Post by: Toms' anominous on February 21, 2007, 01:54:12 PM: so i bought a cheapo telecaster and i want to replace the neck pickups with a brown sugar one and then put a humbucker in it. i was thinking miracle man humbucker put would it drown out the sugar?

I'm putting together a telecaster style guitar right now, and I'm using a VHII in the bridge with a Trilogy Suite in the neck.

Post by: Toms' anominous on February 21, 2007, 02:51:55 PM: It's maple with a maple fret board though i might change the neck and go for a mahogany nech with a rose wood finger board. the fact that its maple will probably make it too bright so i was also thinking of a Swinehead condor, cos i like its thick tone.

I guess the tone i'm looking for would be a thick creamy sound with an awsome uperend cut when the distortion is kicked on. and its got to carry pinchharmonics well, and i know humbuckers are best for this.

That may be true, but how many BKs do you own to compare them against?
Looking at your profile and tracking down your posts, it looks like you don't own any BKs.

Very true.

At present i have yet to play any non-bkp loaded guitar that sounds nicer than and bkp loaded guitar, but then everybodys ears are different, it's fun down at my local guitar shop though, they don't let you buy Semour Suncans unless you've at;east tried BKP's :-)

I would argue that you don't if you try to buy SD's or DM's this side of the pond, lol.

and you're putting together a tele? that sounds like heresy!

EDIT: ^ ^ heh, I doubt my local stores have even heard of BKP's...

Sorry, I'm confused. You're getting a Swineshead and still want a BK recommendation, or are you on the fence?

Either way, as I said, the MM might be a bit bright; depends on your playing style and how much attack you like. I think a MM or a Holy Diver will work just fine. The Holy Diver is darker sounding, not as bright on the high freqs.

I remember this argument happened one other time, eventually steve mr pig turned up and said (correctly, IMO) that neither company is really in competition with each other. Swineys are great pickups on the cheap (my opinion, and nicer than SD or DM (my opinion again)), while BKP are pretty much the ultimate if you have the cash. It's not really comparing like with like, and it's not fair to do so.

Swinseheads sound great.

I think the closest equivalent BKP would be the Cold Sweat, even though it has a different magnet.

Theres loads in the Players forum :?

Whenever the new site is launched there will be "proper" clips done by Tim for every pickup I think.

Everyone has completely different hardware, so the clips in the players forum are not really good for comparing pickups to each other. The best kind of clips are what SD does. All the humbuckers are recorded with the same amp, same guitar, same program, and with the same settings. You can actually compare pickups.

Some of the clips posted obviously are made with cheap equipment and I don't understand how anyone could get and idea of what BKP's sound like with them. They sound like samples from SD or EMG.

We need more clips like what Steve Stevens made. Those clips kick ass. You can hear everything. Nothing muffled.

I think everyone -- including the BKP guys -- are likely to agree with this. But BKP is just a little company with just a few dudes working there, and there just hasn't been the resource to turn out loads of awesome pickups and update the web site (something which has been promised for a long time!).

We'll just have to keep holding our collective breath a little longer ....

Dimarzio and Bareknuckle have clips of their pickups being used in the context in which they are most likely to be used, which helps more than the SD clips, I find.

5.SD
4.DM
3.EMG
2.SWH
1.BKP

although DM and EMG are pretty much the same.
