So, I have my favourite riffs that I always try to subtly goad any jam session in the direction of, or simply downright ram them into every quiet moment between songs :) But affter 10 years I feel I am perhaps open to some new ones ... so whatta the riffs that you guys just can't help but play?
For me, its:
Crazy Train, Rhandy Rhoads magic :)
Sin City, AC/DC
The back half of Fade to Black, Metallica
Boom Boom, John Lee Hooker
Sunshine of your Love, Eric Clapton
-
riff is spelled P-A-G-E....anything zepp
-alt. spelling I-O-M-M-I..anything Sab
-also note Morello...I put him up there, too
-
Fair enough Shaman, but which tracks?
Black Dog / Supernaut / Bullet in the head (end bit) given those guys for me.
-
Boom Boom, John Lee Hooker
By extension La Grange, ZZ Top
Voodoo Chile, you know who
8 Miles High, The Byrds
On an acoustic or 12 string I simply have to play "Wish you where here"
-

Bullet in the head has to be one of the most overrated songs ever.
Many people say it's rages best song which I think is insane.
Listen to the riff from Know Your Enemy - Not much gives me more of an urge to nod.
-
Ozzy:
No More Tears, Crazy Train
Dream Theater:
Peruvian Skies, Fatal Tragedy
Pantera:
Cemetery Gates, Floods
(The new) Deep Purple:
Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, Money Talks, Castle Full of Rascals, Loosen my Strings
(The old) Deep Purple:
Love Child
-
Victim Of Changes, Judas Priest.
It's a lot harder to play than it sounds, and it is a GREAT riff to play!!
Also:
Anything by Rush
Lynch-era Dokken
Anything from the firs two RATT albums
Long Distance Love, LOUDNESS. Very tricky riff, as all of Takasaki's are, but very melodic, lots of fun to play, too.
-
In My Time Of Dying by Led Zeppelin
Stoned Again by Sword
Johnny Blade by Black Sabbath (the f*cking titanic riff just before the line "Well you know that Johnny's a spider... ")
Muscle And Blood by Hughes/Thrall
Top Of The Rock by HSAS
Shot Down In Flames by AC/DC
and thousands more I can't think of at the moment...
-
follow up-fave zepp is Immigrant Song
sabbath-how about a little NIB??
ratm-dig Bombtrack...Killing in the Name ...
check out Govt Mule and Thorazine Shuffle-awesome 3 piece masterpiece...the bass plays the main riff while guitar and drums go off into sratosphere-my fave ex. of the power of the 3 piece!
viva la alan woody!!
-
anything by Opeth has great riffs in.... The Baying Of The Hounds could be the most riffing Opeth song though, it's a classic in my view :)
also Pantera: almost all of their songs are groove riff fests!
also Mastodon... their riffs are like big wild beasts coming to destroy the listener
and finally Lamb Of God..... Pantera-esque brutal precision riffing with added aggression
BM
EDIT: oh yeah forgot about Amon Amarth.... Chest beating Viking metal riffs galore!
-
I *must* get round to listening to some Opeth ... in fact I shall add it to todays to do list.
And +1 for Shot Down in Flames. I LOVE that bass line underneath it all ... one of the songs that got me into the Guitar in the first place :)
-
Some more In Flames:
Versus Terminus - Love the riff in that.
Trigger's allways a fun one to play.
Embody the Invisible - A classic
-
^ +1, In Flames:
Scream
Take this life
Cloud Connected
Gyroscope <i love this song!
and finally "Lord Hypnos"
BM
-
EDIT: oh yeah forgot about Amon Amarth.... Chest beating Viking metal riffs galore!
Ooooo, just had a listen to those guys on iTunes ... awesome riffage! I feel a purchase coming on ... Asator on 'With Oden on our Side' is just superb, although probably far faster than anything I could actually play :D
+1 for the recommendation BM, just the sort of thing my new Warpigs have been waiting to play me thinks.
-
for In Flames you can't beat The Jester Race, Jotun and Only For The Weak
and of course Metallica
Master Of Puppets, Battery, Damage Inc., Seek & Destroy, Jump In The Fire, Motorbreath, Enter Sandman, Creeping Death, Fade To Black...
-

