Title: Holy Diver + Alnico 8 magnet = modern metal?
Post by: ericsabbath on January 21, 2007, 01:17:12 AM
hey guys
i'm brazilian and new in the forum

i'm in search for the perfect pickup for my lawsuit hurricane les paul custom
it had gotoh, emg zw set, seymour duncan custom 8 (alnico 8 magnet ruled) with duncan 59 (urgh!) and now it has gibson 500t/496r
i like emg 85 and 496r in the neck, but i think in the bridge my favorite was custom 8

i use a peavey rockmaster preamp and i'm waiting for a mesa single rectifier solo head series 2

my favorite tones are in Reinventing The Steel, Dead Heart In A Dead World,  The Blessed Hellride, Jerry Cantrell, Hugo Mariutti (Shaaman) and Killswitch Engage live tone
new Arch Enemy sounds awesome too

i want a modern pickup that's still fine for 70's and 80's rock/metal
i like Black Sabbath, Dio, Ozzy, Whitesnake

i think warpig is too much compressed for me and miracle man sounded too murch sharp (like an emg 81)

anyone has an alnico miracle man or another kind of different combinations?
does tim make alnico 8 pickups?
alnico 8 in my duncan custom added a lot of low mids, and a darker and smooth top end
it would sound good in a holy diver or a miracle man?
judging only by soundclips on this forum, holy diver was the closest pickup for the tone i'm searching for, and Antag's rig is close to mine

i'm using a 500t but i think it's lacking gain and it's sounding too crunchy (not exactly muddy like a duncan distortion)

If memory serves, Tim doesn't like the sound of Alnico  8.

hmm
yes
i think the only famous brand using alnico 8 was Ibanez in the early Super 70 pickups

it usually sounds almost as powerful as a ceramic, but darker with deep low mids, instead of that hollow mids of alnico 5
the highs sound round like alnico 5, but not harsh as ceramic
the bottom is very tight, differing from alnico 2
i think alnico 5 pickups with too much low mids may sound muddy when modded to this magnet, but for regular alnico 5 and ceramic pickups is a great mod

Here's the thread where Tim talks about Alnico 8.

Of course this doesn't mean it's cr@p or you won't think it sounds good just the only mention of it on here.

well...
he just said it sounds different, and it's true
it was very nice with my duncan custom, and there are some jb/distortion 8 and screamin demon 8 users on seymour forum
i would like to know how it would sound in a HD or MM

my magnet is a regular a8 bar from allstar magnetics
it didnt work well with gibson 500t cause it has 4 ceramic bars
i removed the 2 center bars, but a8 isn't strong enough to replace 2 ceramic bars
but in standard seymour duncans with normal sized magnets like the custom model and it's variations it sounds great

Fale Eric! Bom saber que não sou o unico Brasileiro aqui!  8)

Well, to make others understand I will speak in english :  Alnico 8 + HD wouldn't be too low mids heavy for a Les Paul ? According to a lot of posts here, the Holy Diver already is a very fat pickup. I THINK a A8 magnet would work better with something like a Rebel Yell or a Nailbomb, because they're more open and defined.

Btw, I have an A8 magnet here and i am thinking of swapping the A5 magnet on the Custom 5 on my SG or my Les Paul, until i have the money to put BKs on them. How the clean sound worked for you whem comparing Ceramics to the A8 ? I had a Ceramic Custom and really really really hated it - for everything, including distortion.

I had a Warpig in my Les Paul and would never say it was compressed.  It had all the bass and low mids you seem to want.  A ceramic magnet version may be what you're after - it'll pull the mids back a bit and make the bass tighter (not that the standard Warpig has loose bass)

opa! e ae!

i don't know how it would sound in a HD, but i think it would sound brighter in the mid side, cause alnico 5 has less mids, but probably heavier... i don't know if it would get muddy

try it in your custom V
if you don't like you can put your a5 magnet back
it will sound less mid hollow and punchier
the clean will sound more like a JB than a ceramic custom or custom V
the clean is very bright, not that dark paf sound of custom V or 59, but there is no ceramic harshness
maybe the distorted sound could sound a little muddy to your ears, cause it's really lo mid heavy, but the highs are very clean

i think it sounds too powerful for me
i want a medium high output pickup
i like how it sounds, but i want something not so brutal
and miracle man seems to lack that mid fullness that i want
does anyone have tried the alnico 5 miracle man?

hell... i'm confused  :?

so...

alnico warpig, holy diver, alnico miracle man or a custom pickup (probably holy diver or miracle man) with alnico 8 magnet?
everyone here seems to worship the warpig

and for the neck position?
i want a pickup like emg 85 and my gibson 496R

Just an update on Alnico 8-I've had a considerable play with it in various types of BKPs and haven't found any real advantages over the AII, III, IV an d Vs we already use. This doesn't mean I wouldn't rule it out from use in the future.I've also be playing with AVI too although it's very much like a darker IV in the the way it powers the coils.

so what magnet or pickup would you recommend me?
i'd like to hear an alnico miracle man
how does it compare to a stock holy diver?

We have made Alnico V MMs over the years and they do sound good-not so surgically tight as a ceramic in the bass or so smooth in the mid.Overall I would describe the tone as more aggressive.

A more aggresive Miracle Man? It boggles the mind.

That's odd. A ceramic Warpig has been described as even more brutal than a AV Warpig. Why would a AV MM be more aggressive than the C MM?

Ceramic Warpig is like a souped up Miracle Man to my ears.

eh.. maybe he was answering my question about alnico miracle man vs stock holy diver (?)
but i'm still confused
i think i'll go with holy diver

I think AV has crunchier mids, slightly looser bass and and is generally not as smooth as ceramic, so combine that with the high power and you get more
