Title: DiMarzio and SD Colour codes HELP!
Post by: _tom_ on January 09, 2007, 08:32:40 PM
My mates asked me to wire up his guitar with some Dimarzios(I tried to convince him to go BK but he just wouldnt because they're a rip off apparently..) and I'm confused when it comes to the colour codes. The guitar is a H-H strat with 1 vol, 2 tone and a 5 way switch. The only diagram that I can find for this is the SD one below.

I found a table with all the different manufacturers colour codes but it just ended up confusing me furthere. So will the SD wiring in the pic here work for DiMarzio, if not which wires go in the place of which? It'd be helpful if someone could actually draw on the diagram for me

edit - think I've got it but would like someone to check it as I dont wanna mess my mates guitar up -

hmm bollocks.

It'd be easier if he wouldnt be so awkward and got a standard 3 way switch instead of using the old 5 way because I cant seem to find any schematics which use a 5 way switch, HH and 1 vol 2 tone.

I can help out on the colour coding:

(BKP use the same colour codes as Peavey)

Cheers, I've saved that pic!

Anyway, I tried wiring it up according to the SD diagram but the stock fender wiring for tone etc is different. Still, tried it but when tapping the poles you get a sound when the switch is on every setting..

So I doubt it works properly so I think I'll just wire it up for him from scratch following a guitarelectronics diagram like I did my own strat.

Any ideas where to get a normal 3 way selector switch? Tele style I guess.

Try WD or Allparts for the switch.

Just a thought, but if you get a 5-way Superswitch like this one (http://www.allparts.uk.com/catalogue/product_info.php?cPath=91004_91059&products_id=11190), you could wire it like a Fender Double Fat Strat:

http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/pdf_temp1/stratocaster/0117200A/SD0117200APg2.pdf

(Edit:  The Fender diagram uses the Duncan colour codes.  And on second thoughts, it might not work 100%, I think the neck pickup needs a reverse magnet for the split humbuckers to be hum-cancelling in position 2)

I dont think he really wants any coil split options come to think of it, he just wants bridge, middle and neck so I think a superswitch would be too much (plus it just looks scary to wire up  )

Yeah, I've got one of those Double Fat Strats but I've never messed with the wiring   .

I'll change the pickups eventually, but I'll leave the wiring as it is.  I can follow a diagram well enough, but I really don't understand how those Superswitches work.

Yeah I mean I've wired up my old strat from scratch and it wasnt too bad but those superswitches are just so intimidating

Only trouble now is, I cant find any diagrams with a 3 way tele/strat style switch for a HH guitar, they only seem to have toggles!

Try combining these two diagrams:

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/schematics/2h_1v_2t_3w.html

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/schematics/std_tele.html

You can just substitute the Tele switch into the humbucker diagram - in both cases there are two wires "in" to the switch and one wire "out".

(I'm not keen on Duncan pickups but their wiring diagrams are great!  :D )

Cheers Phil (I assume thats your "normal" name :P)

I take it on the tele diagram you just join up the lugs on the switch with some standard wire.

Yep.  You could probably get away with bare wire but it's better to use insulated, just in case something shorts out on it.

Yeah I thought so.. I still cant figure it out very well so if anyone knows how to do this, please draw on in paint where each wire goes!

OK Tom, you asked for it.  Here it is, beautifully rendered.  Stop sniggering!!!

The wire going nowhere on the far right hand side of the diagram (attached to the back of the neck tone control) is for grounding the metal chassis of the switch.

The easiest way to do this is to attach the end of the wire to a lug (or whatever it's called, pictured below), then place the lug such that one of the switch mounting screws goes through the hole in the lug and holds it tightly between the switch and the scratchplate.

Thanks a lot Phil, I will have to try that if it doesnt work properly after my attempt :)

My mates got back to me, he says all positions work but he says he cant tell if it sounds right because hes only got his 2w marshall micro stack handy !

btw, if anyone cares, just been cranking my Laney today. I bet the neighbours hate it but the tone is so good  Its got that ACDC crunch, and that really nice crunchy slightly overdriven clean when you roll down the guitars volume. Perfect!

Here is a great guide:

BKPs are the same as Anderson for colours

Cheers Jonathan, it'll probably come in handy sometime.

Anyway my mates got back to me and he says the guitar sounds awesome now so I must've got it right to start with.

Hey Philly Q,

In all seriousness, I think your drawing skills VERY closely rival that of the art teachers at my school  :)

I'm actually pretty good at drawing, just not with a mouse.

If God (assuming for a moment he/she/it exists) had meant us to draw with mice, he'd have given them nibs.  Or something.  What am I talking about?
