Got my new Laney yesterday... I'm still trying to figure it out, but i got some nice clean and OD sounds out of it in the half hour i got to play with it. Does anyone fancy giving me a head start with some good, modern distortion settings?
Thanks all!

Right, try this and see what you think - it's top of my head stuff in relation to what I use on my JCM900... but:
(Working on the old o'clock method)
Bass: 11 o'clock
Middle: 5 o'clock
Treble: 1 o'clock
Presence:3 o'clock
Gain:12 o'clock
Go from there and see how it sounds, obviously it depends heavily on the sort of guitar/pickups you're using but for me, this works a treat. My main guitar is a Fernandes Ravelle with a Seymour Duncan JB in the middle - a pickup with his the EQ slid up in favour of the high end while I prefer the mids myself. GUITAR IS ALL ABOUT THE MIDS!! So, lower the treble a bit, drop the bass and crank those mids!
Give it a whirl and see what you think. It might rock, it might suck.

those settings sound good, and i agree that mids are needed to have a good sound...
BUT 5 oclock is overdoing it in my opinion. 12 oclock should be enough, maybe 13. it sounds more modern with less, but just whatever you do DONT SCOOP THE HELL OUT OF THEM or your sound will be weak and thin.
-
Yeh I never scoop my mids... i think it's a terrible sound, no balls to it. Thanks for the settings, I'll try them. But I've come to the conclusion that it aint gonna lose the "fizz" it has til i actually get it up past, well, 1! That's what iv been reading anyway.
There's someone on here with a VH100R... Can't recall their username...

yeh, ill find them for you...

I'm guessing the VH100R is similar to the GH50L.. you have to get the master above 2 before it thickens out and loses that fizz (like most valve amps really). You need to get the speakers working as well otherwise it sounds cr@p no matter how much you have the power amp working (IE hotplate on lowest setting with master right up). I'd recommend a hotplate though so long as you dont overdo it, it works really well.
-
all this talk of laneys is making me jealous.
the GH50L users can help you as the basic settings are the same, and also take toms advice about the hotplate, everyone uses them.

Here's my settings
Presence 6
Treble 0
Mids 10
Bass 9

I'll be joining the list of proud VH100R owners hopefully.
just out of interest, how much did everyone pay for theirs?
-
I paid £589 for mine at Wembley Guitar Centre. I had to carry the thing all the way home on the bus and train!

Are those o'clocks or ratings out of 10?
-
well, you cant get 0 oclock so i would say they out of 10.
-
Yeah out of 10 mate.
-
Mids on 10 = killer. 8)

HELLO! Nobody panic, i'm here to, back from the first day of recording with my VH100R. YES!
OMG, the distortion, OMG! its just madness that tone that comes out of this beast - anywhoo, settings out of 10
Presence - 4
Treble - 4
Mids - 5/6 (i think)
Bass - 7
Gain - 10
Extra Gain - 8
I think thats what i use anyway, thats with a strat anywhoo. I will post some clips when we have finished recording, and for the record, Apaches and Yardbirds do evil metal tones, especially tuned to A#, OH YEAH!

Oh yer, I paid £500 for my head, and I don't use a hotplate, even live. Most venues can just about handle the volume of this amp anyway. Damn i love this amp

I haven't dared turn it up to 2 yet! I think I need a hotplate, gotta try get on on ebay. Thanks for all the settings guys! Also, Joe, do you use Hi or Low input? You're supposed to use Lo if you have "single coil or low output humbucking" pups, but I dunno whether the Gibson 498T is hi or lo output... have been using Lo cos it reduces the fizz!
-
I use low for low volume playing, lets you have the master up slightly more which is always good (I dont have a hotplate at the minute).
Anyway, got to crank my GH50L today, getting the most perfect beefed up ACDC levels of crunch and when you roll back the guitars volume to get that clean-yet-dirty sound its so good for blues :D My settings are:
Presence-3.5
Bass-2
Mids-Just above 8
Treble-off
Master-2 (bloody loud through my cab and sounds great!)
Gain-10
then if I want a slightly more hard rock/metal sound I have the extra gain stage engaged, on 4 or 5 usually
BTW what overdrive is everyone using with their Laney? I'm looking for something to slightly compress the sound, make it smoother, tighter and slightly more saturation (been listening to a lot of Pagans Mind recently and want that compressed smooth sound!)
-
Tom, i'm using the Keeley modded Ts9-dx. It's an amazing pedal with alot of sounda and it's very versatile. though it is a tad exspenive. sorry if my spelling is cr@pping but ive been drinking heavbily tonight due to some bad problems.
-
I use the low input, sounds awesome. I will let you know when I get some new clips up from the latest recording. Nice

Just had a brainwave reading the VH100R manual :!: ;
what if, you EQ 50% of the signal and insert it into the power stage?
Since doing it this way won't actually mix the two signals together, could it sound like two guitars playing the same thing? Like, if you set your amp to be cutting and then set your EQ for a chuggy sound? Hmmmm any of the owners care to try it out?
-
hey guys, i just got a ts-9 for my laney vh100r and man i'm in a bind.
i want to get some stevie ray vaughan tones out of it. ya' know how he has a little bit of fuzz and then stomps of the ts-9 to take it..well that jump over the cliff like nigel haha.
anyhow, i'm running a laney double HH loaded cab on mono. at 4 ohms.
i like that better than running stereo.
and i just wanted to know what settings i should use.
any help would be great and much appreciated.
if not i might just sell it and get an old fender vibroverb or a bandmaster..or something....
thanks much.

Use the clean channel with one of the overdrive boosts to get that breaking up sound SRV had. Use plenty of bass and set mids about half way with the treble around half way too. Then for a bit more kick, use the TS-9
