Long story bearable, I order a Warpig set for my MIJ Ibanez S-Classic with the following specs:
1) Ceramic bridge
2) customized Warpig neck...I wanted the power of a Warpig, but the cut of the Cold Sweat neck pickup
3) 53 mm, 4 conductor
4) Open covers with screws instead of allen bolts. Very plain looking, but I like the "Wolf in sheeps clothing" approach to guitar appearance.
Long story short I used to love this guitar, now I can't stop playing it. I sent the following email to Tim today and it explains it all.
For those who don't believe that BKP are simply the best there is, BELIEVE IT.
Hi Tim, I finally got my Ibanez S-Classic back with the BKP Warpig set you built for me (Ceramic bridge and "Cold Sweat-like" Warpig in the neck. To put some context around this, the guitar and pickups have the following configuration (via the 4 conductor wiring and 5 way pickup switch):
Switch Position 1: Neck humbucker
Switch Position 2: Neck tapped
Switch Position 3: Neck and bridge tapped
Switch Position 4: Bridge tapped
Switch Position 4: Bridge humbucker
In order of usage, the neck humbucker is outstanding!!! Whatever custom winding you did to the neck made this THE best neck humbucker I've ever used, bar none. I was hesitant to order a Warpig neck because I don't like fat bassy sounding neck pickups (ala EMG 85). This pickup sounds HUGE but has cut and clarity like the Cold Sweat...but bigger...much bigger!
The neck pickup tapped is freakin' incredible. I had a hard time playing heavy stuff with the bridge pickup because I couldn't stop myself from playing blues licks with this thing. Warm, clear and tons of tone. Simply beautiful sounding.
The middle position is great for funk...the tapped neck and bridge have great clarity and bite for 9th chords and staccatto funk rhythms.
...but hands down, the bridge humbucker is the most devastating metal pickup I've used. I never thought I'd find something to rival 18V (two battery configuration) EMG 81 in a bridge but this does it EASILY...but with way more tone and without the sterility. Also position 4 (bridge tapped) actually sounds suprisingly good when I turn the tone knob down a bit.
All in all, I am blown away and I can't thank you enough...especially for the neck pickup! Whatever custom winding you did on it made it sound God-like.
Right now I'm actually on EBay bidding on the same Ibanez that these pickups went into (albeit in a different color) for the sole purpose of buying a set of Nailbombs. Also, when I get my G&L Legacy I will be looking at Apaches or Irish Tours (not sure yet).
This is my third set of BKP's (first is an MM bridge/CS neck in my Les Paul studio, MQ set in my Les Paul Special), and I am convinced these pickups are the logical addition to any guitar I buy. You have a customer for LIFE.
Thanks so much!!!

wow..... sounds great Tony!!!
if i upgrade my neck pickup, it seems that that winding will be for me, and according to you the C-Warpig will suit me fine!
enjoy your pickups!

Cool stuff indeed.

i hope the new site will have a testimonies section because i'm seeing more and more of these.
I cant wait until my ceramic warpig arrives!

If metal is what you're after, the ceramic 'Pig is as metal as metal gets!
I actually just went home from work during my lunch break to fire up my Mesa/Boogie F-30 to hear this thing wide open. The only thing I added today was my Maxon OD-9 overdrive...I like the "bite" it adds to the bottom heavy Mesa. Anyway, the sheer power of this guitar through that amp is staggering...but I still couldn't help going to the clean channel and switching to the neck pickup tapped...I cannot stress how great this neck pickup is, especially tapped!
From everything I've read (and with my personal experience with my other two sets of BKP) I *expected* the ceramic Warpig to be devestating...and it is. It outpowers the EMG 81, EMG 85 and Dimebucker EASILY.
I did NOT expect the neck pickup to be this great clean and versatile! To be fair, this Ibanez is pretty unique sounding...it's 25.1 neck scale and wrap-around bridge give it a very unique "twang"...but the EMG 60A in the neck that was previously there did NOT bring out the true tone of this guitar like the Warpig custom neck.

