Title: What if Tim made actives??
Post by: LazyNinja on February 22, 2007, 09:38:16 AM
Just a random thought. What if Tim made an active versions of miracle man or warpigs? Is it actually possible? Would it be quite pointless as those pickups are plenty powerful already and would be an overkill, or would it open up a whole new kind of brutal tone?

from what i've heard bareknuckles seem to be pretty much perfect, at the minute i have emg's and they just dont seem to be alive.... the way i feel is emg's are like robots they do there job and do it efficiently and well, but normal pickups just seem to have life like a person they can give you whatever you ask of them and a whole lot more,  but you've got to try like you should have to

i havent worded this very well but im sure you know what i mean.... 8)

Yeah I agree, I hated EMGs when I had them on my Les Paul, they are so sterile. I nearly sold the guitar all together coz I got so pissed off that I spent Ģ130 on an EMG set and made it sound worse. But what I was trying to get at was that I havent ever seen a hand made scatterwound active pickup, so you would keep the rich harmonics and the character of BKPs but with the sensitivity and gain of EMGs. Im not even sure such thing would work. But I hope you see my point.

I think there is enough gain to be had from the BK range anyway. Using active circuits does change the way a pickup responds and sounds.

Active pickups use less turns and so the scatter winding wouldn't really make that much of a difference.  You can add an active circuit, but it is really like using a pedal then.  I have some passive circuits in a couple of mine, they are made by Alan Exely and are his 'Live Wire' products (scroll down after the pedals - which are great value btw.)

I have the Strat tone and a couple of the tuned filters.  They don't need batteries and they work very nicely (anyone who played my PRS EG4 with Crawler/P-90's at LGS 2005 has heard them!).

They don't take away anything from the tone of the BK's.  Having said that, I am just going to upgrade my LP with Black Dogs to the RS Pots and Hovland caps, which seems to be a more minimalist way to effect a tone change.

The point of active pickups is clarity and breadth of frequency respone under high gain. BKs achieve this by different methods already. I cant see any advantage to it, and it would mean BK setting up a whole different operation where their strengths wouldnt shine.

I think Tims already said it with somehting along the lines of "EMG do great active pickups, but thats not what were about".

I think EMGs are great if you play with LOTS of distortion.  my mate thinks his (2204) JCM800 sounds cr@p straight in with the EMGs yet agrees that my LP with Crawlers sounds excellent straight into the amp.

The EMGs just sound flat usless there is MONDO GAIN!!!

Do you know if the passive overdrive circuit will work with trilogy suites? The review comments that it will work with humbuckers, P90s and overwound single pickups (not standard wound single pickups.) Is this to do with the output, or the number of turns of wire?

Thanks folks.