i just got With Oden On Our Side this week, it''s full of riffage! "Gods of war arise" and "Hermods ride to hell" are just 2 of my favourites! definitely buy it. also have a good look at their previous album "Fate of Norns" which also is full of riffage!
yeah, Metallica are also awesome, but you forgot Orion and The Call of Ktulu!
BM
-
that's why I put the three dots in the end, otherwise I would be listing all of pre-load 'Tallica songs there
I've had With Oden On Our Side since it was released and it's full of awesome riffs but Versus The World and Once Sent From The Golden Hall still remain my favs
also some Savatage riffs are awesome, for example Hall Of The Mountain King
MADNESS REIGNS... IN THE HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING! *über riffage*

what are they like? sounds good!

kickass 80's heavy metal with some symphonic elements and lots of piano
Jon Oliva has awesome voice and Criss Oliva (R.I.P.) cracked up some amazing solos
Testament's Alex Skolnick also provided the guitar work on the album Handful Of Rain after Criss' death
Zak Stevens became the lead vocalist also at one point, he has great voice but I prefer Jon Oliva's
this thread needs more Judas Priest
Painkiller, Between The Hammer And The Anvil, The Ripper, Electric Eye, Breaking The Law...
also some Accept, Balls To The Walls oooowwwnnsss
-
+1 to the Priest. Grinder off British Steel was the first song I learnt to play by just listening to the record (not that its actually very hard to play, but I was chuffed at the time :) )
And from a totally different genre, I am also partial to a bit of Franz Ferdinand. They have some supremely playable stuff in there IMO, check out Jacqueline, Take me Out, The Fallen. Good tracks when you want to dial the gain back a bit.
-
Mnemic - Door 2.12 - Also ace.
Edit: Add Replica by Fear Factory.
-
noodleplugerine ... is your Avatar your own guitar? 'cos if so its sweet 8)
-
Mnemic - Door 2.12 - Also ace.

+1 for both of those. both great bands!
yeah, is that your guitar?
-
Ordered it on Friday :D
Coming very soon.
ESP Viper Standard
-

It was Dream Gear material? :o
Guess it's not just me that loves it then! :D
Can't wait till I get it, will take photos ofc :D
Going to the LGS and gunna see which BKPs are suited for it aswell.
More riffs - Hot for Teacher and the intro to Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, some good ole VH.

yeah, EVH rocks!!

Surely Camo Nailbombs in such a guitar, anything else would just be wrong :)
+1 for Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, was just getting to grips with that one today, and also 'Oh Well' by (Peter Green's) Fleetwood Mac. That whole intro rocks.

I was thinking Camo Warpigs to murder the 81s that come in it :D
But Nailbombs are definetly crawling into my mind.
They're both aimed for metal, and are both extreme high output, so what's the main difference between them?
-
or you could ask battle-worn camo pickups, that would look brutal
and on topic some Deep Purple wouldn't hurt
Burn, Smoke On The Water, Highway Star, Black Night, Speed King...
-
RATM - Sleep Now in the Fire
Muse - Citizen Erased (you'll need a 7 for it though)
The Darkness _ Black Shuck (OK, contraversial I know, but it is a GREAT rock riff)
Shadows Fall - Enlightened By the Cold

+1 to that Black Knight is one of my all time fave riffs!
Got any pics of some battle-work camos? Didn't even know they were available.

yea, check out Sifu's link
(http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/files/nailbomb_lines_146.jpg)
but this is what I mostly thought of
-
noodleplugerine, surely the camo nailbombs with the Nailbomb text engraved ... your guitar would kill at 10 paces without have to even plug it in!
Edit: In fact, it would be _so_ cool, I might now have to buy one for myself. Hmmmm.
And crank out something like Just One Fix by Ministry on such a beast ... take off and nuke the site from orbit, its the only way to be sure
Regards Nailbomb vs Warpig, I have a Warpig set in an SG and the're superb ... immense bass and middle without being at all muddy. I think the Nailbombs have a touch more treble and a bit less bass ... but I never played one. Many people regard Nailbombs as the weapon of choice in an SG though, so either way I think you'll be well pleased :)