Cool stuff indeed.
I noticed you have both Slow Hands and Apaches? I'm going to be picking up a G&L Legacy custom toward the end of this year and I'm looking at one of those sets...just not sure which one yet.
In the meantime, I need to score another Ibanez so I can have a reason to get a Nailbomb set!
-
If I had to chose between the two I would say Apache-they seem to be able to do just about anything I want. They are very sweet with all the classic Strat tones-bags of Character. The Slowhands are also extremely good but not quite so versatile.

How does the 'Pig handle classic rock? (70's, 80's)
I like my nailbomb because it still has that classic vibe, but with a nice heavy edge.
I'm tempted to buy a new guitar just so I can put a ceramic 'pig in...
-
very nice... how much extra did it cost to get the custom wind? and how did you go about doing that, just ordered through an email with tim?
I was thinking about a custom wound bridge pickup based on the nailbombs but with a little more output, and for the neck something with similar characteristics to what he made for you
let me know about the custom winds when you get a chance. I want to place an order soon, so that info would be very helpful

Good stuff! I knew I should have tapped my neck Warpig when I installed it ... but I couldn't wait to just play it :) Sounds like I should get around to it though.
On a related theme, what is the tonal difference between a ceramic warpig and an alnico one in the bridge ... I went for the Alnico as I wanted to be able to get a bit more of a classic rock sound from the neck as well as full on metal, but _everyone_ who has a bridge pig seems to have a ceramic one ... hrmmmm

Tim charged me nothing extra for the custom wind or for the Ceramic bridge. :D

I'm not quite sure how the bridge would handle classic rock. I'd guess that with the volume rolled off a tad, it may handle it well.
To be honest, I didn't really grab this pickup for that...I got this set for metal and (at times) funk. For classic rock I have my Les Paul Special with Mississippi Queens and my Les Paul Studio with the MM/CS combo. I think the MM handles classic rock pretty well with the volume rolled down to 7.
From what I have been told by a Gibson SG user who reffered me to BKP in the first place, the Alnico Warpigs are GREAT for classic rock. My neck Warpig is Alnico but it's wound in a way to give it more top end (ala Cold Sweat neck) but with more power so it's the ultimate shred pickup!
In the future (near future) I plan on grabbing the Nailbomb set for their versatility.

I don't own the Alnico bridge, but my understanding (and I could be wrong about this) is that the Alnico is more versatile, especially after you roll the volume down.
In the bridge I just really, really like a tight, bright powerful humbucker, so 95% of the time I go with Ceramic. In my next Ibanez though I will be going with a "stock" Nailbomb set...although I'm tempted to get another Warpig set, except this time in Alnico.

Its def versatile, I guess I was right (for my prefs) to go Alnico. Ta for the info :)

tony, is the ceramic warpig a bright pickup? if so, do you think that Tim can do a custom wind to make it darker?

Nice! So, if I wanted to order something custom, I'd just have to make my order through an email instead of the website's checkout area? Just give info and credit card details in the email?
By the way, what you are describing the neck pickup like sounds PERFECT to me. I want a hot, clear, cutting shred pickup, and it's a huge plus that you said it sounds great tapped. When tapped, can it do really clean clean well or does it breakup a bit because of still a high output? Also, you got me considering the warpig ceramic... would you say it's tighter? I always put off the regular warpig because I heard it had a lot of bass... and I don't want that... I want it to be tight and balanced, having some good aggressive mids and crunch...
Sorry for the questions. just... I feel bad if I keep bothering tim with questions like this, and up until now I was considering either a NB/CS set or a MM/CS set and your post about your custom winds have got me really interested! :?
Let me know what you think when you get a chance :)

I emailed Tim before ordering my BKP's and asked how I would go about getting a different HSS set than one of the 'default' ones, and he said that when you order, there's a comments box where you can ask for a different set, I assume that's what you'd do if you wanted a custom wind.
Muz :D

