Title: Placed a bid on a guitar...

Not one that you would associate with me really! But i think it looks cool, though i don't know how it plays and i'm having second thoughts about bidding on it, at the moment i'm kind of hoping i don't win.

But can you give me some info on it?
All i know is that it has Floyd Rose II, i would like to know the wood if possible.

I had a non-floyd MIJ strat (60's re-ish) of this era many moons ago. I think the body was either Alder or Basswood. The top isn't a veener, so far as I remember, it was a "Fotoflame" thing, at least in the Fender catalogue. What you can expect, at the very least, is that it will be damnably well made, and the neck is pretty cool. Very nice tone off it too (to my ears, much better than the MIA Voodoocaster that I had afterwards, as the MIJ was nicked). I'd imagine it'll take upgrades very well.

Yeah some HC reviews said it was foto-flame, though i don't know what that is  but it sounds better than a veneer!
So it is a good guitar then, i'm not buying a piece of cr@p?
I wanna use it as an classic 80's rock/metal axe, like Judas Priest, Autograph, Tesla etc.

Yes Sam you're right. It's just a print of flamed maple that's glued to the body and then sealed. They're not bad guitars, but they really are the sort of guitar you'd want to modify.

ah cheers for clarifying steve.

one thing i dont get about that guitar though- a guy asked a question about the logo... and the answer stated it said fender on the headstock, no mention of squier... yer the description says its a squier? :?

I found a picture of the same guitar somewhere else. The headstock says Fender Stratocaster then at the end in small print it says Floyd Rose and underneath that it says Squier something (Squier series?)

I really hope someone outbids me!!

If it's a Japanese built Fender, it should be a great guitar.

I think Joe withdrew his bid because he found out it was a Squier..  I thought the Jap ones were meant to be good though :?

They are.  They were just branded as Squiers, they're now "Fender Japan".  Very good guitars for the money.  My '83 JV Squier is the best Strat I've played.

I withdrew the bid, i just didn't like much about it by the end of the night and i didn't want to waste money on a guitar i know not much about, also the stuff i did know about was not too impressive, a foto flame finish a floyd II etc. not the best features ever made.

If you scouted on ebay for a while then i bet your could find something close to that. Charvels go for that price and they are quality.

Wise move; you obviously listened to that Inner Voice!
Those early Squiers like the JV and Silver Series do the biz certainly in terms of build, though many of them may well need a refret by now as the wire seemed to me a bit soft.
I think I'm close in saying that for about £100 more(or even a bit less on a good day) you could hold out for a real s/h MIJ strat. At one time I had a US Star Plus Deluxe, now subsumed by my MIJ '68 Reissue and I kid you not that the latter is more responsive and a better player. Certainly many folks rate them above the present US strats.

The only Fender strat i would buy would have to have a humbucker and a floyd rose.

I'm not all for floyd, but my next guitar is going to be a floyd guitar because i don't have one yet. I currently play an Explorer.
