Title: Marshall or Fender
Post by: Dennis on February 13, 2007, 09:34:13 PM
Well, since I was bored, and somewhat liked the "strat or les paul" thread, I thought, why not an amp thread

So....what does it for you?
A Fender amp or a Marshall amp (well, I had to choose two opposites, mostly associated with the strat and the LP   )

I have played over some great fender amps, and I would really love to have a Twin, that clean is soooo nice!
But lots of Fenders do not have the distorted tones I like.

I hear lots of bands using marshalls, which in some cases even sounds pretty good!
But every time I play a marshall, it just sounds like cr@p (and not only because of my playing), for some reason it just doesn't fit me quite well...

So for me no Fender and also no Marshall  :D

Marshall is a Fender PDT_008

Or, at least, a Fender with a bad cough.

If I have to choose between those two, I'd probably go for Marshall, on the basis that I haven't played a single Fender amp which has suited my style, whereas I've been able to get more or less what I want from most Marshalls I've played through.

That's not to say Fender don't have some nice amps, I just haven't been lucky enough to find one I like.

However, I actually play (like quite a few around here) a Laney - just does everything I need. If money were no object, I could be tempted by any number of things - Cornell, Cornford, Mesa Boogie, Peavey JSX, Bad Cat, Bogner, Engl - the list goes on and on....  :)

I'd be happy with either an early 4x10 Bassman combo or JTM 45 tbh. They had basically the same circuitry, not a huge amount of either company's other amps interest me that much tho.

Well...I'm not too technical in the electric stuff, and I don't know much about the history of the amps of both, but.....some JCM stuff does not sound like some Twin stuff to me  :)

Haha, same here!
And same for lots of people I guess...

I like Fender like clean and Marshall like grit...
Laney is the answer!  :D

I dont like the scoopy sludgy sound of 6L6 high gain amps too much.

What TO is getting at is that the first Marshall amp was based on Fender Bassman circuitry.  So a Marshall IS a Fender, to a certain degree.  They kind of went their separate ways though  :)

I've never played through a Fender amp.  They've never appealed to me although a guitarist I heard recently had a great tone through a Hot Rod Deluxe combo and an overdrive pedal.

I just love the look of a half stack so it'd be a Marshall (well, Laney...) for me  :D

hehe.

I'm gonna have to say both again... though if I had to pick it'd probably be marshall.

I traded my Marshall VS100 for a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

It's easier to make a fender sound like a Marshall than vice versa. Plenty of good dirt boxes around for that.

+ Fenders are the most reliable amps around, IMHO. (The new Supersonic seems to be an exception.) Mine is built like a tank and can take quite some traveling abuse.

I had a mid 70's Silver face Twin Reverb and a Marshall Jubilee combo - the Strat, through the twin sounded absolutely amazing, but for sheer overdrive the natural drive of the Marshall is one of those sounds you'll take to the grave with you.

I sold the Twin, kept the Marshall. Sometimes I wish my Marshall had the depth of the twin, I guess the different valves play a part in that, but in the mix of a live band situation, it's not a problem at all. I no some recent Marshalls get a slating, but I cant really comment on them - I'm basing my judgement on JCM800's and Silver Jubilees. The jubilees are fantastic amps in my opinion.

Anyway... as a BKP user who used both amps with the same guitar, I came back to Marshall in the end...

I wouldn't buy either - But if someone forced me I'd have to survive with the Marshall.

I've got to go with Marshall on this one. Used to have a 50 watt head (old 1987X I'm guessing). Loads of fun  8)

Thats weird, my HRDx has had input jack problems for ages. Just tried cleaning them with some contact cleaner and nothing, they need replacing  :x

I prefer the british tone. My Laney is much better than my Fender for me, even for cleans I prefer the tone.

Curious about this post. What is your amp of choice? I notice you don't like the Vox you currently own, either. Fender ... Marshall .. Vox ... those are all classic tones. What is your ideal amp tone, if money were no object?

I'm like noodles, i have a Laney GH50L and it does the job well but my ideal amp would be a Mesa Boogie for that classic Metallica thrash sound.
Though if i had to choose i'd pick Marshall.

Only if you consider "classic" Metallica to be Justice and after. Prior to that, they were playing Marshalls!! (which is what I would consider 'classic' Metallica) PDT_008

They used them on master of puppets too i think, i consider that classic metallica and things before that old school metallica, but you just cant get their sound with a marshall after the ride the lightning period, you can get close though with the laney and custom warpig.

Mesa, Engle, even a fat Diezel if I had the money.

Something with huge gain and great tone, more modern amps you could say. Fender amps in my expierience lean to 60s tones, and Marshalls to 70s and 80s metal tones - I'm often wrong in these situations, but personally, I've yet to play a Marshall or a Fender which don't give the typical Marshall and Fender tones.

Re: expecting a diffent basic tone from either Fender or Marshall: Neither Fender nor Marshall are about to throw away their respective babies with the bath water at this point. However, I can see your point re: wanting a tone that's different. After playing a JCM800 for many years, I went for a Splawn, which is similar to the 800 but with higher resolution and better sound. The gain structure is the same, though.

ENGL's basic tone is that of a modded Marshall in many respects, but the Diezel definitely has a sound all its own. I use a VH-4 @ rehearsal most weeks -- very versatile amp!

It was a Mesa preamp with a Marshall power amp on Puppets, actually. I don't know what they used on the tour, however. The stage setup they used when they opened for Ozzy had no amps visible.

Ah, well it doesn't sound very Marshally to my ears so i tend to think the end of the Metallica-Marshall era is Ride the Lightning. Still great tones though!

wow...that Diezel stuff is pretty cool, I have been playing some times on a Diezel Herbert, really cool distortion tones on that stuff, and also very nice cleans! It is very nice for country style playing, but I haven't seen a country guitars playing a diezel though :-)
I wish I had one...

BTW a little off topic...are there some people here that know a little about tubes? I would like to "change" certain sounds on my amp (lets's say I want channel 3 a little more "oomph")....can I realise that by just changing preamp tubes, or is this certainly it has something to do with transformers and stuff?