Well the custom thing caught me by surprise...basically when I emailed Tim and told him what I want, he told me to put exactly what I want in the comments box. What really surprised me is that there was no extra charge for the Ceramic bridge or the custom wound neck. When I sent the order through and subsequently emailed him to insure that he got the instructions, he said he fully understood what I want and was going to wind the custom neck based on what I asked. In short, I said I wanted the power of the Warpig neck (to match the bridge) but I wanted that cut and clarity that the Cold Sweat neck has...and that is EXACTLY what this pickup has. Before this, the Cold Sweat neck was my favorite neck pickup...this custom warpig neck is my new favorite! To be fair, the CS neck I have is in a Les Paul Studio and it's not tapped though.
Actually the neck tapped sounds incredible, and does cleans extremely well. That's the thing that surprised me the most about this set...I expected sheer power from the Ceramic 'Pig in the bridge (which I got), but I did not expect the neck to sound as good as it does clean while in humbucker mode and tapped. I just spent three hours working on my lessons this week (major 7th arpeggios) and I haven't moved the pickup switch off of position 2 (that's the neck tapped)...it sounds amazing! And it definitely does not break up through my Mesa in the clean and "slightly" overdriven channels when it's tapped. I believe this has to do with cutting the power in half in the tapped position.
You're tastes in pickups sounds IDENTICAL to mine! My first choice of pickups for the Ibanez were the Nailbomb bridge and Cold Sweat neck...and I actually have the MM bridge/CS neck in my Les Paul Studio.
As far as the Ceramic Warpig, the only thing I can liken it to (as I don't have the Alnico Warpig bridge...yet) is an EMG 81 running on two 9v batteries...except this one has more character and just sounds better. Also, based on the 5 way switch, the 3rd position is the neck tapped and bridge tapped so I get great funk tones...which is quite a surprise for a guitar that is soon to become my metal guitar!
To be fair though, I'm sure the Nailbomb or an Alnico Warpig in the bridge would theoretically be more versatile, but this guitar has a five way switch and I can get a ton of tones with the way the pickups are wired. Just remember to order 4 conductor wiring with whatever you get so you can tap them.

Hey Tony, is your neck 'pig ceramic too, or just the bridge?

Hi Muzzzz, just the bridge is ceramic. The neck is Alnico V which from what I understand is great for cleans.

I guess it really doesn't mater to me how well the bridge pickup cleans up, because I'd mostly use the neck pickup tapped for cleans. For clean bridge stuff, I'd just use my G&L Asat Special tele... Do you think the warpig being ceramic cuts off some of the bassyness? I really like the midrange sound of the nailbomb, but I want it to be more powerful like the warpig... maybe I should just ask for a ceramic warpig voiced a little more in the midrange for more crunch and less bass? Or maybe it would fit in okay if it was in a jackson... because they are alder bodies... bright guitars... hmmm

You have a G&L? I foolishly sold my G&L Legacy last year and have been kicking myself ever since. G&L's are outstanding.
Anyway, that was my approach...use the neck for tapped cleans. What surprised me though is how the neck tapped combines with the bridge tapped based on the way I had the guitar wired.
Theoretically I think the ceramic Warpig has less bass, but it's definitely not thin sounding. Then again I'm playing it through 2 Mesa/Boogie amps which tend to be very dark sounding anyway. So it still has plenty of highs and plenty of mid range and a TON of crunch, but thanks to the Mesa it still has that floor-shaking "chug chug" sound.

Right now I'm looking for a really nice shred guitar to put some BKPs in. I think I'm probably going to go with one of the upper end ibanez rg prestige models, or maybe a jackson soloist, but most of the soloists are made of alder... and I like the thicker darker sound of mahogany, so I think the prestige rg's would probably be better suited to me. after I get one, I think I am going to go for a set very similar to yours. I might ask to tweak the bridge a little bit different, but I'm pretty sure I went the output power of the warpigs, and the custom wind neck you got sounds exactly like what I'd want... :)

I'm looking at Ernie Ball Music Mans (Men?).
John Petrucci and Steve Morse have sig models, so they must be pretty good...

I've been wanting to try out some music mans too. I've heard the petrucci sig model is an extremely nice guitar. I usually tend to shy away from sig models of anything though.
I think all the music mans are basswood too. I'd rather have mahogany... I'm just used to that chunky mahogany tone

Right now I'm looking for a really nice shred guitar to put some BKPs in.
I don't mind using sig guitars, unless they're quite obviously someone else's guitar (eg. having a GIANT BULLSEYE or a big engraved 'SRV' on your guitar)

After all, the Les Paul is a signature model.

Damn - You caught me.
Got a terrible remake of the original SG Custom made for Les Paul, made by Epiphone which I bought for 200.
And there was me thinking I didn't have any signature gear =/
