Title: P90 Style Pickup Adjustment
Post by: chrisheyes on January 16, 2007, 12:15:23 AM
I've just dropped a BKP92 into my Tokai Les Paul Special

Can anyone offer advise on how to adjust the pickup height on these P90
style pickups so that I can get a better ballance with the neck pickup.
At present the pickup screws directly to the body.

Should I put some packing under the pickup to raise its height or raise the individual pole pieces ?

Cheers

I'd do a combination of both.  Raise the pickup first, and if you need more height pull the polepieces out a tad.

Gibson used to use a foam pad under the bridge pickups in the early guitars. In later models they made the rear pickup sit higher with a spaced inside the pickup.  BK make copies of the original pickups, so you will need to add a foam pad underneath.  The other thing you can do is put the Strat pickup tubing around the mounting screws before you put the pickup into the guitar.

I have a friend who always screws the pole pieces out a lot to compenstate, but I really don't like this look and prefer to pad the pickup to raise it.

Off topic Chris, but is that a TonePros bridge or a Pigtail?

Well spotted Pilly Q - It's a Pigtail

Thanks for the advise PhilKing & Twinfan

I'll give putting some compressible material under the pickup.

At present the bridge pickup is way too much  treble/top in comparison
with the deep woody Gotoh LP-OLD stock neck pickup.

Thought so!  :D

They're excellent bridges, I've got one on an SG and one on my Melody Maker.  The TonePros looks almost identical but the Pigtail's much lighter.

The P-92 is a hot BKP-90, so I'm not surprised it's very different from the neck pickup......

It's different in a unexpected way - Lower output than the neck and considerably brighter than the pickup it replaced

Out of curiosity, could you tell me how deep the routes are in your guitar.  I'm just about to route for P90's in a guitar that I'm building and I'd like to double check my measurements.  Cheers mate.

Bridge pickup = 16mm depth

Neck pickup = 20mm depth
