Title: Miracle Man in Tyler
Post by: zerolight on January 13, 2007, 03:43:40 PM
I'm thinking of having Tim rewind my Tyler HB to a Miracle Man, but for now at least will keep the Dimarzio VVs. The Tyler HB is a custom wound pup specifically for Tyler by Seymour Duncan. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, but if I like the HDs as much as I think I will in my PRS, then I'm thinging it might be nice to spoil the Tyler too. The Tyler has a midboost preamp which I generally only use with the single coils, but it might fatten out the MM for an alternate clean sound too.

Thoughts?

The Tyler midboost preamp might make the Miracle Man too mid-heavy. The Miracle Man has no trouble being brutal as is. It doesn't need much help.

So why do you want a Miracle Man if I may ask? You should be warned that the Miracle Man will bury the Dimarzio's for output.

I'm not at all sure I want to change the pup in the Tyler at all to be honest. It's a perfectly fine pickup, and it'll depend on how far the HDs knock my socks off in my McCarty IRW first. However I had a tough time choosing between the the MM and HD for my McCarty.

As I say, thus far I only use the Midboost with the single coils and the humbucker on it's own. If I were to put an MM in the Tyler it would be to get that Zakk Squeal and tightness in my "super-strat" with the two single coils remaining in place for versatility. My current bucker does pretty much everything up to, but excluding the MM squeal, so if I were to choose another pup of lesser output, it'd be pretty much like for like. The Tyler pups are not mass produced Duncans, they're handmade, scatter wound, custom Duncans made only for Tyler. Are they on a part with BKPs? I don't know, but I doubt there'll be a dramatic difference in changing like for like pups. So a change would be specifically to get a dramatic difference... and the MM clip that Tim played still sounds awesome.

Besides, the Demeter midboost in the Tyler has a fairly dramatic gain and fattening affect on the VVs, I doubt it would bury them... though it's more likely I'd use them on different tracks.

Are they def scatterwound? I didn't know SD did that, even on the handmade ones.

Well, Tylers are extraordinary expensive, not sure if I'd touch anything on that guitar to make it non-original.

The Alnico Pro IIs that Slash uses are scatterwound, unlike the production ones. I remember reading that in an interview with Slash.

I think I agree with the other poster. Why change it from stock, when I'm happy how it sounds, just for the sake of bkp-ifying it.

If you really wanted to put BKPs in it I would probably remove all of the electronics and scratchplate together and get a new scratchplate made and then you can fit a regular shape humbucker rather than the slanted type.

I've decided against it for now. The pups in it are excellent. But I've ordered my HDs for the PRS now.
