OK, there were a few requests for Painkiller riffage from my review (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6985) in the pickups forum so here is a brief clip I threw together. For comparison I also recorded the same riff with a Miracle Man & Holy Diver.
I'm kinda hesitant to post these, because after getting them to the PC they sound almost identical :oops: FWIW, any differences you can hear between the 3 guitars here are a fraction of the differences to my ear while I was actually in the room playing them :roll: :lol: I guess a proper shoot-out would include cleans where the differences are possibly more pronounced.

I see why you were a little hesitant to post...but I'd say you're on the money for doing so, as these sort of applications are just where the pups would be used. Thanks too for reducing the variables by doing the same riffage for each clip.
As you say, not much in it to some ears...but hey, we're fussy guys about our sound and like to get it just so:
They're all meaty, beaty, big and bouncy:
Number 1: seems to have the most bottom, just. Fine but perhaps a merest tad of flab at the uber-low end?
Number 2: seems clearer and springier somehow...thus more ideal in a slightly different setting. Nice balance over the registers than 1.
Number: my fave actually...seems even slightly "larger" in all respects than the others. Bass register is vast(yum!) but controlled, lovely titanic middles and the right amount of warmth to the highs too.
I'm not sure of the woods of your guitars and how this affects the play of each pup, but they all sound a decent match to me.

I agree, the differnces were really marginal, but I thought:
1: snappier and tighter
2: more compressed, smoother, most lows
3: thinner, more open
I found the single track right at the start most helpfull for comparison: the double tracking of heavily distorted guitars sounds good and is fun, but tends to level out differences IMO.

heh, yeah, pretty marginal- though the PK sounded the most different, I thought.
HD a little more organic and low mids
MM a little less organic, more bass, little more chug.
PK a bit more metal again than the MM, little less chug.
I think.

The differences were very marginal to my ears, but I definately prefered the Holy Diver one the best.
Miracle Man seems to have a lot of Low end to it
PainKiller sounds like it makes the sound breakup a bit and it quite dark
Holy Diver is the tightest with a more cleaner tone to it, more mids

To my ears the PK was uber-aggresive. The MM was drier and slightly less intense. The HD sound the least aggresive thinner than the other two. But given the company it was in that is hardly an insult.

i think MM sounded thicker on bottom because it's in a mahogany gibson flying v (very bassy guitar)
everytime Antag records a clip he makes me more confused :s

Ah...shoulda realised about the mahogany in the V; I'm assuming at least one of the others is basswood? Yes, I'm sure that skews things a bit.

Thanks for the comments guys, after coming back today & listening with fresh ears there are differences so perhaps it wasn't a totally wasted effort :)
For sure it wasn't a strictly scientific test as the 3 guitars are so different, but then these clips & my "first impressions" posts are about how they sound in my guitars. A few words about the 3 guitars I used here:
Charvel (PK) - maple neck-thru/rosewood fretboard, poplar body wings (if they're alder then it's a very dense piece of it), schaller floyd. This guitar weighs a ton & acoustically is the bassiest of the 3 with the most sustain & a thick dense tone, despite the woods & having a floyd.
Flying V (MM) - mahogany set neck/rosewood fretboard, mahogany body, tunomatic w/tailpiece. Quite light by Gibson standards with a vibrant, snappy sound. Acoustically it's the loudest electric I own (if that makes sense!)
Jackson (HD) - maple neck-thru/ebony fretboard, alder body wings, tunomatic w/string-thru ferrules. By far the lightest weight of the 3 guitars & the brightest acoustic sound too. See this (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6308) earlier thread about what the HD did for this guitar :)
So, perhaps some of these guitars have qualities that are offset by the pickup I've installed - i.e. it's not necessarily bassiest pickup in bassiest guitar & vice versa. Adding a Holy Diver clip was an afterthought, it's the odd one out with an Alnico V magnet, but I wanted to show that it is very much a metal pickup that can do this kind of stuff.
FWIW, the Holy Diver is still my favourite BKP - it's a bit more "open" than MM or PK, I love its lead tone & IMO it's miles ahead of MM or PK for clean sounds. But if you mostly play the kind of riffing I've played here, then you won't go wrong with either MM or PK...

Subtle differences, I think. The Holy Diver sounded different than I would have thought but I liked it alot. It's more meaty than I thought.
Holy Diver: Punch in the gut.
Miracle Man: Kick in the nuts.
Painkiller: head butt.

i love my Nailbomb, the only problem is that it doesnīt get that tight for Blastpicking(Tremolo picking,or speedpicking.i like to call it Blastpicking)
but it fits my bill for the whole rest of it.

subtle difference as everyone noted, but important ones considering the price of the pickups.

No chance of clips for a while - I'm reorganising my music room (& upgrading some gear) so my setup is in bits at the moment :)
However to answer your question, I reckon that PK might be "tighter" than NB for really fast un-muted alternate picked riffs (which I presume is what you meant?) Bear in mind though that under extreme high gain you will lose a certain amount of definition without palm muting, regardless of the pickup you use.
Also, I only have a Cold Sweat neck (you asked on another post somewhere), so can't comment on the bridge...

the Cold sweat neck is really the pickup(and the right position) i would like to hear,with someleads on the neck spot,with the same ammount of distortion you use on your clips .
when you can, please,do me a favor and do a clip of the Cold Sweat Neck for me please.

MM is a crazy chick ,with enough rack to make you cry :idea:
HD is just a supermodel can be hot ,but it needs a Expensive toy to get bigger and better :twisted:

Grt thread. I listend without looking at results and liked HD better good low end and definition. MM I noticed had more low end not tons though and was good. Painkiller was least favorite sounded to have some odd frequency.

They're fairly close, but I find the Holy Diver has the best clarity above low mids, the Miracle Man is very fizzy and something sounds lost in the mids (not that you were anywhere close to being EQ'd for it, I can tell) with a whopping low end, and the Painkiller has kick ass lows. I think it's the best of the three.
