-
BKP Loaded Guitar > Lead > Rivera/Mesa
-
guitar (Nailbomb & JE-1000 booster) -> Peavey Rockmaster
I like it a bit mid-heavy, a really grinding tone, tight bass and sharp highs. The leads just sing and riffs cut through. Ideal for a 2-guitar band.
-
BKPs > ENGL/Marshall
And, EQ in the FX loop to shape and push the power tubes with the level, and run the amps at low gain setttings.

I use a Keeley Fuzz Head for my distortion needs. It's a very warm and musical sounding pedal, and what I like most is that I can change it's tone from smooth to harsh, as well as BEEF to just a normal overdrive with the fuzz knob. It's an excellent pedal, I love it to bits. I got it for the sheer amount of versitility it can offer. It even has an internal gain that you can adjust so it can be very light or very heavy.

here's a special website with a huge wealth of Fuzz Head clips.
ENJOY

I just use a cranked up Old Marshall into a Hot Plate so that i don't deafen myself (any further! )
-
danelectro wasabi rock-a-bye at 10
Indie IT-70 at 10 (DRIVE)
Amp 'Drive' button on
Mids trimmed Bass boosted and Trebles wherever, but not too far from 5
for anything special i can use the 'Attack' button.
-
At the moment its my guitar into a spider 3 red metal channel
but hopefully going to be a engl powerball soon

My first and only such pedal was a Colorsound SuperTonebender that I bought in, ahemmm, the "70s"...it's still in the attic somewhere!
Live I only ever now use the amp's valves: Engl Sovereign Vintage112 100W; recording-wise, the only distortion "model" I use is one based on a Tube Screamer(er, TS7 I think??)
-
Apache loaded strat --> Rivera R55
My main crunch rhythm sound is the dirty channel on the Rivera. My main lead sound is the gain boost applied to that same channel. I also use an Electro-Harmonix LPB-1 booster pedal occasionally, both on clean and dirty rhythm tones, just to give it a bit of a kick.
-
amp's distortion..
-
Distortion pedal schmistortion pedal.
I use my JCM900's gain, on channel A it's set to about 3/4 to keep it clean and then on the lead channel it's about 8/10 (keeping in mind the lead channel is rated 0-20 so in actually it's like using a rating of around 4/5).
EQ: Barely any bass (4), lots of mids (9), bit of treble and presence (5-6 each)
Don't use any external pedals for my dirt although I have just ordered a custom fuzz pedal from Skreddy.

Does anyone use an MXR Distortion+? I'm curious to know what it's like as I sometimes hears that it's fuzz like, and other times it's a smooth distortion, also Steve Vai used it on the Crossroads soundtrack and I really his tone on that!

Well, I used to have one (one of the very originals when they first came out) that someone 'borrowed' and never returned. I used to use it a lot in conjunction with a slightly overdriven Marshall and gave that sort of smooth and yet crispy tone a la Randy Rhoads.
-
I used to have one, the sound is very good - just by maxing the output and turning the distortion knob you can get a great range from a smooth mild overdrive (over to the left), a nice biting distortion (in the middle) and a really grainy fuzz (way over to the right).
The only reason I sold mine was simply because the unity gain level was way high, ie, when I had my amp cranked and turned it on - there was a very noticeable volume drop and this pisses me off no end.
-
My simple setup: A Marshall JCM 900 SL-X plugged straight in.
My high end setup: Soldano Supercharger -> Marshall Major.

if you fancy digging that pedal out of the attic I'd be interesting in buying it - I LOVE old fuzz pedals.

Wayaye! Funny, I had a feeling the TB would attract a head(and it is a Colorsound as opposed to the earlier Solasound). For the mo, am still leaving it to, er, "mature"; it's been a in a succession of bedrooms for a number of decades and somehow "turned up" here. Like its owner, it's been passed over, shagged out, stomped on and still says Come Back and Fight You B'stard; thanks muchly for the interest though.
(Don't know why, but after this thread I suddenly itch for that Dumble mod pedal...)
