Title: Good Quality Cables???
Post by: JamesHealey on January 05, 2007, 08:50:58 AM
I just got some top notch speaker wire, and wired it up to my denon hifi system just to see if it made a difference..

it's gone from being a stupidly bass heavy muddy sounding stereo into this crunch midrange and high end reproducing BEAST! i can hear things in tracks i could never hear before.

It really makes a difference. On speaker cables, yes, but even more so on guitar cables as there are very low voltages running through there.

My experience with instrument cables:
Overrated: Monster
Ok but bright: George L
Good value for money: Spirit Cables (can get at Thomann)
Awesome quality but pricey: VOVOX (can get at Thomann)

I'm currently using Canare cables with Neutrik jacks which are great and also George L cables with solderless jacks for my effect pedals.  Even better than these include these high end cables:

Van Den Hul
Sommer Stratos
Tara Labs
Zaolla
EA Lyric
Cardas Audio

"Top notch" is a very relative term, lol. I've seen the top notch, have it wired in my shop ... it costs as much as a car!

Glad you have stepped out of the medicocre, though! Cables DO make a difference, though they are the icing on the cake: $$ spent on a good source, components, and speakers should come first.

I'm currently using these cables:  http://www.award-session.com/award-session_cables.html

They sound great and the auto cut off Neutrik jacks are great and very useful live :)

+1

I haven't used the crazy high-end stuff, but the Award cables are great quality without any danger of rupturing your wallet.

I use the generic cables that are avaliable at my local music dealer. I have a Monster but I can't really tell a difference. My main question though is what do I use between my amp and cab in a half-stack? Having never had one before I'm a little worried because I don't want to mess anything up. I always just assumed it was regular guitar cables.

Oh, yeah. There will be a little bit of SPLAWNAGE content in the next few weeks   . It's arriving soon!

NO! For God's sake don't use a guitar cable to link a head to a cab. You need 14 or 16 gauge speaker cable. I've heard that there is virtually no difference between cheap and expensive stuff (unlike guitar cables), but it is worth checking the soldering on the jacks at each end to make sure there's a good connection. If you run most heads with a dead cable, it's the same as running with no cab attached. Result - a broken amp.

I thought so.....xD. I went out and bought a 6ft 16GA cable anyways before I posted. Thank you though, I wouldn't want to break a brand new Splawn anyways.
