Title: Forgotten Guitar Heros
Post by: Afghan Dave on January 05, 2007, 03:38:35 AM
I thought it was about time to pay tribute to the ones that slipped through the net.

The great guitarists that never got their due.

Hopefully this will serve as a catalyst for all of the young guitar heroes of tomorrow who read this to check them out....  (What a waste if they don't and if they do, what a great guarantee that I'll have something to listen to in future).

I'll put two names in play:

1) Jake E Lee

2) Jeff Tyson (T-Ride)

Over to you... :D

Frank Zappa doesn't get nearly enough appreciation as a guitarist.

Tony McFee - Groundhogs.   Went to see them a few years back and that guy can really strangle an axe.

+1 for Roy Buchanan; almighty impact on lead guitar style.
Alan Murphy without a doubt: lyrical, fluid, brilliant; played with Go West, Kate Bush, Level42, et al; listening to him gave my playing a real new life; died of HIV/AIDS a few years ago, sadly lamented.

The guitarists in Thin Lizzy were pretty good players, the fact that I dont even know their names shows that they are indeed forgotten

What about Izzy Stradlin? His solo stuff is really good. I daresay I prefer it to anything Slash put out after GnR.

Am I the only one that thinks this thread should be...empty? I mean, if you can type the name, they arent forgotten?

Anyway, enough with the nit-picking, my choices of little-remembered guitarists:

Son House
Brian Tatler (diamond head)

And of course, Mashed Potato Johnson.

Craig Goldie - it was a big ask filling the shoes of Vinnie Campbell, but his work on the "Dream Evil" album & tour more than managed it IMO...

How about Dave Murray?  I don't often hear him mentioned as a bona fide guitar hero yet he has a style & voice that are all his own - or has he received too much recognition to be considered to have "slipped through the net"?

Damn right Muttley! Thanks for updating me on the new band - I've taken a listen and there is NOTHING that gives a hint as to his guitar chops... :?

That guy was(is) such a guitar monster but you wouldn't know it. He blew Nuno out of the water but never got the recognition during the same period.

Oh well...

Ace Frehley (KISS) - responsible for making more American kids want to play the guitar in the 1970s than almost any other player

He has a pretty cool vibrato, and whilst a lot of the stuff seems easy & simple  - it takes a lot of trying to get the feel he had (even if it was accidental)

Yep. +1 on Ace, as you say it was simple stuff, but had a great vibe.

Stan Webb - Chicken Shack, used to be ranked up there with Clapton, Green, Page and Beck.  He also has a great voice
Walter Trout - His stuff with John Mayall and his solo albums show how rocky blues should be played on a strat
Mick Box - listen to early Uriah Heep to hear some really nice rock guitar playing
Martin Barre - electric folk at its best!!
Andy Powell, Ted Turner, Laurie Wisefield - Wishbone Ash were one of the first melodic twin guitar bands
Leslie West - great P-90 tones when he was with Mountain

I was at BB Kings in NYC in October to see Robin Trower.  It was a sell out, so he is not forgotten in New York!

Major +1 for Waddy Wachtel.  One of the most awesome technique/tone/hair combinations prior to Tim.  How' bout a few plaudits also for:

Son Seals --- great Chicago blues
Stan Whittaker --- 70's progrock with Happy The Man
Bill Nelson --- still have my white vinyl copy of "Live In The Air Age"
Denny Dias --- astounding Steely Dan solos like "Do It Again" & "Reelin' In The Years"
David "Rock" Feinstein --- American-style NWOBHM with The Rods
Jeff Martin --- late of The Tea Party
Warner Hodges --- smokin' with Jason & The Scorchers

cjpm (I've decided to skip the whole "recognition" stage of musicianship and proceed straight to the "forgotten" bin.)   :)

A couple I can think of:

Jeff Martin - Tea Party

I really like two other albums Campbell played on - Riverdogs and Lou Gramm's Shadow King.

He's always seemed like a reluctant guitar hero - I think he'd like to be known as a writer and "team player", but what he does best is just play guitar!

Lou Gramm's Shadow King.

SHWING!  I thought that this album kicked serious butt, despite my not being a huge Vivian Campbell fan beforehand.

That reminds me, another often-overlooked guitarist is Pat Thrall --- a real monster player!  Just like the Shadow King album, the Hughes/Thrall album is quite underappreciated today.

Oh yes!  In fact, I think I'll dig Hughes/Thrall out and listen to it now.  And that, of course, brings us back to the Pat Travers Band.  Although I don't think the two Pats were the best of friends, and the albums didn't generate quite the fireworks they should've.

These threads are great - they bring back so many memories!

WOW that sounds really good - as people say, its a tad bit bassier and more compressed than the original, but I don't see that as a criticism - you really nail the whole Angus sensibility in the tone.  Great pickups and great playing.

How about some more, coz that was smokin'  :D

Not really forgotten, but George Thorogood is really underrated. He's one of my favorites.

Just thought of another unsung (or at least undersung) hero --- Terje Rypdal.  He was actually one of the first guys to make me want to pick up a guitar!  He's one of those musicians that I can only dream about being 1/77th as good as by the time I'm 100 or so.   :harp:
