have a gordon smith graduate slimline, am after the queens of the stone age kinda stoner rock sound out of it.
Suggestions please

For his sound I would go for something preferably with AlNiCo II and around 14K. I don't know if it is possible to have it with AlNiCo II but an Abraxas would be my choice. Failing that a Stormy Monday or Mule with AlNiCo II.

was thinkin mule

Something not to high output & vintage sounding so i think the Mule would be there, maybe a black dog - you don't want anything that is too bright. as josh homme has a very bass/mid biassed sound

Are you thinking AII for maximum mush, Steve?

He does like DiMarzio Distortions though, so maybe something a little hotter?

Yeah, I think the mush would help with the stoner rock vibe + I know he uses Duncan Custom Customs which are pretty high output with AlNiCo II.

as i mentioned in another thread, i accidentally stumbled upon what seemed a perfect QOTSA sound on my Warpig neck pickup. it has both the thick low end and the articulate note definition. others have said lower output pickups, but actually the neck warpig isn't THAT hot, although it would certainly scare off a Stormy Monday!

Don't trust anything you read or hear from Josh Homme himself. He's quite open about the fact he almost always lies about what he uses.
For my money, nothing too hot, but some good pedals into an amp not meant to distort too much...
-
I think most of Josh Homme's signature tone comes from those Ampeg heads he uses.
I'd use a darker sounding PAF or just use the Mule and roll off the guitar's tone a little.

It's interesting what Blue said, as one of the first thoughts that popped into my head was Warpig. At a fairly low gain setting the Warpig should give you tons of fat sludge. If you think about it the Sabbath sound does have some stoner aspects to it.
More conventionally thinking I'd say Black Dog

I agree with blue here, I have a warpig neck in an SG and it gives a great QOTSA sound, almost made for it. Maybe a bit more SFTD than Rated-R, but you can always dial the volume back a bit. And you'll get a mean clean sound off it too :)

I'd have said maybe a Mule (but that's always a safe, generic recommendation! ;)), maybe a Crawler, maybe an MQ!
I wouldn't have thought so hot as a Warpig .... What about a Pig-90?