You summed up the exact effect I'm going for - Killing at 10 paces without plugging in. If anyone's seen the Petrucci pisstake video - I NEED KILLZONE MODE!!!
But not too fond of Text engraving unless it's something particularly good, at the moment, it's definetly between a set of Nailbombs or a set of Warpigs.
Maybe a Nailbomb at the bridge for the extra treble, and a warpig at the neck for the bass :O
THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!!!
And since for some reason NOBODY has mentioned it yet....
THUNDERSTRUCK - ACDC
What an intro :D
-
Don't get me started on AC/DC ... Angus Young is the reason why I can only play SG's :) They simply cannot be beaten in the arena of simple but effective. And live they are on another level. I was lucky enough to see them and Hammersmith Apollo in 2003 ... a 5000 seater venue, 10 pounds a ticket, rock heaven!
And attached, an artists imression :) OK, more philistine than artist , but hey its sunday evening ...

So lucky!
Wanted to go to that gig, but sold out in about 30 mins or something insane.
That picture is absolutely ace, but I think it would look better without the engraving.
(You should get a medal for that photoshoppin' mate xD)
-
Sold out in 4 minutes ... fortunately my wife (oh how I love her so) was at the computer and managed to click the 'buy tickets' link before the web page had even fully downloaded. Kerching! what a woman ... :)
And before I change the title of this thread to 'noodleplugerine's bitching camo guitar' (maybe we should start that thred tho ...), back to riffage:
What clean / accoustic riffs do people enjoy playing? My repertoire in that department ends with the intros to One and Sanatarium, and I have alwyas meant to learn some more clean stuff ...
-
theres quality clean and acoustic bits in almost EVERY (if not ALL) Opeth songs!!! buy "Ghost Reveries" and you will be blown away..... metal riffing, cleans, and folky cleans all in one song!!!! it's an awesome listen!
BM
-
Satch - Main riff in Surfing with the Alien.
God I love that stuff.
99no, I'd love would make a topic - But I think I'd look a bit self obsessed :S
Love talking about it though, can't wait till it arrives from the states.

I'm pretty much stuck on one, stairway and shape of my heart
Does anyone know where to find TAB for Come Clarity by In Flames?
-
ultimate-guitar should have it.
-
http://www.fretplay.com/tabs/i/in_flames/
Can't help with 'tother tho. and I wish OLGA.net would sort out their legal issues already :( loved that site.
And yey clips. Must sort out some recording gear myself ... My mac's on-board mic just doesn't cut it :(

I've got my ME-50 going straight into my PC, ofcourse that means I don't get amp tone, but surely the best way to test a new guitar is by ignoring the amp?

Metallica - One, Fade To Black, Sanitarium, The Unforgiven, To Live Is To Die
Blind Guardian - Bard's Song (In The Forest)
Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven, Layla (unplugged version)
-
Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven
Amen.
Doing it vocals+guitar for my solo music exam.

Nice! I can't even _talk_ and play at the same time, let alone sing :) Not that I can sing now I mention it ...
-
Listen to UFO's Strangers in the Night.. full of great riffs/songs :D great CD to have in the car as well, I keep going back to it..
Accept have LOADS of good riffs, 'Losers and Winners' and 'Metal Heart' are probably my favourite songs.
As for acoustic, you cant beat Babe I'm Gonna Leave you by Zep..
Oh and I cant talk and play guitar either, I play in time with my words and not the music

Belphegor - Sepulture of Hypocrisy

Howlin' Wolf - Smokestack Lightning is quality IMO
And AC/DC's only quiet song - Ride On - is one of my faves. Very good use of picking volume in the solos.
-- {aside} Ooo, we won a cricket match :) For once the TVs all round my office have had on something uplifting to watch. Although the ladies doing aerobics in the morning is quite good :D {/aside} --

CKY - 96 Quite Bitter Beings.

I LOVE The main Whammy riff in Searching - Joe Satriani.
