Title: i hate to add another "which pickup" thread but...
Post by: BaLLsAgNe on January 17, 2007, 01:31:54 PM
as of today i will finally have enough money to buy these pickups. problem is i dont know which ones i want. im looking to put them in a Jackson SL-1 (alder body, HSS set, floyd rose) and a Jackson SLSMG (very thin/light mahagony body, HH set, string thru). i would like the two guitars to sound as similar as possible so i dont have to set the EQ everytime i change guitars. if my amp matters i have an ENGL SE EL34 version with JJ KT77 power tubes and the preamp tubes are 1 tung sol, 2 JJs, and 2 9th gen chinese (in that order). the cabinet is an ENGL Vintage. for both guitars i will mostly be using the neck pickups for clean and solos, so they will have to have very nice clean and a solo tone along the lines of Dave Murray (iron maiden), John Petrucci etc (basically good for shred?). the bridge pickups on each will be mostly for rythm and melody, and im looking for tone along the lines of Hammerfall, Iced Earth, Dream Evil, Helloween, Iron Maiden, Edguy, Dio, Megadeth, Ozzy (Rhoads and Lee eras), Stratovarius etc. for the 2 single coil slots in the SL-1 im thinking the Trilogy Suites, and for the bridge pickups im stuck between the Holy Diver, Painkiller, Nailbomb, Miracle Man and Rebel Yell. for the neck humbucker in the SLSMG im thinking maybe a cold sweat or just puting a calibrated set in that guitar. thanks for any help/info and sorry for the long post.

Cold sweat in the neck, definately.

I'd say miracle man or holy diver in the bridge, depending on how much 'push' you need.

yea im pretty decided on the cold sweat as well.. how well do they clean up and how do they sound for leads compared to the other pickups? i guess that leaves me at choosing bridge humbuckers. i hear the miracle man a lot but i dont know if i want a ceramic pickup or not. how is ceramic different from alnico?

Ceramic gives a tighter, puncher, more focussed sound. If you're using your bridge purely for distorted sounds then it would be fine. I think you need to decide just how hot you want your pups, and decide between probably Cold Sweat, Holy Diver, Painkiller and Miracle Man. The Holy Diver will probably be most akin to your current SL1 sound, and the Miracle Man closest to your SLSMG.

i guess whether its ceramic or alnico wont bother me any. when it comes to bridge humbuckers i just want whatever will get me closest to the names i listed above (Hammerfall and Iced Earth being top priority)

I would say order from here, but I would also say to mail Tim with your requirements as he definately can make the best suggestions for your needs.

By ordering from your local dealer you'll be supporting their business and BKPs international network, also any problems you can go straight back to them for help, but if money is a major priority you can order from the site as it will save you some cash 8)

for a bridge pickup i want something with tight (but still a bit heavy) bass, but the mids have to be quite present and the highs should sparkle with a nice crunch that doesnt pierce the ears

the Holy Diver was the pickup i was most considering a while ago when i thought i would be buying pickups, but everyone recommended everything else.. now this time everyone says holy diver (i must say that is the best name for a pickup ever) lol. how well do they articulate? are they a good power metal pickup? is it a better pickup for an alder body or a thin/light mahagony body or both? do they go well with a cold sweat (or trilogy suite in the HSS guitar) in the neck or should i get a calibrated set (or irish tours in the HSS)

are the low end frequencies going to heavily outweigh the highend frequencies wtih the Holy Diver?

im just about positive i want to stick with Alnico humbuckers. i already have a highgain amp with highgain tubes and speakers geared towards metal, so i feel that going ceramic is going to make everything way too high gain for me. i guess that would cut my bridge pickup choices down to the Holy Diver and the Nailbomb, and since the HD was already recommended several times i will get one. the question is should i get two of them or 1 HD and 1 nailbomb? how are these pickups alike and different? i wont be back on for quite a few hours so no need to worry about me bumping this post up again for a while
