Im learning Eruption now.. about 1/4 so far but really sloppy. Just wondering how many of you guys here can play it. Great tune!
-
I can fake my way through it! haha.
-
I can play it, but still don't like it. PDT_008

no way. i can't even shred. i suck. i play guitar because it's $%ing fun, i love riffage, i love writing riffs and playing with my bro (drummer), and finally, the awesome CRUSHING TONE!

I toyed with doing a sequel 'Erection - a sudden rush of blood to the head' but it was too long.
-
I wish!
I looked at the tab once ... something like 64 notes per bar?
If I could play that well tho I sure as hell wouldn't be doing what i do for a living at the mo :)
-
i can do the tapping part, but its sloppy as hell. Then again ive only been playing just under 2 years. I will eventually be able to, one day it shall be mines!
-
I got pretty good at the midlle bit and the ascending bit of the tapping now. The beginning is hard imo. Doesnt help I'm playing it on a baseball bat LP neck either
-
Not tried but with the practice reckon I could get it.
-
It was great back in the days but I have no ambition to play it, I've never heard anyone come close apart from dweezil zappa, covering tunes like thus is so hard
-
Even Chris Oliva (savatage) didn't do it verbatim

VH tribute band Atomic Punks do it ok - Russ Parish on guitar

Learning the tapping part was almost a rite of passage for those of us that were teens in the 80s :)
At what point does "I can fake my way through it" become "Pfft! As if!"? If I'm honest with myself I'm probably closer to the latter these days... :(
-
I can't do any tapping at all and EVH is not my cup of tea. I'd love to be able to play it though. Tapping would add so many other possibilies to my playing if I had the patience to learn how. Check out this fella for instance, a jazz-tapping take on a Beatles song!:

Except those of us who were incredibly lazy (and still are :( ).
I can manage a couple of bars of tapping, that's about it...
-
I can kindof play it but I've never heard anyone else do it like the record, even EVH live - there's just so much going on gear wise on that track that you can't really replicate that sound.

Interesting Eruption trivia:
The original transcprition for Eruption that appeared in Guitar Player magazine was transcribed by ... Steve Vai!

As well as Spanish Fly. I've still got them around here somewhere.

------------
Apparently, the recording of "Eruption" happened spontaneously... it wasn't even supposed to be a track on the album. Eddie Valen Halen was warming up at the recording studio early one day, when producer Ted Templeman overheard the guitarist. Templeman loved what he heard, and demanded that they record the solo. Eddie quickly recorded one take of "Eruption", and they ended up putting it on the album. Says Eddie: "I didn't even play it right. There's a mistake at the top end of it. To this day, whenever I hear it I always think, "Man, I could've played it better."
------------
Apparently even Eddie cant play it right
-
does anyone have accurate tab source for it?

I can't play it so dunno if its right, but it claims to be transcribed from Guitar Player magazine so should be sound :)

I don't really dig EVH's technique, and personally, I think that there's too much show and not enough substance in a lot of his solos. (Please don't hate me!)
(Although I am currently working on Yngwie's Black Star, so who am I to talk :D )
Having said that, he has the greatest tone anyone has ever gotten from a guitar, and he is/was a true pioneer in guitar technique.
