Title: New guitar teacher
Post by: samoth2 on January 11, 2007, 07:34:50 PM
Finally found my self a teacher, been looking for a teacher since summer.

So I'm happy right now.

Then when I get better + get a toneport I can record clips of my beloved Rebel Yells.

He's the guitarist of a danish metal band called tribus http://www.soundvenue.com/band.asp?id=535

I think it sounds pretty cool, he just needs some Warpigs

No real reason for making this thread, just wanted to tell someone  :P

Always good to hear of folks finding a good tutor

Once I get a job at home, I will finally get myself a tutor it's only taken me about 25 years to make the decision

It only took me one year :)

Don't you think it will be hard to find a teacher able to teach you something? When you played for so long.

From now on I will never mention the word teacher again, so I won't have to listen to everybodies sexual fantasies about Sambos "hot" teacher.

Between a complete lack of musical ability, acute stage fright (can't even play infront of my kids) and a huge break from attempting to play I should say theres a huge I could be taught.

As I have always been a techie, I tended to look for any excuse to avoid playing, and every excuse to modify stuff (sad but true).

Except I'm sure that you can play better.

Philly, as an diversion from Sambos hormonal problems ;)

There was an discussion a few weeks ago about Allan Holdsworths guitars we where both involved in, I found an old issue of Music UK (Nov 83) over xmas that I brought back with me. It details the Charvels he was using in those days.

Once I get some time I will type in the relevant section and post it in the original thread.

Don't bet on it, Rob.  I can improvise endlessly (and clumsily) over a 12-bar blues in E, but that's about my limit.

Actually, I'm selling myself short.  I can do A and G as well.

Looking forward to the Holdsworth article!

Stage fright must be a real pain-I have been gigging so many years now I don't get bothered though I still get buzzed enough to give an edge to my playing.I like the idea of getting a teacher to send me off in a new direction -pity I am not close to Sambo's teach.

I think it was becasue I was the only person who I knew who didn't give up learning to play withing 4 weeks of starting. It became a solitary activity (leading to dangerous ground arn't I). Also it leads to poor practice routines and a general lack of progress (for most people)

However because I learnt to juggle infront of other people I have all the confidence in the world and it dosn't cause me the slightest problem.

I guess it's conditioning, the old jazz guys couldn't play when sober, simply becasue they had become conditioned to play after a few drinks.

Hence I need a tutor to move my playing on to something than arsing around with nothing but a vague destination.

I'm sure I've said this before, but maybe it's true for you too - ever since I started playing and got interested in guitar, I've known a lot more in my head than I have in my hands.

That "gap" keeps getting bigger as the years pass, and whenever I think I must knuckle down and practice I really have no idea where to start or what direction to go in.  It usually means I go right back to basics, quickly get bored then get lazy again...

I think you're right, finding a good teacher probably would be the best thing to do.

You guys are riding around in the same boat I'm in....

I've just started with a teacher here in Oz and the first thing he said to me.

"Just by coming to practice with me once a week you've taken a huge step forward"

Money changing hands or not, he's right. I know he's right.

When I gave  up lessons a few years a go to start an accoustic duet with a guy, just by playing twice a week with someone else I took huge leaps forward in my playing.

Once that fell apart I really didnt have anyone else to bounce off of for nearly 2 years. I can honestly say I really suck compared to my playing back then.

....So I'm back with a teacher and starting over again!

I had my first lesson today, and I really enjoyed it.

I didn't play so much, but he seems to "personalize" his teaching so that I will enjoy it. And that's great :D

Excellent, I'm sure it will take him a couple of lessons to work out what you need to work on coupled with what you actually want to do.

Congrats.

Thanks.

It also worked as motivation that he said i had a great technique, considering i only played a year.

It's more motivating when someone who plays guitar says that instead of your mom ;)
